From the Press Enterprise:
Samuel Boldissar, a Redondo Beach resident, was climbing Cyclops Rock - a popular rock-climbing destination in the park - with a group of friends when, about 3:45 p.m., he fell 50 to 60 feet, said park spokesman George Land.
From the Desert Sun:
An investigation showed Boldisser fell because his gear failed or wasn't properly secured, Land said. The Redondo Beach man was with three or four people, and he was described as a beginner in rock climbing.
RIP

Spaghetti and Chili, like most of those routes over there, is pretty tricky to protect, IIRC.

There was only one piece placed for protection halfway between the ground and the first set of fixed chains, which it looked like he had run the rope through. Either he was running out the line or a piece or more blew. It looked like there was no knot of any kind on the live end of the rope, so I wondered if his figure 8 was incorrect or there was some kind of rope failure, but I may be wrong about there being no knot. Adrenaline and cortisol make your eyes see things and not see things sometimes.
Horrifically sad. My condolences to his friends and family. I would never wish this on anyone ever for any reason.
There were many off duty medical professionals who came running to assist. It was amazing to me to see how quickly the climbing community pulled together to offer what assistance and expertise they could.

Very sad. Reinforces the growing concern that beginners who learn the ropes out at Josh are playing with fire.

In general, of all the places I have climbed, Joshua Tree is the last place I would take a beginner to learn to place gear.

hate to hear about these avoidable accidents, on the other hand it has been almost 6 years since a climber died in the park.

Only followed on Spaghetti and Chili, found it to be pretty heads up. Committing start lybacking up the finger crack, minimal pro in the horizontals after that, then a freaky/balancy finish well above gear. RIP.

Went by "safety_sam" on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/safety_sam/ .
Scrolling through some pics hits home for me, could easily be me.
Studying for PhD in chemistry at UCSB. Brewing beer, camping in the Sierras, climbing in Joshua Tree.

It's where I learned to place gear. I'm not much of a climber, but I place really good gear.
Still, Spaghetti and Chili is not the place for a new leader.

that is really tragic, it could have been any of us when we were learning. It hits me close to home as a chemistry PhD student at a UC as well. Such a sad thing
Any word on if he was wearing a helmet?

My condolences....so sad to see a young, vital person pass before their time. Take climbing seriously no matter where you are or who you're with. It's a dangerous game that requires eternal vigilance.

This is just so sad. The young man had such a bright and promising future. Pursuing a PhD in chemistry is no small task.
Last Saturday was a particularly beautiful spring day in JT. Was climbing on Lost Horse Wall when we heard the first sirens come in then about an hour or plus later the life flight helicopter came buzzing past. Knew something bad had gone down, turns out it was for Tom's rescue. After the chopper rotor noise died down a bit we heard sirens on the move again, must have been when Sam fell.
It was such a gorgeous day and I hoped it wasn't the last for one of our tribe. RIP Sam. Gone too soon. Condolences to his family and friends.
