Mr. Long,

I, too, was weaned on Mt. Baldy. Did my first self-arrest off of the Devil's Backbone in 1961. Celebrated New Year's Eve on the summit in 1965 with my business partner, Tom Limp. His comment that evening, "Do you think it strange that we are the only ones up here?"

More than once did I rise from the dinner table and ask my kids, aged 11, 9, and 8, "Want to spend the night in the Sierra Club cabin?" Answer was always yes. We'd slog up the bowl the next morning. I have some photos I may post.

Check out the neat little mountain boots.

Oh, no!

"Sam" , the 78 yr old who has climbed to Baldy summit more than 700 times, has been missing on the mountain since Friday. His car was found at the Manker flat trailhead.
Weather at my house at 2000 feet last Friday was kind of cool, windy, with some rain overnight.
My husband chatted with him last time he was up there.
Maybe someone will post the link to the latimes article. I'm on the road, on phone.

He has over 700 ascents. Not good.

MOUNT BALDY >> Search and rescue teams were combing Mt. Baldy Sunday for a man whose family reported him overdue from a hike he had begun Friday.

“He is a very experienced hiker and has hiked to the summit numerous times,” San Bernardino County sheriff’s spokesperson Jodi Miller said via email.

His car was found parked at Manker Flats, and he was reported to have food, water and proper clothing, she wrote.

Miller wrote that 18 people were searching for him. A sheriff’s helicopter dropped off three search teams near the summit to hike down, while other teams were hiking up from the trails below, she wrote.

The man’s family reported him overdue 8 a.m. Sunday.

At 7:20 p.m. an official said he still had not been found and the search would continue overnight if necessary.

Sad indeed, Ms. Neebee. An incredible journey, none the less. I doubt I have walked down my driveway a 1000 times in the 30 years I lived here.
