Majid...I know all about e-brake fires... I hauled a portable lift with the e-brake on once..The tire exploded and the brake drum burned like a roman candle...It took about 25 gallons of water to put the fire out...

People follow the voice coming from the "Machine" on their screen in their modern cars now.

I see them all the time now staring at the screen.

Yosemite Valley has high granite walls blocking the GPS signals.

The poor machine followers believe everything the GPS voice tells them.

"Turn right here" "Turn left here" "Go straight here"

Then OMFG Where the Fk are we now????!!!!!!

In your hypothetical It would be a bad idea to start a fire as you would have to be outside of your shelter and would burn more calories doing so
You can find yourself in this situation by other means but to have the option of being prepared and not doing so, well..

Come prepared or be naturally selected.
I type this from my toasty van high in the cascades. It's about 2 degrees outside.

Thanks Topoians, you've covered the topic pretty well. Sometimes this forum reminds me of an evening around the fire, and my appreciation of Supertopo is renewed.

HOw'bout usin' yer damn brain and not get into a pickle in the first place?

Never get into a pickle if you don't know the driver.

ETA: long steep downhill w/ an exploded CV + combustible (brake fluid, bearing grease, or rubber) = nice bonfire; might be ambient temp dependent?

i made a thumb splint fron a milk bottle once
Saw a guy do something incredibly stupid and mangle a finger and palm of his dominant hand. Since all normal measures (rigid splint, cast, or even buddy-taping) would pull him out of rotation, he and the medic rigged a milk jug splint and tape job that fit under his glove; used it for remainder of deployment, cutting a new one when fatigue cracks developed. Good hack to know.

You really shouldn't get into that kind of situation, so utterly unprepared. Then again...

^^^^. Ha HaHa! Dat da truth! That said I'm quite impressed with the nav system in my new
Raptor. It even showed the back roads in Death Valley, which is what I got it for. I just bought
a nice long Fiskars machete to keep in it so it won't get scratched when I get lost.

I treat my Prius like a moving emergency kit: there's always at least one lighter, some scrap paper, metal skewers for roasting hotdogs/sausages, headlamps, a knife or multi-tool, axe, folding saw, wire saw with rings for end handle, maybe a firestarter cube, a smoke bomb or two, sometimes a pressed wax/woodscrap log, bailing wire, fix-a-flat and plugs, a few gallons of water, etc. Recently my wife's car died and I had to clean out a bunch of stuff to make it more civilization friendly for her to drive to work. When I get a van, it's going to be the rolling Zombie Apocalypse readiness station.

Back to the hypothetical OP...
If you have anything that can poke a hole in the gas tank or a tube to insert, you can extract some gas for the fire starting. I'll bet most people would die before figuring out how to extract gas though.

Oh, I disagree. Plenty of peeps here know how to siphon, although that is a lot harder on newer rigs. But just like STD's prevention is far preferable.

A mother and her daughter drove up Pine Creek canyon by mistake during a blizzard thinking she was going to sneak around a closure on the 395 Sherwin grade...They ended up stuck in deep snow with the daughter attempting to walk down ...The daughter was found not far from the car , frozen to death...The mother stayed in the car and survived..I'm sure Cragman could chime in on this...I think human instinct is to try and walk to safety instead of freezing to death in a car...Many walkers are found dead...
