Lot of folks think, ah hell, they're Marines, they'll be fine. And they often are carrying their head high shoulder to shoulder with their brethren. But when one gets stuck in between the cracks, this Fund seems to make all the difference in the world!
You might recall in 2012 my buddy Tim raised over $55k on an unsupported solo ride across the United States.
I'd like to ask your support one more time. This event, Tim is hiking the Pacific Crest Trail as a thru hike to again raise awareness and funds for the Semper Fi fund. What's odd about this endurance event is not just that he's solo, or that he is no longer in his 40s, but that he's going North to South. A lot of PCT thru hikers go South to North so that they don't hit heavy snows in the early season. This year in particular has been a challenge because of the snow, ice and run off for one of the wettest winters on record. A true challenge and test of desire to want to help others.
In fact, today, as I've been following his SPOT tracker, it appears he's heading back North on the trail after making some good miles southbound. I suspect a river crossing has proved impassable and he has to turn back to the nearest pavement. This has got to be demoralizing, because this is his second set back. You see, he had to start from Mazama, WA and had to hike North JUST TO ATTEMPT TO REACH THE STARTING POINT! I mean, who in their right mind does that? :) The first set back proved to be a post holing nightmare through steep terrain. A mere 17 miles from the Canadian border he turned around to try and head south for the rest of the trail. Wisdom being the better part of valor, he'll return to that section.
As a result of these set backs I wanted to post up and see if I could help spread the word and raise his funding a little bit and keep him motivated. Truly every little bit helps. On his bike ride, he had folks just taking change out of their ash trays, wadded up dollar bills from a pocket and just average mid-westerners donating through the donation link as he peddled. Very grass roots. But in the backcountry its harder to meet people to spread the word.
Just like the ride, this is a lonesome affair and he can't do all his fund raising in person. NOT A DIME GOES TO HIM. The link goes directly to the fund.
If you haven't heard of it, the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit set up to provide immediate financial support for injured and critically ill members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families. They direct urgently needed resources to post 9-11 Marines and Sailors, as well as members of the Army, Air Force or Coast Guard who serve in support of Marine forces. The Fund earns the highest marks on Charity Navigator

Tim's the real deal. His fundraising efforts benefit a real nonprofit too (this is not, not, NOT the fund for wounded vets that had problems with corruption).
Vicki and I donated $250.00 to the cause.
We're also tracking his progress south (he's never been able to do things the "easy" way - he had to go north to south during one of the heaviest snow years ever....).

Been seeing a lot of advertisements for wounded warrior program. Must be deep pockets for TV adverts. But this one isn't filled with overhead. Funding goes directly to support those coming back.
I saw two other grass roots efforts, one was a tractor with a trailer rv set up he was driving the tractor (old school John Deere, but modified gearing) across the country.
Another guy was walking the four corners clockwise across the edges of the country. He's in SF right now. Pretty amazing job. Looks like it is just him.

He pulled into Trout Lake for resupply. 67 miles in 4 days. ... over mostly snow covered PCT ground. Navigating on that suncup with a gps in one hand and an ice axe in the other.

Vicki and I have been trading text messages with him about his trail conditions in Washington versus ours at Crater Lake. He's had a much more difficult hike.

I can't believe this other guy has raise 151k just for walking around lake Tahoe?!??!!?! Kudos, yes. But clearly the long patrol is a harder sell to undertake, to keep at, and then actually get people to divest themselves of a few bucks. Look if you're running paycheck to paycheck, don't donate. Even though I know some of you have. For that, you deserve angel wings!
But if your looking for a donation to make a tax write off and you're just waiting, this is a truly worthy cause. Now is a great time! Charity Navigator rates Semper Fi fund 501c3 highly.
So yeah, that's my spiel for Tim. I'll lay off the bumps for awhile.

So the PCT will not let up. Today we crossed 22 miles of pizza oven like desert. By 10am it was 93 degrees and at 1pm it hit 105. I can't keep enough water in my system. My urine color goes between yellow and a mustard yellow. But the new issue was blood in my pee. There is no shade in this section and you are constantly under the sun's intense heat. Chris picked me up where the Interstate 10 meets the PCT. I'm resting in a hotel till midnight where I will start the climb up San Jacinto Mountain. The climb starts at 1,800ft and goes to 8,800 ft. I figure climbing a steep desert mountain in darkness is smarter than in the noon heat. Stay tuned..
