Totally disenfranchised with the thought of cats as pets. They are willful and disobedient, not domesticated.
Our truly lovable cat Archimedes has developed a penchant for spraying in the bathroom. After living here for over a year. Sometimes sneaky, sometimes right in front of my face, this cat is ruining my life. The place is starting to smell like cat piss, the worst scent ever.
A little history, my grandma owns the house across the street and her cat disappeared for seven months. The cat came back and it turns out that the vet lied about spaying her. At seven years old, she had a kitten. The other two were stillborn. The vet tried to say that the cat was a different cat than had been seen before, but that's BS. Same cat, not supposed to be pregnant, but still was.
So, lots of toms come by, looking to bang the cat while she's ready, and my cat starts spraying in my home. Coincidence, not sure.
In the interim, I've put tin foil at all the spots that this damn cat is spraying and it sort of works. She just finds new spots.
This is way OT, but I know lots of people have cats, so I'm looking for advice.
And yeah, I love you too, Farouk!

i don't like feline, either.
they shite where food grows
and kill the song bird.
both infractions, in my book.
the one thing i do like about cats, is this.
they provide me with the distressed-housewife-
cat-stuck-in-a-tree field calls.
i had one just two days ago, actually.
i always where my beefcake-cat-rescue-suit,
for such occasions.
the dame stands back
as i hand-hoist myself
into that little domain
that exists just above
god's country.
i have this technique,
more for impressing the las
than saving the cat,
but once i get its name
i find a suitable song
and sing it sweetly
to swoon the cat into
mine arms and the
poor, venerable housewife
into my fan-club.

Brandon,
Without seeing your setup for Archimedes I can only make some general suggestions based on working with lots of cats.
If Archimedes is only peeing inappropriately in the bathroom and not elsewhere try putting a litter box in there, at least for a while.
Consider taking him to the vet to make sure he’s not got a urinary tract infection.
Get grandma’s cat spayed by reputable vet, because if Archimedes started marking around the same time as a bunch of toms showed up around your place it is probably not a coincidence. Plus there are many other good reasons to get her spayed.
You called him lovable so remember he’s not doing it to be willful and disobedient, something is bothering him.
Good luck
canyoncat's feliway suggestion is good till you get to the root of the problem

I dig them and am with Alexey. I admire that they are their own own-ness. Why would anyone want another living creature to be obedient and essentially subservient to them? Pretty simple answer but then that might take the fun outa it!!

Yeah, about that.
Bella is seven years old, and my grandma has her litter mate, Nike, as a second cat. Bella is seven pounds and Nike is fourteen pounds.
Bella disappeared two years ago and we all assumed that she'd been eaten by a fisher cat. They have eaten a bunch of outdoor cats in the neighborhood, mine ironically being named Fischer and munched twelve years ago.
So, Bella was gone for seven months through an especially cold NH winter. When she showed up, it was incredible to behold. It was like she had risen from the dead, but in all reality, she was in heat and rambled to a neighbors house a mile away, where she got knocked up and spent the winter. When the neighbors, who were renters, moved out, the cat came back.
That the vet failed to properly spay the cat, and that the head vet tried to claim that it was a different cat when it obviously wasn't is strange.
Now there's a kitten. He's got an extra toe on each front paw, and was born with blue eyes.
Strange story for ST,

We have three (three too many). They can be adorable. But they also PROVE the old saw: For thousands of years the Egyptians worshiped cats as gods. Cats have never forgotten this.
And: The difference between cats and dogs is this.... A dog thinks, "They put a roof over my head, feed me, pet me, care for me: they must be gods." A cat thinks, "They put a roof over my head, feed me, pet me, care for me: I must be a god."

Here is a sure-fire way to keep your cat from peeing/spraying in the house: throw the damn cat outside!
I have an adorable flame-point siamese attack cat (see avatar) that was the last cat in a feral group in the woods behind my work that did not get eaten by a hawk or coyote. He was only a few days old, blind, and starving. Well, we took him in. Mr. Mochi learned how to eat and is now pushing 20+ lbs (he's not fat, he's big-boned. Really).
He was neutered at the appropriate age and enjoyed living both indoors and out as he pleased. When he was about 2.5 he began "spraying" around the house (same spray behavior and position, but only pee came out). We tried a few things, but he would not stop so we threw him out. Now he lives outside 100% of the time. We play with him when we are in the front or back yards and he follows us on walks to the park. A very friendly cat when he is not in attack mode (he likes to play a game where he sneaks up on you from behind a corner and attacks your calf as you walk by).
Anyway, Mochi is a part of the family, but he now lives outside. No way do I want to live in a house that smells like cat pee! I did make a nice insulated and elevated little cat house that keeps him dry and warm in the winter.

This is one great, if OT, thread. It's nice to see people on ST still retain a sense of humor.
I love cats, precisely because they're independent. The Geico commercial with the cat and the quicksand is great. You can also check out Henri, Le Chat Noir.
We have had a few male cats over the years. The only way I know to stop the spray is to de-man them.
I should add that our late, great, neutered, Jordan Eleazarian:
was the most wonderful pet my wife or I ever had. Aside from being personality plus, he was the most affectionate being I've ever been around. If I was lying down, he would climb on top of me and pet me!

It's true. Our huge, neutered-male Bengal is the most affectionate creature I've ever encountered. And his rumbling while cuddling on my chest is incredibly soothing after a long day.
We're fortunate to not have any of the behavior problems that so many have with their cats. Ours are far and away a net gain in our lives. And they are indoor-only.
For indoor cats, particularly multiples, I highly, highly recommend the litter-robot. We've had one for years, it just works, and it's a complete game-changer!

I hope you don't really hate her (you are just saying that to get attention), because she can sense it.
Jackson Galaxy's My Cat from Hell is well worth watching if you have cats and many episodes are better than a lot of climbing videos on YouTube. And you can learn a lot from him.
Your Archimedes is not doing that to punish you. Something is wrong and bothering her.
Hope she is not suffering some disease (usu. UTI). If that's ruled out, sorry to ask the obvious: are you keeping your litter box very clean all the time? Might even want to switch to a different kind of litter. Maybe add a box with a different litter just to see if she takes any interest.
Best of luck to you and your Archimedes!

I'm having a hard time keeping track of the cats you are writing about and their gender.
If your cat is female and peeing in the bathroom (males spray, females squat and pee), then for sure she has a urinary tract infection. The fact she pees in your bathroom is actually doing you a favor as she desperately tries to tell you that something is wrong. Most cats with UTI's will pee randomly all over the house. Your cat is smart enough to know the bathroom is where you go, so that's where she's going.
The only reason male cats spray is that they were neutered too late or they have UTI's and think peeing in a different place than the usual will help. If you've ever had a UTI yourself, you'd know that they are excruciating and make you feel like you have to pee painfully all the time. Eventually they can spread to the kidneys and cause a very painful death.
Please take your cat to the vet!

hey there say, thebravecowboy...
that is sooooo funny, my cats breath, well, yep, it leaves something to
be desired--and NOT more catfood... they all just seem to smell like cat breath--it sure is different than dog, :))
and--the warbler...
i have one cat, from the four, that RUNS straight up doors, and lands on the top edge of it, :O
and strait up the kitchen cabinet, :O
was good practice, 'cause he jumped straight up, to about 'mouth at six feet' and caught a bat, in one bite, :O
he is always getting into things, to get your attention, if he feels he is hungry... and you are, in his eyes--ignoring his strong whim...
and, you can't hide anything from him , oh my... but he is still special, to me...
the other three, and one-other-before-he-died, are-and-were pretty good, and lots of fun...
here, at old place where i used to live:
leaving it as to guesses, as to WHO will knock down WHAT and break it,
oh my....
FOUND THE OLD ' IN ACTION ' ...
COURSE, he does NOT need to CHEAT, as he did from the top of the dollhouse... he HAS started at the floor, to do this, oh my... but prefers to do it from a chair, or stool...
then, there is his FLY THROUGH the air, leap...
edit for anita:
and, he DOES this kind of stuff, in the middle of the night, too...
so you can imagine, oh my... :O

Harley (the cat) has been hard on our resident lizard population, but 3 years later, we have smaller, leaner, faster lizards in abundance. He gets about 6 birds a year & I was excited that he killed two of our noisy doves this summer. And mice, the lad gets a lot of mice.
A natural-born killer he is.
He has his wild side.

We have six cats, five of them rescues. People dump them, they find their way to our home and they become members of our family. Yeah, they vomit on my desk, etc.,, pee/poo outside the box occasionally, paw at the door in the middle of the night, run across my head while I am sleeping, and try to kill me by turning the knobs on the stove so the gas is running (I have since removed the knobs). However, they have quirky, fun personalities, can be very affectionate (on their terms, of course), and live by their own rules.
What's to hate?

You already have the answer -- tinfoil the whole house.
I used to hate cats, I'm allergic to them. & I just did like them.
Then in 1995 a little black kitten came walking into my shop. I tried to chase the darn thing off but he keep coming back. & my employees like the thing so I gave in. He grew & grew till he was 20lbs. of mean. He was loving to me and my people, but not too many others.
In 1997 they started to remove WW2 hangers from Van Nuys Airport & all the businesses around me were overrun by rats, it took most of them a couple of years to kill them all. Not my shop I was the closest to the Airport & should have had the worst of it. But Shadow the cat started killing them two, three, & more a day. My shop was 9000 sq' & the property was 35,000 sq' after the first week of work at the airport the only rats I saw were dead ones he would bring to my foreman, a woman that he fell in love with. No one except me was allowed to touch her, if you did you were going to be bitten badly. Now that I respected & so did her husband.
In 2005 I sold the property & closed the shop, Wendy took Shadow home. A week later her husband ( a huge guy & scary looking ) calls me & says Mark you got to do something that cat won't let me in my own bed. Laughs were had by all, but it was a couple of months before he could sleep with his wife.

I use to be catholic many eons ago and still find a thrill in confession. So there was a Cat that crapped on my bed. Cleaned it up. Next day, Cat crapped on bed again. Who left the f'in door open to my room? Fur I us, put cat in bag and took cat for ride. Dropped cat off in different neighborhood. Was this better then taking it to pound to then be...don't know how to spell the word and phonics doesn't work either... catinized? Youthinized...wrong!
Had G fiend who's cat loved to spray daily in same spot. Solution to stank? Wipe up piss (not sure thats what it really was) and seal stank in with spray shellac. She, the Grrl, was actually ok until she started to drink; and how!
The other week I Threw something soft at errant cat in shed, I missed, and almost threw me back out. Instant Katma?
Since then I have made peace with CatGod. Smile at them now and walk away. After all, their just being themselves. Just like Hitler/Trump was/is just being himself. Right?
BTW, an ex krazy friends wife and daughter were hospitalized because they got something from a cat.
News flash. Vets say cats should not be let outdoors for completely in-obvious reasons to cat owners.

When we got married last summer we moved into a new home. A real home, not an apartment. Like, a guest bedroom and stuff.
One big priority when we moved in was to make sure that the problem didn't continue. So, we have four regularly cleaned cat boxes in the basement for the two cats.
No issues.
And, it was a UTI.
Now, to figure out how to keep them off of the kitchen counters while we sleep...

That's kinda the point. They agree to cohabitate with you. Pretty much comes down to there being two types of people - those with a deep need to have something or someone subservient and adoring around and those who much prefer the company of peers.

I like cats but not as pets. Like keeping a caged bird. Coming across them out and about is the the way to engage cats, at home they are just playing the food game, in the streets is where they are at.
Sticking any animal in an artifical environment then complaining you dont like how it adapts to your expectations is your failing not the animals.
I think of cats as the smartest kids at school, some f*#k with the system, some just play along. But as soon as the sun goes away.....

That cat-drone pick is sick and wrong in all the right ways. Nice!
BTW, I highly recommend this product (I am neither affiliated with nor sponsored by)....
https://www.litter-robot.com/the-litter-robot-ii-classic.html
We've had ours for years with three cats using it. It just works flawlessly, virtually eliminates odors, is trivial to clean out the plastic-bagged bin twice a week (with our three cats!), and is the ultimate no-fuss way to deal with indoor cats.
You can't get this version on their site anymore, but they are available in other places, including Craigslist. Don't worry about buying 'em used, because they last and last. The only thing that ever dies is the motor, and it's an easy swap-out for about $75, at which point you effectively have a brand-new unit again.
I can't express how this thing has revolutionized dealing with litter, and we've tried about a dozen different approaches, including many self-cleaners that do not work as advertised. This one IS the cat's meow. You'll find the price well worth it!

It's pretty funny, I have three cats, all indoor/outdoor as they please. They eat the rats in the neighborhood. They also eat birds. But only the slow and stupid ones that stay on the ground too long. I actually feed the birds in my backyard so that my cats have something to do all day. But for every bird my cat kills, the hawks kill 10. Should we lock all the hawks up inside too?! Besides, in the vast wasteland that is suburbia, there needs to be something to keep the sparrows and finches (both non-natives from Europe) in check. Besides cats and hawks there just isn't anything else that WE haven't already killed. Prey is prey and needs to be hunted or it will lose all its instincts.

I don't hate dogs. I do however dislike dogs that threaten to bite my face off and I don't hessitate to tell the humans its not cool. Of course with scout it's different. My neighbors are good rednecks, a bit noisy but the humans are decent company and pull their load in helping maintain our private road. scout on the other hand is an as#@&%e. He tries to bite my tires off every time I drive by. He has dog bit me twice. drew blood both times. the humans thought it was funny and that I should kick him for it. I don't kick dogs unless its a really life or death. both times the as#@&%e bit me he ran away.. anyways I can't go running down my own driveway without bear spray and the fcker yells at me whenever I even go outside. he hears my door open and he starts yelling up the hill how he is gonna kick my ass but he is too chicken sh#t to come up and try it. he goes for the sucker bite when your not expecting it and then runs away......

Poor kitty. She's doing her best.
Either
She has an infection
Or a stone
Or the litter is too deep,
Or The litter is too shallow
Or It is litter that bothers her
Or The box is too high for her to get in easily
Or it is too low to contain.
Or it is just too small
Or another pet ambushes her in the box
Or she doesn't like to pee and poop in the same place
Or the box is dirty.
Etc.
my old geezer started standing in the box and just whizzing over the side. His knees are sore. He doesn't like to squat so much anymore. A bigger box fixed the problem for a while. Then we had to put less litter in it, because he didn't want to get any near his tail.

The cats eat the slower birds, the coyotes eat the slower cats, and all is well with nature, red in tooth and claw.
(Also, I have never been threatened by another person's cat on public land, nor had the owner tell me "oh, he's friendly" during a threatening encounter. Dog owners: keep your vicious, carnivorous, drooling fur-babies leashed.)

Absolutely loved all the cats we've had, but when we lost the last one we decided no more pets - no litterbox hell, we are both much healthier now and it's quite amazing how much cleaner the house stays.
So instead of owning one we now harass all the neighborhood cats on our walks.

Yes Reilly they do. But then someone needs to eat them and we have eaten every other predator. And there are about 20 trillion house finches (sorry, I thought they were introduced from Europe but it turns out they are only introduced from the western to eastern US) and my cat only eats a few each month.

I find internet talk of cats has a tendency to bring the evil out of some people. I get it that some people dislike cats, or maybe even hate cats. That's normal. That's expected. But I sense the evil intent from some people's casual talks, which hides behind pretend jokes. These people might not even know they had it. It sends chills down my spine.
I guess that's the power of the mystical cats. Cats make some people feel both afraid, because they cannot be made to worship humans, and emboldened, because cats easily fall prey to harming hands. It's those people that have those two contradictory emotions mixed together that end up twisted.

Eating dogs is a part of the culture in some regions. Eating cats, very rarely, is mostly sleazy people's cheap trick -- they mix in cat meat to sell as something else to make more profit. #AlternativeMeat
Regardless, whether people hear about it or not, I don't find anything funny there as suggested.

Mei: So what is your take on the supposed torture of live dogs before they are eaten? Is that for real? I have seen some pretty horrific pictures. Wondering if it's part of a culture, why not harvest the meat like you would with cows, chickens, etc. in a more normal, humane way?

I can't help but feel a little offended that it was even a question, especially directed at me, but I know you didn't mean to offend. No, I don't think torture is part of any culture, and there are twisted people in every culture, but they are more out in the open in countries where animal rights protection is lacking.

From the northernmost town in Norway and the World come some interesting rules. My kind of compromise. Outlaw cats and you can keep your stupid guns, fair enough?
The freezing temperature also requires that all houses must be built on stilts, so that when the island’s layer of topsoil melts in the summer houses don’t sink and slide away. Cats are banned from the city, in order to protect endangered Arctic birds, and due to the impending threat of polar bear attacks in the frigid Arctic Circle, all residents are required to carry a high-powered rifle at all times.

This thread got weird.
For what it's worth, the thread title was tongue in cheek. I was frustrated with a situation two years ago and for some reason felt compelled to write about it. I don't 'hate' cats.

Archimedes - best name ever!
Mike: I like your litter boxes! My old guy Rolo has been pissing outside his box for a few months now. I clean it twice a day, have diapers all over the place. I've tried different boxes; low profile, corner box, even made one using a big Rubbermaid bin but he still pees outside. He has health issues so might be because of that. He always peed outside the box, every now and then. But since this past fall it's a daily thing.

keep an eye on him, in case he has urinary crystles... ?
obstruction... makes it hard to pee...
if you can afford a vet, you can check it out, or,
change the diet to something suggested for older cats...
hope all is well, ... could be nothing, other than habit...
i just shared, as, i had an old cat years back, in south texas,
and that happened to him, but we was well, really fast... :)

Anita says:

It looks like someone deleted a post or two. Might be a good thing if it was an act of remorse. I could happily let the thread die without my further contribution, but I do want to clear up some misconception. The above quote was correct about "some parts of China", but I still want to emphasize its small scale. Of course, to any one of the dogs being eaten, it's 100% of their own life. While I do not want to downplay the impact of this practice, I want to say the vast majority of Chinese people do not eat dogs, or any weird things for that matter. I never heard of such thing until I was well into my adulthood living in the US.
S. Korea is known for being a country that eat dogs, but even there, it's also a small percentage of the population who do (Wikipedia source) . Dog eating in a culture (country wide or very localized) might have its explainable origin (e.g. certain stupid belief in the region, or famine maybe.), I hope that with the advance of the society, it will stop either by law or by fading interests.
Let's not forget the underground dog fighting happening in the US, which is as inhumane as, if not more than, killing them for meat.
There are people who have a need to hate (maybe not everything, but something), and they could be as harmless as just a grumpy old man, but unfortunately, there are also people who have a need to hurt or watch others hurt. Yes, cats, and every being, should run away from these sick people as far as they can. (There, I got back on topic!)

We took in three stray cats over a period of time. In the past nine years, they have not been out there hunting and torturing innocent wild birds (including your Robins and Doves maybe?). Hey man, you are welcome!
I know people who quietly rescue cats (heard of TNR?) AND birds, among other animals, out of their loving hearts and they do not seem to judge people or tell others what they should do with their lives. I have a lot to learn from those compassionate people.
But then, there are people who certainly really really hate cats, as we already saw on this thread. Anyone remember Smurf who "had been sprayed the strange colour by her previous owners in California who also apparently used her as a chew toy and bait for fight dogs?" Yes, it happened in the SF Bay Area, but it was reported by a UK outlet (Read more: http://metro.co.uk/2016/01/11/rescued-purple-smurf-kitten-finds-new-home-5615303)
The no-kill shelter, Nine Lives Foundation, provided care to Smurf and found her a forever home along with her bonded companion, a blind cat, Wanda. Now, the shelter is forced to move (no renew on the lease). To settle in a new place that can harbor hundreds of rescued cats (many of whom may never ever find a home), they are desperate for fund. They are not greedy -- they are only asking $9 from each person and ask everyone to share their stories and fund raising link with 9+ friends : https://www.gofundme.com/9for9livesfoundation .
All the cat haters, look no further, this is YOUR chance!!! Donate to the fund so the shelter can continue to keep hundreds of those annoying cats out of your sight! Before you utter a word about killing them all, just remember, karma has its own way about you as well.
Reminder: The donation is tax deductible. If you work for a corporation that can match your charity donations, please pursue that to double the $$.

I've had the original "Litter Robot" for about 10 years now. It's never broken and reduces the amount of work to emptying out the bin (where you can put a bag) and adding more fresh litter to the front.
Yeah, it's expensive but it works flawlessly...
Looks like they've had several upgraded models since mine, so YMMV:
