There are some here, lurkers and others, that have the goods on this. I'd like to hear from them, too!

it's out in the Monitors, BR. Desert granite, rotty in places. Winnemucca Boyz been climbing out there for a while...you probably have much better rock a lot closer...

I hiked this area last summer solo but did not climb. Extraordinarily beautiful and remote. The link here gives only a bit of info and states directions out of Tonopath but means Tonopah NV. Lines are there, some bolted routes, lots to be explored.

figured if its already on the internet I'm not giving away too many secrets. Not sure if 426 is mentioning the same place.

While we're in the same state anyone know about all that granite just east of Great Basin NP?

Just east, as in after the turnoff. almost to, or possibly just in the park proper. Didn't get that close, but it looked more granitic than rhyo to this ex geologist's eyes. Also some cool limestone (if I remember correctly) routes in the park, We did some new ones on gear but there were older bolted things.

Whew!! I thought someone was inching closer to my summer hang out. The wilds look good but this spot I've been climbing at is closer to Bishop, hour and a half out of Bishop to the east. Joshua Tree at 9000 feet with a stream running through the Valley. Nice :)

Jaybro - It's actually marble that you climb on in the park. Mt. Wheeler is one of those weird metamorphic core complexes - the rock spans the same age (Paleozoic) as most of the rest of the ranges out there, but everything's been cooked. I worked as a field geologist out of Ely for a few years and got to know these ranges intimately. Although there are small granite intrusions here and there, I'm not sure of what you speak of east of GBNP (of course, I haven't been back there since 1985).

If you're looking for something to climb on out there, don't always go by the map feature name. For instance, the Limestone Hills are actually granite and Granite Mt is actually dolomite (dolostone). I guess they're geology-challenged in those parts.

Oh yeah, marble. I think I knew that when we climbed there. Seems like some details get offloaded after about five years.

Ely always seemed to have a lot of potential when I'd pass through. Especially that canyon to the West. my bosch has been on a few trips without me to Cave lake. (I was told it was legel back then)
But Iv'e never been there.

OT, I've seen those warning Elk signs out there for years, always had to wonder. But then a couple of years back I came around a turn and it was like the western franchise of Jackson's elk refuge. What do they do out there?

SteveW I don't think your gonna make Silver talk , unless he want's to.
That's the guide for the wild Granites, although GB and Minerals have a few fresh gems out there. It's up in altitude and the hike in is like hiking into the Northeast ridge on Lone Pine Peak ( with out a trail, it laid my Aussie 2 year old and a 5 year ol' Kelpie, Limping and resting in the shade of mountain mahogany)...Helps keep the sporto's down.
I missed my bro's up there by a ridge or 2 and found myself on some class 2+ that was 600 feet up the gully and disintegrating beneath me, I laughed at myself for getting into this position after 30+ years of climbing...Fortunately my Carson city up bringing of choss ascention allowed me to keep my cool and dive across the gully to a smear that I could scramble up before it gave way...
On easier ground I debated going around the pinnacle, Down an (easy looking 3rd class gully, It's actually 3 steep raps) ascending it (with out any harness, rope or shoes) or returning through the Waterfall of sand and boulders to get back to my wife and Dawgs....I took the Waterfall and that's why I'm here today to share this important beta on the Wild Granites.
If you want practice for FA'S on stuff like out of Convict Lake or are heading down to Patagonia this year... Maybe, it'll put hair on your chest if you take the time to learn the area and the "whole" gig. This ain't a car to car Ascent of the incredible hulk folks...( Maybe after another 500 ascents, which I hope to never see).
Stay away. It's serious and I don't think they have the SAR out there to help you.
Just my humble opinion.

Ely...The only thing from Ely are steers and Queers....This state has alot of hidden gems all over, but there is no work, we have the worst school systems in America, our ranked number 1 for divorce, Spousal abuse and ( my favorite) Alcoholism. We're kinda like the WV of the west.
To quote Jerry Jeff Walker," Up against the wall red kneck Mutha....".
426 had to move to Tennabama to get away from us redknecks, That's funny shite, "Sad but true", ( Mr Hetfield quote).
