As part of our purge prior to moving a couple years ago, my wife convinced me to feel the "joy of letting go" a collection of hats that seemed to have accumulated in the dark recess of my closet. Probably 200+, acquired from various vendors and locales. Her reasoning was sound, less stuff is good AND you only wear that one hat anyway.

Fast forward to a week or so ago. She says, "That hat is nasty, fix yourself!" I agree, the hat IS nasty, but more importantly it is falling apart. A new hole appears almost every day. So I began the hunt for a new ball cap.

Trucker Hats. That's it, trucker hats. Deep on every shelf.

I'm not the most fashionable guy around, but I do like practicality. The trucker hat with it's glorious mesh is an absolute disaster for us bald dudes. Ever have polka dot sunburn on your supercranial epidermis? No? Neither have all these young hat designers and store buyers. It isn't pleasant. A huge(?) market is overlooked here. Thanks fashion, you slut.

I did find a hat on the way back from the Black Hills, a wonderful hat from the Liquor Clean in Upton, WY. A bar and laundromat, genius. My wife thinks the hat is too steeped in sophomoric humour. Not fit for family galavanting.

The hunt for a quality ball cap continues...

...without a flat brim.

It is a puzzling trend, they look stupid on everyone. Sort of acceptable wen they were cheap but the new breed of dirtbag-chic truckers are pricey and ugly.

Yeah- I'm a bit perplexed as well... I guess it's the "trend".

I work the retail up at the bristlecone forest. Our traditional soft cap (non-trucker) is the top selling item in the store- probably because you poor guys who just want a normal hat are so desperate for a fix.

WyoRocMan,
I have spent a number of years working in the oil patch and have a bunch of hats from various oil field service companies, including the ever difficult to obtain Halliburton hat. Also a couple of cool Triumph motorcycle hats. If any of these would fit your bill (poor pun, I know) then let me know and I will send you one.

Not a big fan of the flex fit, sometimes you gotta tighten-up yer shorts and yer hat on breezy run-outs. AAC has been pushing their trucker hats lately, swag at the Craggin Classic and they are showing up at raffles.

Thanks for the offer Nick. This has become a quest and just having one delivered would diminish the suffering. I kind of feel the need to hold it, try it and thank the store owner in person.

The Flexfits are comfy, no doubt. They do lose their elasticity in a few months resulting in a sloppy fit with no way to crank it down. Plus they are missing a clip in loop. I like them and have no issue wearing one, but I don't think it will work for my daily driver.

I'm thinking a fabric or leather strap with buckle is going to fall into the "must have" category. The plastic plug and hole adjustable ones just seem slimy in hot weather, and low rent. I have an image to uphold.

My last hat went approximately 1,600 consecutive days. At $20, works out to just over a penny a day. Hoping for similar economy out my next one.

Flat hats

Reilly is 100% accurate. If I see someone with a ball cap with the flat bill, I immediately write them off. If they also tuck their ears in, or use the hat to force their ears to stick out more than usual, I find myself scanning the room for an axe. No offense, of course.

As a construction professional, I prefer a full coverage fabric cap with a flex fit band. This is superior to an open mesh hat with a plastic adjustment band.

So to challege your presuppositions and overall preconceived by us as to being able to judge a person by his hat style, I posit that the "occasion" drives the style of hat needed. I'm bald so I usually wear a hat. And personally, I like the trucker style. I drive a truck. And I like the breeze from the backside.

Summertime backyard party/night out with the wife? Sims fly fishing hat, slight bend in brim.

Water polo or swim meet? USA knit back dark tone for full sun blockage.

On the river slaying giants? Marmot trucker hat dark mesh back, 55% bent brim.

Motocross with my son. Aw yeah....flat brim, ears tucked. He begs me never to wear an "old man hat" when we're at the track or a desert race. "Flat brim only dad!!!" I acquiesce for him though I feel silly for the first ten minutes. He loves it. And after spending time in that counterculture I would feel naked without one.

So, judge me all you want....I think my hat says both tons about me and nothing at all....I have even been known to wear a wig once in a while...

There is some kind of weird thing going on with the 'craft' hats. It's a good way to see who only hangs out with other white people. Usually accompanied by a well groomed beard, IPAs and chic luxury leather sandals.

Living in San Diego....it's a thing.

(If you're a girl your hat has to be a painting and if you are a boy it has to be a clean logo. These are the rules)

^^^ Hehe

"Beautiful women" is a moving target.

In more ways than one.

Edit: Now that does make sense. Thanks for the account of it.

I was "blessed" with a full head of hair and radar-dish, protruding ears. So, my scalp is relatively safe, and a hat doesn't cover my ears unless it's one not fit for everyday use. So, all I can do is slather the sunblock and hope that scientists have a clue about that.

All the rest is just stylin'.

Found a suitable replacement in one of my gear totes. It meets proper specs:

2) Proper bill curvature
3) Good clasp/strap/clip in point
4) Lighter color to minimize heat
5) Survivor of the great purge, bodes well

Wouldn't you know that this thread would pull me back to ST after many years absence. There is nothing more important in life than proper hatsmanship ! My preference is the classic baseball hat with bill softly curved and hat worn slightly above ears. Other members of the Cracko family have been guilty of wearing hats with V-shaped bills and hats pulled too snugly over the head. Shameful really! The worst sin in proper hatsmanship is the trucker or flatbill hat which is just goofier than shite!! As a middle school Principal, I banned flatbills and trucker hats by humorously appealing to parents sense of style and tradition. Every student at my school knew if they showed up with a flat bill they would be confronted and their principal would correctly shape the bill of their hat. The decal and price tag were also removed from the offending hat. Please just say NO to trucker and flat bill hats. If you need more motivation just take one look at a photo of Trump with a trucker "Make America Great Again" hat. Clearly, he's embarrassing the whole team!!

^^Micro - Good one on the flat-biller front..

Being from Fresno you may be familiar..

I grew up in EastBako and all the cholos would flatten the bill of their ballcap (Dodgers cap in the Lomita/Colonia Varrio)then flip it up. Usually the barrio that they lived in was artfully displayed on under the bill. I know one of the reasons for the flip-up was a way to know who was your vato when it was necessary just in case you didn't know each other. Plus, those f*#ks are territorial as F**k!

Edit: I'd see the cholo wear it curled as well...just another way to be different
