Exceedingly Scenic
I witnessed some of the true spirit of Christmas
among the streeties here
along Main St. and M St.,
16th St. and the city's sidewalks,
the kids selling "trees"
and small dogs sitting in strollers,
the proud-striding runners with buds in their ears,
and a beautiful lady brushing
her long graying hair,
smiling a toothless smile;
a madman cursing the darkness and the light
equally at this time of solstice,
no solace for him that the days grow longer;
women dancing and laughing with shadows,
lost people huddled in groups,
banding together like a tribe
but arguing like a family;
sack hounds sawing logs and warmed by dogs
surrounded by a midden in the making,
like men have for millennia
and always will;
all present,
some even accounted for,
yet all listed by Santa somehow;
some the salt of the earth,
some just saltier than the rest,
and all with the creek running through it,
blessing every one of us
with its brownish mountain-born tears,
gluten-free,
low-fat,
and low sodium.

2016 was pretty good to me.
I hope 2017 is better than that to you all, Taco.

How the Planets Came To Be Gnamed.Min "I say we name him after you."
Mars "My dear, I really prefer Pluto."
Min "Your dog's name? You're such a nut!"
Mars "And you're not?"
Joy reigned and the planets gathered.

Digging through the Jim Shirley files.
Run-on on Sense
I exist in a stream of conscious thought
which runs deep under fertile ground,
abundant with imagery,
not counter to the flow,
bursting forth in froth and noise,
slaking the thirst
of traveling caravans
and the animals
of the wilderness.

This is not St. Alfonzo's and this is not your panckake breakfast.

Of course, Chilo's Chile is the ONLY condiment to use.
Large Gala apples went into the beans, as well. Store-bought canned whole tomatoes this time of year, unfortunately. We used to put up a hundred jars at a time.

ThrowPie,
NY Herald headline, 10/15/1900
"Mark Twain Home, An Anti-Imperialist"
I left these shores, at Vancouver, a red-hot imperialist. I wanted the American eagle to go screaming into the Pacific. It seemed tiresome and tame for it to content itself with the Rockies. Why not spread its wings over the Philippines, I asked myself? And I thought it would be a real good thing to do.
I said to myself, here are a people who have suffered for three centuries. We can make them as free as ourselves, give them a government and country of their own, put a miniature of the American constitution afloat in the Pacific, start a brand new republic to take its place among the free nations of the world. It seemed to me a great task to which we had addressed ourselves.
But I have thought some more, since then, and I have read carefully the treaty of Paris, and I have seen that we do not intend to free, but to subjugate the people of the Philippines. We have gone there to conquer, not to redeem.
We have also pledged the power of this country to maintain and protect the abominable system established in the Philippines by the Friars.
It should, it seems to me, be our pleasure and duty to make those people free, and let them deal with their own domestic questions in their own way. And so I am an anti-imperialist. I am opposed to having the eagle put its talons on any other land.

Didja now?
I see how.
Or should I ask,
aboutcher task,
Didja then?
Oh...I see when.
Cosmic's Seventies
Things were no breeze
In the Seventies
But Cosmic had much better knees
And so climbed the Finger of Hercules
And he might have been bolder
If not for his shoulder
That's a United States Marine that was on that historic first ascent, folks.
We thank him for his service
And you know he wasn't nervous!
But how long did they linger
There atop that finger?
And did they see eye-to-eye
About men in bright tie-dye?
