Owned a Night Rider..It was over-priced and when it wore out they couldn't repair it..Bought a Le Zyne..3 inches long by 1 inch diameter flash light...comes with 2 batteries that fit inside the light...Batteries are charged on Lap Top...Helmet mount or handlebar mount...$150.00 ....4 hr. run time and plenty bright...

I ride about once or twice a week at night. I agree with much of the above. Light and Motion or Lezyne. My NR light have been nice but all of them died more quickly than I'd like. I currently use a single 650 or 800 lumen if I'm just riding road/gravel, and use the pair (one on the helmet, one on the bars) on the trails.
looking sketchy there...

Begging the Question:

Getting something cheaper than the one that makes the most sense to you is false economy.

Another circular argument that after analysis makes little sense!

My latest ebike build:

30 mph on the trail is very fast for this tank. The tires cushion one some but on order is a Thudbuster seat post and Velo Plush seat. The tires running low air pressure make up for lack of short travel front shocks.

But excellent slow speed stablility on snow, ice and mud.

For inexpensive lights, try Cree. You can get set up for about $60. I've had mine for about 4 years. Love 'em. My only complaint (a minor one) is the weight, for the helmet light.

I'm building up a fat tire single speed for getting around the dairy...studded tires for traction on the cow manure...

For years, I passed on night riding because I didn't want to spend $400 on equipment I might only use a few times.

Cree lights are great for newbys. You get to find out if you like night riding without dropping a bundle.

The key to not dying on the road at night is lots of lights.... I've always got 2-3 on my back for when things break or run out of juice. Getting hit by cars and trucks sucks. I know from experience.

Those little "Blitzu" USB-charged Lithium lights are great. Very bright and light so I can carry half a dozen for long night-time rides.

Hey Jeebs, some places will rent you different night-light rigs. There's a shop local to me that has done rentals and demos. Might check that angle with your local shops, before taking the plunge, see what you really want/need.

I tried one out last summer with a co-worker who was in the market for them. It was pretty fun, and they were way brighter than I expected. It's about the only way you can ride in the IE in summer, my local trail system has almost zero shade and routinely hits 105F in summer. So it's dawn patrol or night riding...or heat stroke.

As a long time night rider and BS mechanic,I do not want to offend anyone's choices in lighting.
I own a helmet mounted Lupine Piko
Almost 4years old it is as good trail riding as it is on the road.

Wilbeer,

What's your opinion of Cervelo S Series Road bikes? S5 in particular.

Tobia,I have had the fortune of riding a team edition s5 this past summer,we do not sell those at our BS,I wish we did.

Not much room[see funds]in my life to own a 5 thousand dollar road bike ,unless I had a pro deal.

That said, the s5 w/ENVE wheels was as good of a true road bike I believe you can get for that money.

Felt effortless to ride.Real light and balanced.

Amazing descender.http://www.cervelo.com/en/bikes/s-series/s5.html

Wilbeer, Thanks for the input. I've been riding a Specialized Roubaix.

The bike shop here just took the Cervelo line on. I've been offered the deal of a lifetime on the S-5. A project/trade-out deal is the best way to describe it, (me being the project). It isn't going to cost me $5K or anywhere near that in monetary terms. I'm far from a professional level rider at this point, actually a running convert after having knee replacement surgery.

The one I'm drooling over has HED wheels.

I have been on one for a short ride and it seemed awesome. A little intimidating actually.
