Hoofed out to it, shut down by wx, pinned in tent on the Darwin Bench for two days. I regret nothing. What a beautiful corner of the Sierra.
Hope to go back this year.

Great fun.....should be on a lot of short lists!
Be prepared for tons of moderate, but exposed, 5th class soloing. Good route finding is the key.

How many people have done the Evolution Traverse?
Hard question. Plenty by now. It has became the classic traverse of the high sierra. I mean, not like the matthes crest, but I would think easily 10 or more parties a year with the popularity growing. It is a BIG undertaking and a lot of fun.

I don't underestimate many things as badly as last year's attempt on this thing. But redemption awaits. Summer 2016 permits in hand. Guess it's time to start training.

Clean rock for days!
At least, it'd take me two days to do that. Some really beautiful looking knife edge.

A "how can this not be on your short list" bump. It's on my dream short list. Could happen, but a bunch of other stuff has to happen first.

Does anyone know how this attempt went? From the live your dream grant 2014 western winners page:
"Brian Biancardi and Shannon Morris seek to link the Sierra Nevada's Evolution Traverse with the Thunderbolt Peak to Mt. Sill Traverse in a single push while running the trails in-between from start to finish. This objective, a combination of ultra-marathoning and high altitude alpine climbing, will tackle nine 13,000 ft peaks, five 14,000 ft peaks, and an estimated 83 miles of trail running at altitude all without stopping. To their knowledge these two traverses have never been linked up before, let alone in a single push."

Bail. Early on the evo. Heard they camped before attempting the evo as well. It is difficult to understand if the objective was to link them both car to car or link them up camp to camp. Coming back from Sill to Darwin benches would be exciting. With hallucinations and burning joints.

It is a whole lot of fun.
Is it the baddest, or the raddest? Maybe, but the hype would lead you to believe. It is within the realm of many climbers. Lots of scrambling, minimal required roped climbing, and great views for the entirety.

No. I have done it car to car in 2013, was a blast. Aside from the descent from the last peak and the hike out with a lot of pain in my heel. Every step over Lamarck col and to the car was a torture.

Good beta and stoke pics Vitaly. Looks like I'm going for it this summer, the sooner the better but it looks like most attempts are in July or so. Memorial day would be rad but go figure this is the year the Sierra gets snow. Also looking at the Grand Traverse for this summer so might be a few busy ass weekends.

Wow thanks for the picture of Darwin Vitaliy M. Amazing how little snow there is and what's left of the Darwin Glacier. At some point I'll scan in some old slides that shows just how dramatically different the Sierra is now compared to years ago.
I've always thought of the Evolution Region as the heart of the High Sierra, what a great place.
Thanks for posting.

So kickass! I'm now a displaced Sierra climber, chuckling at the quaintness of other ranges' traverses, as compared to the Evolution group. I've done the whole thing twice, and the first third four times. As part of a guiding risk management plan I put together an extensive beta packet for the Evolution Traverse. Not that any aspiring traversers really need more info than what Croft has published... That being said, feel free to shoot me an email if you want the intel. jediahmporter at gmail

My friend Warren tried it some years ago and fell unexpectedly when a loose block pulled. Fortunately he landed on his pack on a ledge and was unhurt, as he was unroped at the time.

anyone who's climbed it this fall know what the water situation is up high? Is there any snowpack left up there or is the only water source dropping down to the lake off of Haeckel? We not the super human types so we plan on bivying at least once on route and wondering how calculated we need to be about water. Thanks for any water beta!

There were a few snow patches left over in the shade from at least a week before when I was there, but I'd be amazed if anything useful is left. The drop to Lake 12,345' near Haeckel won't take much time, and that would be a nice bivy if you do it in two days.
