I left Asheville two days ago and am headed back to NY, via a slight detour south. Drove the Blue Ridge to Brevard and then spent the night in th Pisgah National Forest. Did some waterfall hies and checked out the north face of Looking Glass.
Now I'm in Waynesville, C for the night, and will pass through Smoky Mountains tomorrow, and then veer north/northeast after heading through Knoxville, KY.
The winter was so mild - just one big snowstorm, so I got very lucky. It has been a wonderful time, and western NC is incredible.
Anyway - tme to begin heading back and so...chalkbags, anyone? You can see what's available at:
http://www.climbaddictdesigns.Etsy.com (most recent additions)
http://www.climbaddictdesigns.com/shop-chalkbags.html (earlier styles but still some very good ones left!)

The wife and I vacationed in Asheville many years ago. Stayed in the Grove Park Inn (If I recall the name correctly). Loved the area, took many drives to hikes along the Blue Ridge Parkway. A trip over to Smokey Mountain NP. Beautiful country.
Hope your travels are pleasant and safe ;-)

If you've never been, I'd recommend a side trip to The New.

Thanks, all, for the wishes! Van has been doing well. If I didn't know it had the oil problem,I would think it was the finest van in the world.
EdwardT - I have been to the New, and will probably go this time too, but not yet sure.
I was thinking, too, of going to Obed, which I have not been to before.
Because I have Lucas, I have been not so willing to troll for partners, so it is just me and him going on hikes. He IS pretty good at the base of crag, but he is very attention-seeking if there is a lap available, and so I haven't wanted to foist him upon strangers. However....if anyone is interested in climbing at New River, Obed, Red River next week, and doesn't mind a doggy, let me know.

Just to be certain you make it back to NY w/o getting lost:
Knoxville is in Tennessee, not Kentucky :-)
Be safe.

happiegrrrl seems to get along just fine.
She moves when she wants to, and always enjoys the place she is at, and has no regrets about where she stays , or for how long.
If you find a good spot, stay for a while, if not move on.
She seemed to have figured out the North / South,, Winter / Spring , thing pretty well.
Have a good trip north Happie.

The Obed is fantastic. I recommend it. Easy access (once you get there). Who names a town Wartburg, anyway? Fun campground. Good boulder field. Nice hikes, even if you're gonna skip the climbing. But the climbing is so good.
This may help.

And if the weather sucks, but you want to stick around, go take a tour of Oak Ridge.

Hey,
I have no idea how to get the right text to name the stooge...ß Î Ø T Ç H
Not bad a cut and paste, i'm glad to have thought of that.
She has Jobs, and does them all well, her bags rock and is a rocking' Ranger (who smells nice...)
In fact she is always working for the Preserve ,
By the way, Hey kid, What the Hell ? you can go off the clock.
Thems' boys are Lawyers, and they got a who's who of lawyers, working for 'em too.
(Ban The Drones , Don't Ban the Drones, Above your seasonal pay scale, who cares)
Don't get me wrong, Im a born and bred - pro persevere - baby!
but no one and nothing Is pure in this world.
Certain Clove Road residents especially . .. .
It is what you gno as well as who....
That said you gno me yet?
I'm no one special, so you can 'forgettaboudit'...
THE OBE(d)https://rootsrated.com/knoxville-tn/climbing/obed-climbing!
Besides,
sadly, snow is due up here on Sunday into Monday 3/20- 3/21 so stay south.
you'll have no fun arriving to 6 inches of snow'
a mucky Gunks,
although it is always a pretty sight to see.
Not so much, the drive into the backside and the Barn, on a freezing night.
I play, I jest, & yes, I dodge you direct question'
of who I might have one time been or not, I'm not a cop.
but I did play on on TV.
I'll tell you, that to my wife,
and so by proxy, to my daughter,
you are an Inspiration!
A bird so rare and free,
all things good to you we wish and pray for your safety on the road,
come back safe and sound to the boosom of 'spalt' rock and the peterskill,
where you will see the Gnome, rarely if you gno-when to look.
Some how once you have been to those secret spots, if it took.
you get drawn back, against all better judgement.
One feels the years pass by & so with yearning
have to look upon the stage of ones youth,
an amazing place the backcountry of the Gunks...

Knoxville is in Tennessee????
Oh, man!
Anyway - it was a typo. I am about 20 minutes from Knoxville, Tennessee, tonight. NOAA says rain starting early tomorrow and going pretty much all day - 80%
Today I finished up driving the Blue Ridge Parkway. I was on the entire thing but for one section just below Brevard. It is the highest part, and was still closed. But just before that was really, really beautiful.
Lucas is wading just upstream from the Lower Falls an Graveyard Fields. What a pretty stream that was - wow!
Today we went through the Smoky Mountain National Park and just outside it was quite the shock - a full bore tourist town with pedestrians EVEYWHERE. So crazy I was afraid one or more were going to get nudged off the sidewalks in front of me as I drove through - this went on for, I am guessing, almost a mile.
Weird. So, I am now in Pigeon Forge, TN, which is like the Overflow Tourist Town, and also home of Dollywood... Heading to the Walmart down the highway to sleep, and will pass Nascar Speedway on the way. I'm kinda glad it is dark out.....
And Gnome - From your post. I was thinking Claude, until I wasn't. And then the clue tells me you are Dave. But I am very bad at figuring these sorts of things out.
