I've had an informal challenge to my immediate climbing partners,

To wit: I'd climb a day in any Lycra they provided

Jaybro won

It was fun to climb in Lycra, I missed doing it in the 80s
And perhaps climbing in Indian Creek for the first time was a good setting. I'm on the way back so a trip report will come later

But the Lycra thing definitely needed its own thread

I think you should rock those all the time, to break up the " I just escaped from SuperMax" look ya got going there.

I am blinded by that 'Fish patch' the mom-jeans porta-sack?

I think that my pack lacks the panache of
that yellow Fish tag,
other than that it was a short haul to the top of the cliff,
when at the rap in I can wear them to dodge poison Ivy.

No pics. of thatActually the old Cedar snags, briars and short butt slides thru that same mess would and does shred 'more recognizable' climbing attire.

We didn't wear the same outfit, Jaybro provided the Lycra which I modeled the night before I climbed in them

Hopefully he'll post some climbing pictures... Not just the posing in the tights and Peace Tree tank top (which Linda lent me for the photo shoot, I wore the "university of Mars" tee climbing)

The Church of Ed needs some creeds -

Thou shalt know that Mathematics is the language of the Universe and thou shall learn to speak it.

Thou shalt know that Once There Was Nothing and then it exploded.

Thou shalt not deny your physical form but shall clad yourself in clothes of bright colors and images.

Thou shalt know that the stone is the pillar of the world and shall take pains to cling tightly so as to become one with the rock.

oh MY!!

Yes yes! that's exactly what I'm talking about.

However, I feel that the pants around thighs look is a total wimp out, if I can't see those calves, it's useless. Also, these pics totally look like they were taken at different times in different locations.

Jaybro, show off the pic where you're all out!

Next time I want to see the lycra twins sporting their gear side by side. For every additional pair of lycra'd legs in one pic, extra points. Triple extra points for a body suit, as always...MMMMM!

Fashion critics say this IS the look of the next few years, so start looking for that most flattering of fashion choices: your best, most favorite, the pair that always makes you smile in that special way...lycra!

I'll admit to being inspired to start doing some shopping myself...;)

Keep up the great work folks!

Cheers!

Wow! I was there with you guys that weekend, and I was actually wearing some lycra pants in earnest. Technically, they were some old bike tights, and they were black and relatively inconspicuous. They didn't look as good against the sandstone as your teal colored pants did. I thought, however, that they afforded good range of motion. As a base layer, they also helped with the inclement weather we had that weekend. If I had my climbing logistics down a little better, I probably wouldn't have worn them. I guess, from the gist I'm getting from this thread, that lycra pants are considered a little uncool or tongue-in-cheek nowadays. As things turned out, though, I was glad I had brought them. It was rather ironic.

Psychologically, I think lycra tights do get you in the dancing school or gymnast mindset if you're into that. In other words, they encourage creative movement. They also hearken back to the days of sport climbing, which was popular during my formative years and my first exposures to rock climbing, so there might also be an emotional or sentimental association.

It was good to meet both of you the other weekend. It looks like you had a good time from these photos.

R. Crumb--wow! Appearances of Moses in Utah--don't get me started. I'm not too familiar with the miracle stories in Mormon narratives, but this may have some precedents.

of these comments,
what a strange narrative on American culture.

I presume that Jaybro follows the usual laundry rituals...
as for my part, no underwear seemed appropriate to wear with the Lycra.

I had no idea that these sorts of details were going to be so important to the STForum.

oMGOODNESS!!!

Ed, it sounds like your balls have a far closer association to Jaybro's balls than I ever imagined!!!!! Wow, that's pretty close. That's not even taking into account his butt! There's nothing quite as intimate as your climbing crew, eh? Do you guys share jock straps too? I saw a whole bunch in lyrca the other day, so you don't have to compromise on your high performance fabric choice...

JayBro, love your taste in lycra, you need to hook Dingus up with some new digs...his rags are just flappin' in the wind these days. I'll throw down some cash give you a shipping address when you have the right pair picked out. :)

Have I mentioned that I LOVE THIS THREAD!!! MOAR LYCRA!!!!

Red tights on black rock work well...

Anyone remember Ken Gohegan? He was the veterinarian in 29 Palms, climbed well, and made tights for his buddies. The finest Italian pinstriped fabric...

So here's the thing about Lycra, and tights in general for climbing. Wearing them is a commitment to climb well. If you show up at the crag with that sort of an outfit on and climb well, then you're extra cool. But, if you sport that sort of outfit and climb poorly, it'll be "Who's that wanker?" Or worse. The slander will commence...

Vini Vidi Wankee...

I miss the lycra days. Michael Jimmerson used to sew up some dandy, and I mean DANDY, tights as OFC (Outta F*#kin' Control). He made the climbing scene around Tucson very colorful. I still have a pair of electric blue snakeskin around but I bet the elastic is crispy. I last wore them to a bouldering competition here in Seattle decades ago. Dan Cauthorn nearly pissed himself in amusement. I didn't have that luxury, of course.

Brad Esser works at LLNL and he seemed to have a connection with OFC (partner?) back in the day, and alleges he still has some all white lycra stashed away somewhere... though I'd probably have to get waxed to be able to wear it in public...

...for STForum there's always PhotoShop...

Compared to lightweight polypropylene and running shorts which preceded it, the lycra days were a breath of fashion fresh air and certainly added to the personality and pop in climbing photos. Much like the days of beige that preceded the Patagonia colorfest or the Helly Hanson uniform blue in British circles. As long as you weren't crack climbing, the stuff made your ass look good. Holey lycra, like trashed nylons, had the opposite effect. LOL
