For SKI BOOT fitting (as well as excellent selection): California Ski Co., on Gilman St in Berkeley.

For alpine (climbing) gear... The Backcountry (Truckee) or Alpenglow Sports (also Tahoe) are serviceable.

I moved away from the Bishop/Tahoe/Bay Area in 2010, so I'm wondering: If I want to buy specialty alpine climbing gear at a brick business in San Francisco or nearby, where do you recommend?

what are you specifically looking for from a shop? If your answer is:
1) the ability to talk to "experts"
2) the ability to physically touch products
3) the ability to get the stuff quickly

Then the internet is better than a physical store in those regards. Lots of reliable knowledge on the internet; quick shipping and free returns makes the gear come and go easily.

If you answer is
1) the ability to try on boots, or the ability to have bootwork performed

I would recommend going to the skimo store in salt lake city (if you're looking at rando gear) , or the big gear shops in chamonix (if you're looking for alpine boots).

best,
matt
