This is way more stressful than any climbing I've done...

I looked up that year on Kelly blue book.
You looked up the cheapest - CE - this is an XLE.

I'd assume he's not going to negotiate on price no matter what a mechanic finds, if he's even willing to deal with an unknowledgeable buyer who wants to fuk around during the sale - when the next guy in line knows exactly what he's looking at with cash in hand. Something to keep in mind. Could be a piece of junk too.

You need to get it looked at, but don't be surprised at an unwillingness to negotiate. My style of selling would be the same - price low and firm, hide nothing, take no sh!t from idiots.

one way to look at it is, its 1000 bucks. go down. drive it. If it seems safe, get a mechanic to look at it and then buy it.

If it dies, well, you lost 1000 bucks. Get a job in Yosemite. They come with housing. Get a night job and climb every day. Or climb on your weekends.

by the way.. how old are you? Have you ever bought an automobile?

What is your long term plan? Knowing that can help shape our advice.

FWIW I've been driving an 03 Sienna for 10 plus years, very reliable, mine has 180k. Main expense was timing belt, water pump change. 1k sounds like a deal IF that work is up to date as it needs to be done at 90k mile intervals. Rear seats do not fold down you have to take them out, lots of room once you do. Boring looking but under the radar...

Friend of mine got a free 01 Sienna. He did a motor/tranny swap and took it on a 5 week road trip to new York and back with no problems. Engine tranny swap is about 1200 parts and labor. We have a lot of used engine suppliers here in San Diego for some reason.

^^^^^ Go find Werner. If he offers help. take it. He works for the park service. He used to do search and rescue. Now he works on park vehicles installing communication gear.

It's just a few months? I wouldn't pay anything for a timing belt or engine work for that thing. The 1k price might bake that in if he knows it's due. I wouldn't even register it unless the tabs were about to expire. I wouldn't even leave the Valley with it, I'd dump it on the message board, take the first offer, find a bus to the airport. Not sure about CA, but most titles have a signature row meant for passing from dealer to dealer, but anyone can use them the same way. Sign that, pass it to the next guy without ever registering it. If it breaks down, leave it unlocked with the title in the glove box - walk away. Your insurance company will insure a new vehicle by default for some number of days. Don't get in an accident, but if you're from another country, nobody can sue you. You could get thrown in jail, though.

Yeah, with a timing belt rather than a chain you need to make sure that's been done. I own a 2001 Sienna my daughter drives and it's been quite good @ 160k miles. Another expensive job that I didn't do myself was changing spark plugs. They last more than 100k miles, but you have to pull a shitload of stuff off the top of the engine to get to the rear three, a real pain in the ass.

It’s very important that it be woman driven. My wife agrees.

I’ve got a Saturn sedan for sale. $1000. Runs great. Inspected and good to go. Pick it up in NH, visit the red on your way to the valley.

Indeed that’s what I didn’t do either. The v6 3 liter gets ~25 mpg, the car will fall apart before the engine. Overall, recommend.

Great offer. Werner knows how to fix cars. So he probably knows of ones that seem in decent shape.

Hope it works out. Calling Werner a used car salesman doesn't seem quite right. Don't stop

Still, from the number of people who vouch for him, you can guess that he'd point you on a decent path if you haven't started one already.

messages on this forum don't work. you will either have to go find him, or post a way for him to contact you. I believe he works in the maintenance yard. Go ask there. They will likely know where he is. Tell them Werner offered to help you so they know why you want him. I believe he works on the communication equipment in park vehicles, so the rangers may know where to find him.

In case you don't know, Werner did Search and Rescue in the park for years and is well known. He retired from that and now installs communication equipment in park vehicles. He is also a well known and respected climber.
