The only one I helped to build

Probably spent more time in Homer Hut though, 3 weeks straight, only 5 days of good weather :(

I have never liked huts of any kind. Very difficult to get decent sleep in a hut. People snore, fart, talk and occasionally even try to have surreptitious sex in them. I much prefer to sleep outside, unless I'm the one having the sex.

This was my favorite (or at least most memorable) wilderness hut, which when finished survived a mini avalanche:

I haven't had the opportunity to use a communal wilderness cabin, but I think I would be with Donini on this one. That said, I can see the fun of socializing with cool people and sharing a nice meal out of a storm.

My experience with huts could not be more different than Jim's.

Well I have had some dismal nights in hut's, around 90% of my stays (in NZ hut's) have been brilliant.

I guess around 60% of my night's have been spent in empty (NZ) huts.

I gotta agree with you there, Jim, snow-caves can be stunning.

Thanks, but no thanks, Jim.

Hey Neebee,

There's a quaintness in these pics that suggests another time and another place.

Makes me feel like boarding a plane.

haven't stayed in many huts...

the very first was the Mt. Baldy hut, on a Sierra Club Riverside Chapter R.C. section trip to learn how to travel on snow... I remember reading French poetry to a very young woman... but though I had wished to meet the Donini criteria for hut stays, I fell short. That must have been 1969/1970

The second one we stayed outside of, on an attempt of the Presidential Traverse in Feb. 1981... can't remember which hut it was

then in the summer of 1985, first time in the Bug's, the famous

and from the summit of Bugaboo Spire...

you might be able to make out it's distinctive roof.

We also had a climb on Mt. Robson, and stayed at the wonderful facilities there

but haven't stayed in a hut since.

This hut at the base of San Lorenzo was great.....in six visits we always had it to ourselves.

The Hornli Hut on the Matterhorn is to huts what the LA Freeway is to roads.

The Hornli Hut on the Matterhorn is to huts what the LA Freeway is to roads.

But at least it's clean! The Alps huts these days do a good thing by keeping people from bivying and defecating everywhere. Most of them are heavily solarized and low impact. The old ones were disgusting.
