Turning this fiasco into a thing of beauty: Priceless
Never sweat the little stuff. Hard to kill this truck. It's all part of the fun. I'm laughing.

Climbing and four wheeling.....compatible?
Having 4x4 is damn useful but the real fun part is when you get out of the car. It's nice to have a smooth and efficient rig capable of covering many miles of rough roads. Some of my earliest memories are in the back of Land Rovers bouncing through the tropics. I'm a youngish dinosaur. Cars are dumb. Don't drive. John Muir didn't have a car and Galen Rowell drove a fiat.

Yep. If you're going to drive one rig, it's gotta be a truck IMO. Or a Jeep. Push-button 4WD is so nice to have.

Having a four wheel drive vehicle to get back into and back out of places is useful. We have one in the family and it's great for getting into remote put ins and take outs for rafting, too. Sometimes I even need the winch. And, exploring old mining roads and up washes, too.
That's a different deal than tearing up untrammeled terrain just cuz.

I have camped at Chilkoot, but not this year.
It's nice. Zero fish. Mellow 4x4 road to the lake, when it isn't a small creek or buried under feet of snow.

There were big snow drifts blocking Beasore rd just above Central Camp road last weekend. I think there might be several feet of snow up there still, but I could not drive past the drifts in my Subaru. Maybe your 4x4 can breeze through it. If you go let us know how much snow is still up there

I agree with Nano, highly doubtful you will get to Chilkoot.

Geez, Having a hard time with camping spots for 6 trucks.
What is the safest bet for camping with 6 trucks other than big sleep slab?
Was trying to access the northern side of shuteye and do some wheeling.

Take the Mammoth Pool road and camp at Bowler campground. It's usually empty and has big campsites suitable for groups...and it's free. Then climb at 'The Balls' which is only about a mile away. There's also lots of dirt roads to explore around there...and endless choices for non-campground camping.
On a side note, last summer at Chilkoot, my dog picked up a couple of leaches romping around in the water. Didin't see them until we got home and they were full of blood.

Glad you're laughing, Flip Flop. That's a serious-ass rig you run.
Cheers and the small stuff can go pee up a rope, man!
Lucky Pink has her priorities. When peeps asked for directions to the gathering last summer, her point was exactly the same:
the flowers and plants at Big Sleep have the right-of-way!!!

Mike had your answer the first time. Drive past high camp towards the lookout and find a cool place to camp.

Make sure to check the rain forecast and that you are ready for wheels spinning in uphill deep clay.

Given all the uncertainty I'll be camping at Big Sleep Slabs with 5 other 4x4 trucks. Come over and say hi if you want a 4x4 ride as we'll be exploring some of the areas.
Most of our trucks have air lockers, 35" tires, chains, winches, and recovery gear.
I'll do my best to give a condition report when I get back of all the areas we get to.
BTW, any ham radio nerds on here? Any specific repeater frequency that works the best for shuteye?
Shaver Lake repeater looks like the best bet:

Looks pretty cold and wet up there by the radar at the moment of this posting.
Why does it always snow in California on Memorial Day Weekend?
I've been snowed out of two backpacks in recent years. Back in 1990 or so I recall getting snowed out at Tahquitz.
