Interesting that Chouinard's first wife was described above as "tiny". I once heard him declare (his exact words):

........."BEWARE OF SMALL-BONED WOMEN"

It seemed odd at the time, which is likely why I remembered it. Now it makes sense.

I don't have a lot of climbing cred but I can legitimately claim to having taken Malinda out for lunch.

Hey, it's not like Yvon is a giant of a man. He keeps his women in his ballpark. No Amazons allowed.

I just finished reading the book. I was a little disappointed. I've always admired Yvon and wondered about his past. This book fills in a lot of his early history and covers some of his early climbs. Mostly Yosemite and not much detail of that, but that info can be found elsewhere. It does have a lot of good old gossipy type stories.
Mostly I was disappointed by the authors lack of climbing detail. Saying things like Yvon was climbing 8000 meter peaks and calling Tom Frost's effort on the South face of Annapurna the north face instead ...Just details for sure, but it always makes me wonder about other details truthfulness. There were loads of good stories about many people I know though so overall I found it interesting if not complete. Could have used more and better photos as well. I'd recommend borrowing it instead of buying it, unless you were there at the time and personally involved.

........."BEWARE OF SMALL-BONED WOMEN"

Yvon's first wife would sit at her vanity desk and mirror in the woods at the Climbers' Campground in the Tetons, applying her makeup. No one said anything.

Gill,

Probably why she was his first wife.

Malinda showed up in Camp 4 dragging a small suitcase. Showed up at my family's table, asked, "You know where Yvon Chouinard's tent is?

"Over there in the boulders, but it's not really a tent."
