Glad you hated Gatlinburg!

On the plus side, many of the tourons just stay in town, leaving the park generally peaceful.

I can not believe this stretch of theme parkness - holy shit!

I stayed in Walmart lot last night, about 10 miles from the park entrance, and from the moment I hit the first Gaitlinburg business, it was nonstop Las Vegas style buildings OVER THE TOP. It was just so unexpected, I am still pretty shocked.

I'm now at the library in Seveirville, which is just past Pigeon Forge. It's a very nice library, and I am thinking that I will stay in this place tonight too(the town, not the library) back to Walmart to sleep. I will walk around the town and take pictures of the bizarreness - I really had NO idea....

Tomorrow I will go to Knoxville and then I need to stick until either next Unemployment check or my tax return comes. Looks like they have quite a few decent parks, which are good for Lucas walks and a place for me to stop and work on jewelry, cook, nap, and what have you.

I like exploring these towns and cities as I go, and Knoxville looks like it might have some good old buildings.

Next adventure you should take yourself through Branson MO. It's unsettling to the core for me. I can't even make myself stop there (just drive through to climbing in Arkansas).

That sounds hilarious. Are there many casinos.i always likes them for a ez bivy after eating 5 days worth of food at their buffet. Some for 5-10 bucks will let you hit the pool/jacuuz. Is their wallmart bigger than ours? Ha. that's one sweet creek. i'd definitely be drownin some flies there. Your new dog looks just like your old dog:) i finally got a new dog. yep he looks just like Jake too:) You really should be posting up more pics, this is a TR right?

Okay - some pictures.

Her's Lucas at Looking Glass

This is the same stream as above

This is Newfound Gap in the Smokies

I went the wrong way after getting out of the library earlier and so instead of turning around, I decided to go to Knoxville. This town doesn't seem to have that much going for it, unfortunately. Maybe I will find out I was wrong, but I'm thinking not.

Next stop will be Obed, which is just to the northwest.

You'll like The Obed. My Sport Climber Cousin can't shut up about The Obed. She's a kayaker, too, so there's plenty of stuff for her there.

If I were anywhere near Branson MO, I'd have to catch a Yakov Smirnov show.

I love the climbing in TN, but never made it to the OBED. I would get distracted by other cool spots before there. Totally want to get back!

Obed WAS somewhere I definitely will want to spend more time in. The routes I saw in the main climbing area at Lily Bluff looked fun and the bouldering area there was really impressive. There was a long traverse boulder that was just my speed(less than V0)

I am kind of thinkig I might do the southest again next year, unless I get some change in my amount saved situation. The van could have easily gotten me cross country, though I still have a little bit to go before saying "Phew - made it!"

The 10w40 oil made a HUGE difference, and other than knowing that it has that bad oil leak, it hasn't had one problem except one morning when it started right up on one of the coldest days, and when I drove about 1 mile and stopped to gas u, the battery was completely spent(I hadn't used it in any accessory way, either - it just died. A guy helped me and cleaned off gunk accumulation on the terminals, and it cranked up right away with a boost). It is going to be difficult for me to think it needs replacement, since when you buy a used vehicle, unless you really know your stuff, it's a crap shoot.

Anyway - I am just leaving Chambersburg, PA and will head up 81 to 209 and take that the rest of the way. Probably going to stop one more night, as I do not like driving in darkness.

So - next year..... I would like to have one of those "seasonal boyfriend" type of guys, although an actual real one would be okay too. I really miss climbing regularly, and was not really able to do the partner du jour thing on the road, for a couple of reasons.

The battery was fine, it was the battery terminals. Usually happens when they are loose. Giving the cable end a twist about 1/8 of a turn as you push down will get you going. The offending terminal will usually be warm to the touch after an unsuccessful attempt to start your car

Just to let everyone know - made it back yesterday afternoon.

The switch to 10w40 really has reduced oil consumption. I will keep my eye on the leaking, but if it stays at the rate it is, I think that van has many miles left on it. I mean - LOTS of people have high-consumption of oil on older vehicles.

It's way cheaper to buy a case of oil every 2 months than it is to rebuild a heap ;)

If the van was a "heap," I would be more seriously looking to find a new vehicle. But yes, replacing an engine is not the sub-$500 cost people seem to think.

I have seen that guy (getting paid to be there, of course) multiple times, I guess opinions vary.

I've got a '93 Volvo wagon that I picked up for $600. 310k on the odometer and all I need to do is add motor and transmission oil every 500 or so miles. The rig runs strong, turbo is still pretty decent.

Love me some older vehicles!

Come up to NH this summer Happie!
