This sounds right up my street.
What chance of obtaining a couple of signed copies for us Yosemite fans across the pond?

For those of you who can't wait 'til November, I suggest reading "Going Up" by Joe Fitschen. A very personal account of California climbers/climbing in the late 50s and early 60s--the Valley, Tahquitz, desert towers etc. Joe was an early resident of C4, and a frequent partner of Royal Robbins.

He declined an offer to join the FA party on Half Dome due to work restrictions, but made the 2nd ascent. He was also on the 2nd ascent of the Nose, and the 3rd of Watkins, both of the last two with Robbins. "Always a bridesmaid".......or "Close but no banana"..... comes to mind.

Like other top climbers of the time, his "climbing career" was interrupted by 2 years in the military. It is fun to speculate how things in the Valley might have developed without these climbers doing their military service.

Another book coming out in November is Alone on the Wall, by Alex Honnold. It will describe his "7 most astonishing climbing achievements." Bound to be some Valley content there.

I also recommend Joe's book, Going Up - of you can find it anywhere. For those interested in Valley lore from back in the day, which tells us where we came from, Joe delivers.

I think people will enjoy Yosemite in the 50s. I sure did in the process of editing down all the written material. Getting the captions right on photos of people few of us ever met was hellish and made me look like an amateur, but all will be forgotten once the text is out there. The concluding chapter by Wayne Merry, on the FA of El Cap, I consider to be right there with Pratt's two classic articles (Watkins and climbing in the Four Corners) as the best narratives of that era.

The 60 dollar price tag is a big gulp but if you want a book you can have hanging around in plain view for a few years, this might be one of those. Dean did find work with the pics and Tom Adler has to be one of the finest book designers working today.

"Joe delivers."

I bet there's a few copies left in Joe's garage.

Dean and Largo's book is currently selling for $45.60 [pre-order] @ Amazon. I just ordered mine. Such a deal!

Joe's book is also worth his price of $25-. Not bad for over 400 pages.

Strongly agree with John about "Going Up". One of the better climbing books I've read. Passing it around to all my older friends who have an appreciation for that time in the Valley.

Agree with above comments about "Going Up." A very important and worth while addition to the history of Yosemite Climbing.

Fitschen's book was a great read for more than the climbing part. He laid out the 50's as they were, and they were somewhat different.

"Going Up" Excellent book, what an era and the cast of characters is worth gold. I have read it three times. Imagine a time where the mode of communication was a postcard and the phone was a real luxury few could afford.

Awesome Dean, looking forward to it. These were all our hero's as we started back in high school. Every generation has days in the sun doing their best work.
