I never said you looked older in real life, I said you looked like a 25 year old supermodel in that pic.
And I'll NEVER forgive you for beating me up and pushing me in the creek at Fosters.
Nita, don't worry, the path to goddess status is not via flattery. Yes those are both me. I gained a lot of weight during Chemo, go figure. The goofing aroudn pic is several years ago, the fat one is from this past summer, 18 pounds heavier.

My cat look implies that there was a Halloween party to attend in Yosemite, and alls I had in my truck that I could MacGuyver up for the occasion was a sweat suit, a bag of make up, and a big sock.
Like a proper lazy cat, I lay low and keep still so that I don't need to call up any of my nine lives or worry about which way that I land.
I had to pick from the few photos I already had on photobucket, since I'm too lazy to ever upload them off of my camera.

Ha, we were using a densely packed 10'x10'x20' line of leaves as a pad back in the day for a highball roof problem called 'Leaves of the Failing Faith'. We each took about 20+ rides into them. Adam ended up taking off a key block after the FA and we weren't sure which was going to emerge from the pile, him or the block...

The Cancer Society here has a program called "Balding for Dollars". The idea is that you get friends and colleagues and relatives to pledge money, then you get scalped. So for a while you look a bit like the popular stereotype of someone with cancer. And the Cancer Society raises a bunch of money.
They're quite good at getting people to volunteer, particularly attractive young women.
Another is "Jail and Bail", where they get the police to come and drag you away from work (with the connivance of your employer), and you're held until your friends ransom you. If they do. They usually do this to prominent figures, and it's broadcast on the CBC, for the amusement of all.

Off and bvb, Adam is a well-studied technophobe and won't be posting up anytime soon. Here's a shot of him when he was 14 down in SoIll in an area long since closed to climbing.
(Scanned from the very first generation of color laser prints...)

[ Note: And contrary to the revisionist history proffered by some commercial slackline interests, Adam, down in Southern Illinois in the mid-70's, was very much responsible for the birth of what is now called slacklining back when he was only 16... ]

Chaz, I always thought you were the jackass. Heh heh. Or is that heh haw heh haw
Politically of course. ;-)
I hardly have any pictures of me climbing but I'll scan the couple I do have and put them up (someone please remind me, what's the best way to post a pic).
I have one of myself and another of Claude Fiddler bouldering in the Arboretum at Columbia College (Tuolumne County) in 1975. Some of me bouldering on Mt Diablo, and one or two of me on the Mexican volcanoes, along with a group shot taken on Orizaba, or is it Popo? (Ed, take note, Rob Grandfield will be in the pic, say hello to him for me and tell him I will look him up in July/August after I move back home).
In the meantime, this will have to do I guess.

But then back on rec.climbing, I learned that some people read my nom de net as "Chloe."

There's a sweet story about the Sergeant Pepper's album cover. The legal department told the Beatles that they had to get permission from all those who were living, to print their picture. (Most were famous, or infamous.)
So they wrote a nice letter to all the people in the collage, asking if it was ok. One of the people was Mae West - I think she's the blonde on the right. She wrote back, saying "What would I be doing in a lonely heart's club?"
But in the end she agreed.

Clyde Minaret

hey, this is fun, looking at old trips. some silly ones:
Really watered down root "beer" on Dinner Ledge (with my brother)

not-sure-what's-going-on-rappel GPA, Yosemite Valley

prepping for something very serious on the East Coast (note coonskin cap, unnecessary mirror goggles, hemp rope, wood ice axe)

California waterfall ice (snowshoes, t-shirt helmet, no jacket)

alpine start with my brother (nice outfits), Avalanche Peak (Arthur's Pass, NZ)

oops that's enough.
keep em coming!

Todd,
Nice to see you and the fam. You win, there's no way 500 desert towers could compete with the past, present and future happiness encompassed in that family shot.
On another note, seeing all of you made me REALLY want to come to the Sushifest. I was ready to drop the cash and fly to wherever, whenever. Unfortunately, after looking back through 1000 posts, I realized that it's on 4/20. I have a trip planned that weekend with people from 3 different states and it's not movable. (at least it's a climbing trip) Anyway, I just wanted to say that I will be there in spirit.
Take lots of pictures...

Wow, I'm thinking this is the best thread I've ever been part of. What shines through all the remarkable diversity is the passion climbers seem to take with them along the way. Hair thins, faces wrinkle, minds fog over but the heart still longs for the Big Experience, the Big Love, the feeling of being alive and sharing it too.

I think so. He did help keep order about the whole thing. Problem was that when we were not looking, he ate the ice cream wedding cake during the reception (Wallpack Inn). We got married at the Watergate lake shore inside the Delaware Water Gap. Just as we completed our vows, all of the Canada geese started honking en masse and at once. To this day, I am suspicious that someone suddenly started feeding them because it was just all too coincidental. You just can't get married without inviting Bear 46 to the affair.

sometimes in the meadows, my grandma still asks, sometimes, "remember nita and andy i wonder whatever happened to them?"

she loves you too! i will call her a little later today and pass on your message - should i pass on your email address too? my grandma is totally savvy and hip! she totally uses the internet.
and as for those pics - well i think you look pretty! but how about if i email them to you FIRST and then if you like, YOU can post? i will be there for easter in a couple of weeks - she loves for us to come to her church (episcopal! none of that conservative evangelical stuff for our fam!) and i will borrow them and find a scanner.
nita seriously - my cousins and i LOVED you and always thought you were the coolest!

nita! it's okay hottie i'm a digitard too - i have some pics from climbing the other day, my buddy put them on a mini cd and gave them to me last night - but i can't figure out how to open it on my computer!!! i am seeing him later today - he's off throwing hay (told you guys i'm country!!!) and hopefully i can get them online...
so i'll be at g.ma's in a couple of weeks - expect them around easter, 'kay?
do you ever go to the meadows? i forget what dates we're goin' next summer but if you're there at the same time you guys should come hang with us!!!
i'll give my g-ma your email addy - is that okay? i'm sure she'd LOVE to hear from you. we love you too! seriously i wanted to be just like you! i havn't worked in the meadows, it has never worked with my schedule - i almost got a job there when i worked in yos but i had to leave before they closed so they gave me a job cashiering in the valley... i still kinda wanna do time in the meadows but i am think i'm doing other stuff this summer... and i don't really fit in with the climber/stoner crowd at all, i'm too dorky for them!

Mighty fine . . .

I think if we all got together, as some of us will at the Sushifest, for the most part, excepting those of us who've been acquainted for 30 years, for the most part we'd lots of us never really have the time to put it all together per our Supertopo names, real names, and personalities.
You know, what with the medium somewhat dictating the flavor of the interaction, the whole cyberspace thing creates an ambience unlikely to be reflected quite the same way on the "outside". This forum is a fantastically mercurial environment with lots of folks chiming in on the same thought stream sometimes simultaneously and often in kaleidoscopic fashion.
Were we all to get together at once, we'd therefore meet on fresh terms and it would flow just fine in that sense because this is such a diverse yet cohesively bonded group here, with a common set of experiences and natural values, but it would be different.
Like me fer instance, in real time I'm actually rather sedate, staid, even...

Here I am on a fine day of mountaineering in my usual attire. With all the recent talk about some whipper snapper cruising up the Eiger in record time, I thought I could share my "Eigerwand" experiences. Frankly, I don't know what the fuss is all about. I made it to the 'top' in about one hour.

Jaaaaaysus, some great pix. Damn I wish I had taken a camera along more times than I did.
I agree, this is the best thread. I didn't climb with many of you people, though I hung with several of you and shared beers and joints at Camp 4, but it is great to see all of you people looking healthy.
Could someone please get Vern to get Fiddler involved in this, and what about Jim Keating? About a year ago Roy McClenahan sent me contact details for Claude and we e-mailed each other once, and now I have to get off my proverbial asssss and get ahold of him and Jimbo. What about Tom Carter?
Perhaps I can meet up with some of you people thi summer in the Meadows (if I make it there - I should).
Sort of sad I am going to miss the Sushifest.

Cybele- you should post the one of you from the patagucci catalog a few seasons back!
Stzzo- I did the via ferrata @ Nelson before I started climbing... and thought it was kinda fun. It can be a fun thing for non-climbers. It allows you ro see climbers from a vantage point that's not a butt shot & not a Yosemite/touron/binocular view- which of course instantly made me think "why am I doing the VFwhen I could be doing what that dude over there is doing" (having never climbed also never exposed me to the joys of flailing either)
Unfortunately there was a fatality on it last year...one of the contributing factors to it being on the market.
I hear there's a VF in KY w/a roof. Sounds like it could be worth trying. Apparently VF's are all over Europe, leftover from ww1?2? when they had to move soldiers over mtns en mass.

Common huntsman spider.
http://www.amonline.net.au/factSheets/huntsman_spiders.htm
Supposedly quite docile unless provoked. The word is the bites hurt like hell, but aren't really dangerous. Among the various things in Oz that can bite you, a huntsman is apparently a better choice than many others.

Yes, Phil B, filtering software (or something) also keeps me from seeing most pics on one of my computers. Can't figure out how to turn it off.
Imagine my surprise when I go back to a thread later, and all these pictures appear!
[edit to James Colburn, who said "Some of my fondest memories of Chico are the pot lucks with all the fantastic food and Andy rockin on the acoustic with Mark Wilpolt and Dan Mcglaulphlin. sp?"] -
James, Dan McLaughlin was a buddy of mine from LA, and the only time I spent in Chico was with him after we drove him up there in his old Mustang. Maybe we met at a party or two, 1983/84? What ever happened to Dan? We used to say that the wind would blow a gentle breeze, then when you turned around, Dan would be sitting there with his guitar, looking VERY relaxed, with that sly smile of his.

WillBill, Dan M. lives in Marin, he's a teacher- I think for the blind. If you want his phone number and address, it will
take me all of five minutes to round it up. He still comes to
Chico quite often -to visit and play music.
ps. Dan, picked up the fiddle a while back, now he's a pretty good player. I love his singing voice.

A friend was telling me about a mutual acquaintance, also a climber, who had been through a couple of big surgeries in the last couple of years. It sounded rough. "How's he doing now?" I asked.
"Oh, he's still living the life," my friend answered.
That's what I see in nearly all of these photos -- people living the life.
