I'm all for technology regarding clothing, camping and climbing gear. Where I draw the line is connectivity technology. I don't want the outside world interfere with my adventure. One reason i started climbing was to get away from civilization and that is even more important to me now.

Impossible to do.

Never ever been done nor will ever be done.

Without civilization one could never climb in this day and age .....

We were haplessly benighted (unplanned biv) on a route a few years ago. We used my partner's cell phone timer to tell us to drink our sip of water at the top of every hour.

This henceforth shall be the only use for cell phones upon climbs in Tacoland--absent death or injury. And oh yeah maybe a photo or two.

BTW if you could only visually see the EMF in the air/atmosphere these days ,even in the remotest wilderness ,there is no way you could ever shake the feeling of never really having gotten away.

I think I'm more with Donini on this one. Taking a break from external communications and living closer to the land, fully present in the moment with myself, the people around me, and my surroundings- that recharges my spirit.

And, after a chunk of time dirtbagging it, I appreciate more the comforts of civilization like soft beds, toilets, toilet paper, showers. Refrigerator and freezer. A large enclosed space without mosquitos.

Right, for me I think that it's like what game do we feel like playing? Technology allows us to choose which game we want to play. I think that really the question we ask, and the judgments that we like to make, are more along the lines of what game do other people choose? :-) Definitely choose whatever game you want, even if that's the paleo 30 yr old life expectancy game. Sorry if, like Jon Stewart, I've been a dick about it in the past. Oh hell I just want to put myself in the same sentence with Jon Stewart. He doesn't climb, does he?

Cell Phone.... hmmm. No service at 11K or above in 99% of the areas I head up to these days in search of the Golden and Brookie Monsters. No humans either. Well, very very rarely do I ever encounter any where I go. That being the primary reason I go there. I don't own nor have ever used any GPS unit either.

Your Godlike awesomeness is an inspiration to us all, sir!

Edit: I do own a SPOT and take it most every where I go. Not for me mind you. Because of my past experiences with folks I have encountered along the way that were critically injured themselves and some actually dying in the backcountry, my Wife asked that I take one along to assist if the future presents me another issue as those of the past.

There might be another reason she wants you to take that SPOT along, O Magnificent One. Those class 2 gullies can be treacherous.

July 10, 2005. 05-022. Ricky Poedtke, 46, of Crowley Lake, slipped while climbing on Nevahbe Ridge above Crowley. He came to rest in a steep gully below the ridgeline and was uninjured but unable to make progress up or down the gully due to terrain difficulties. Poedtke contacted his wife, Michele, by radio and asked her to request Search and Rescue.

The SAR team responded, but upon arrival learned that Poedtke was now making downward progress. A team was dispatched to the jeep track below his descent route and met the climber just above the Hilton Lakes trailhead.
