1977 . . . hard to really define, every year was a good year. The band had to endure many changes, they held true to the music and the long strange trip. It is not easy to be on the road for extended periods, combine that with getting out there, forging ahead, playing in the band night after night . . . what an energy level! Bobby, Jerry, Phil, Billy, Mickey, Pig Pen, Tom Constanten, Donna, Keith, Brent . . . thank you all for giving it your all.

When I was in high school in the late 80s and getting into all the hippy music of my parents' generation, I thought the people I saw into Grateful Dead were too much like fawning sheep and the little sampling I heard was pretty boring! I couldn't understand the fuss. But with more exposure and awareness of the variety over the years, and more exposure to bluegrass as a foundation for appreciating their jams, I like them more now than at times past.
My favorite era is probably the early Mutron III years 1977-1978.
Just got inspired to listen to July 8, '78 Red Rocks version of Estimated Prophet right now. Makes me want to pick up my guitar and mess around with envelope-controlled Q and frequency for a high pass filter.
Found the same one on Youtube! That's probably where I got it from:

Great show, btw!

Jaybro,
Sorry for the thread drift, is Scarpelli still in Laramie? It has been many moons, but always enjoyed running into him.

24 trips around the sun in July.. heard my buddies’ tape of a St Louis 1977 show.. was a bit awestruck, never really heard music be played with such honesty before. Instant convert.

Instant convert.
If memory serves, I first heard them in 1963. Not instant, but they grew on me.
