"Four mountain climbers had to be rescued from England's highest peak after they became 'incapable of walking due to cannabis,' police say"

http://www.sfgate.com/weird/article/4-climbers-unable-to-walk-due-to-cannabis-12227013.php

In the day before cell phones, we'd just wait for the buzz to wear off. No rescue necessary.

Another example of the press inappropriately using the term "climber." A 3210 ft. high rounded hill only requires that you can walk down a sidewalk and chew gum at the same time.

Don't be so sure this is a piece of cake, donini. And there is elevation to be gained, so it's technically "a climb."

The summit of the Pike is a giant boulder field, shattered rock of the Borrowdale Volcanics varying in size from small stones to large boulders is scattered over the top of the mountain and down around the sides.

Cairns mark meandering paths searching for the easiest way through the agglomeration and go off in all directions making it a confusing place especially in poor conditions. Witness the call outs of the Wasdale MRT to those who are 'lost', and fall victim to 'navigation errors' ending up in the wrong valley.

So that is how one comes to be termed a 'piker'?

It was bloody freezing on Cloggy in June. Epic I tell you!
Had to put me rubbers on!

You just might be right mouse. In Cali a lot of people would even refer to it as an alpine climb.

No, Reilly; there are many stories about the origin of the word. See Clarence King's tale of The Newtys of Pike in his "Mountaineering in California."

Such hyperbole, Jim. Thanks.

I've "climbed" Scafell Pike (though the "voie normale" is of course just a "fell-walk", aka a "hike"). And of course you're more likely than not to get rained on in the Lake District, depending on the time of year, not to mention hiking in dense fog, wading through sheep sh#t, and so on. I suppose if you're stoned enough, you might not be able to follow the obvious path down in the fog, but these folks would perhaps have had a better time visiting Beatrix Potter's cottage this particular day.... That said, the friend I was with, who lives in Kendal and hikes regularly around there, said that he almost always has a map and compass with him when the weather is not absolutely clear.

They must have been eating IT.....

I can handle myself, always.

At a dead concert, I one time ate about 6 brownies...didn't feel anything.

But one time I was given some "candy" marked 4500mg when we were craging at Malibu....

I lead a climb or two, started to feel it, decided to switch to TR... on the second TR run....

I forgot how to climb!!!!

F-up totally.

But after a few hours all was back to normal.

I was able to hike out on my own -- self rescue

Those "climbers" are light

Edibles will do that to you. No measure of dose. Especially if smoking too.

Unable to navigate may have been more of the problem. Can't focus long enough to remember where you are or where you are going.

Had a backpacking experience like this one. Lines on the map just squiggled. We could remember to stay on the trail and move up hill so it all came out okay.

Um, that would be Colorado, where you drive the 14ers. As we all know, California 3rd equals Colorado 4th.

Fake news, disinformation. No driving up any 14ers around here . . . unless you are reaaalllyyy stoned.

Colorado grades are more difficult than California's in general.

This story has been embelished by the media to make it more sensational. According to one of the hikers that was interviewed:
Samuel Coleridge, who identified himself as one of the hikers, called the reports “fake news” and said the group had only called for help after a hiker collapsed shortly before nightfall after smoking some marijuana on the trail. The man recovered and the group had already hiked nearly all the way back by the time they encountered the rescue team, he wrote.

That sounds like alternate facts.

Mount Evans is a good option, however, it requires a short hike to the summit.

A short hike? OMG!!!111

You can also get to the top of Mt. Antero by 4x4.
