Flame of Scones

'Twas the brother of a friend
By the name of Ledreck
Who came into my employ
On a cold September morn
A sell-sword was he
With a habit for exotic spice
The fair maidens he adored
He had a penchant for good humor
But was confused about the world
Like it goes with youth
And he wanted to be a soldier
With a preference for vice

The workplace was kept in laughter
By his bawdy tales of mirth
I checked myself most often
To maintain a merchants atmosphere
At the jobs we were on
Ledreck had oaths or loyalty
To nothing and no one
He appeared to be unbound
But we were brothers in mischief
And it was our only bond

He was delivering some contraband
For some unsavory sorts
And brandishing his weaponry
Although I never imagined
Him cutting to ribbons
Any who came forth
Of highwaymen or competition
And one day the kings men caught him
They tossed him in a dungeon
But he secretly hailed
From the Templars from the north

They persuaded the king
To send him on crusade
To take back the holy chalice
Secreted in holy lands
From tribesmen and moors
But he befriended their royal
dwarves
And entertained the harlots
Though surprisingly
He was chaste through it all
And claimed to serve his lord

They shipped him back home
The powers that be
He was of little use to them
As a soldier of god
He came back onto my crew
We felled trees and sawed the wood
As he filled us all with laughter
While he studied to be a chef
A worthwhile endeavor too

He was matched by his clan
To a comely Lass
And soon they were married
They had progeny aplenty
And a chef he became
He would do very well in business
But alas domestic life
Was never his forte
His marriage was soundly wrecked
And his dreams went down in flame

The last time that I saw him
He was caring for a family member
Who was in very ill health
But my friend seemed on his game
With plans to improve the home
And sometime later
I went to find him there
But he had gone away
Once more he'd somehow lit a fire
Under the grandest of his dreams
And he left the ruins smoldering
Upon the flame of scones

UP WITH THE SUN

Running around town digging the light and the air fantastic.

Funning amok among the flowers, but first off...

Listening to a man from Los Banos visiting the Veterans' Memorial in the park whose brother's name is inscribed on the Vietnam War monument.

Quang Ngai province, where as many babies were killed (according to one who should know) as adults in a village called My Lai. I don't know the year. He was 21 and drafted into the army, only to die from a piece of shrapnel from a land mine which pierced his heart. Medevac was not available right away and he bled out eventually, gaining him a Purple Heart and The Thanks of His Country."It is not enough to fight.
It is the spirit which we bring to the fight
that decides the issue,
it is morale that wins the victory."
--Dugout Doug MacArthur

Special remembrance mo of silence for Doug Jones, Robert Fonda, Richie Copeland, Dean Potter, Sean Leary, and so many more.
A white chrysanthemum is a symbol of loyalty and devoted love.
In general, chrysanthemums are believed to represent happiness, love, longevity and joy.

I had hoped to see preparations for a ceremony of some kind today, but was informed that there is none scheduled in the Veterans' MP. There is one happening now over at the Evergreen Memorial Park put on by the VFW. And there is another scheduled in Los Banos at their cemetery.

I'm afraid it's getting too hot out there and glad to be indoors with the fan running. I got up the ramps in pretty good time this morning, no problems. The blood pressure is more realistic this morning's reading was 110/70 and I'm down four pounds, a half-gallon of fluid. I'm not eating much, just enough to blunt my appetite. Time to elevate the legs now.

Speaking of flaming scones, how about scorched brownies?

The other day I baked brownies. I fell asleep. The result was Brownie Pilot Biscuits.

I placed the very last, hardest brownie (also the largest square) in a plastic cottage cheese container with some two day-old baked 'taties to keep them away from the roaches (who, despite the bait, are just as numerous as always).

This morning, to my surprise, when I wanted the 'taties to fry up with some eggs, I found the brownie had softened. It apparently sucked in the vapor from the 'taties, a couple of which had begun molding under their skins.

It was moist, a bit chewy, and best of all, CHOCOLATE-Y! I had brought home a venti cup of Sumatra coffee from 'bucks and so it was un dejeuner swell.

Life, enjoy the small things.
Note: EBC is no small thing! It's a big, long, wide, but not too wide, thing.

hey there say, mouse... great shares... say, love the MIDDLE EARTH building pic, too...

also, as to this:

So that's where I am at, feralfae, trying to reach a level where I can function like I wish, more or less...but...I keep slipping back, losing control; and the doctor calls me a "Problem Child" and Stephanie, the gal who coordinates the daily health care check, agrees.

I go up and down in weight quickly and it's the very thing they want me to stop doing. It's up to me and I am the one who lacks will power, but who wishes to stick around a bit longer; and not just that, but feel up to at least mild exertion and enjoying life more.

say, don't give... keep up the chore of trying to 'tackle this thing'...

good to hear the bike still helps so much, getting around, :)

good for feralfae, to help be the mom, here, too!!

:)

love hearing the update, too, on your chores, there, feralfae,
>:D<

i just did a WHOLE LOT on my backyard... soon, i will have a whole
NEW LOT:

here, next door to my house, as, thanks to a neighbor, my mom, and
god, i have that as part of my property, now, too...

am praying to get a chainlink fence, so i can put a little pond...
though, i will obscure it from the street, with bushes and trellis...

I had my first tiny fire here in the Mountain Dragon Fire Pit (photos later, I hope) after sorting things out around the fire pit. I just sat out under the high sun, among the tall white spruce (I am told they are not black but rather white spruce) and birch trees, watching the smoke curl up and away, while a robin sang above my shoulder. Pretty wonderful. I wish Doug were here, but then again, he is here. :)

Visited some friends today and admired their garden, then visited the place where tourists can pan for gold -- and they will get a little, as it is pay dirt from Goldstream Valley. All patented land out there. Delightful people, too.

neebs, I ordered flower seeds today. I have been cleaning flower beds, and things look a lot better. How is your new garden spot coming along? O, hey? The portrait you did go Doug is still hanging in a place of honor here in the living room -- first thing I did was put it back up. :) Thank you again, dear neebee.

The sun is dipping lower. It is not below the horizon, but it is pretty far down by now. 10:00 PM here.
Have a great night so sleep all, and Mouse, I hope you sleep a lot better. Do you know about the paleo diet? It might be just the ticket for you.

Sweet Dreams, everyone.

MO' KRYPTONITE.neebee, here's a shot of the wonderful cruiser you procured. Thank you (and Jesu) for this lifesaver.

It sounds as if you'll have your hands full for a while with your new lot addition. I'm so happy for you.

But where will your insatiable need for more and more land end?Another lot, and then another...soon you'll be a land baroness!

Oh, my! :0)

Justin Yeager, grad student, was fascinating to talk with in Gabe's Tavern. He speaks two brands of Spanish and some Quechuan. Real nice set of tatts on his arms, which he told me helped save his bacon in the rain forest talking with head hunters while searching for poisonous frogs.

Flip Flop and he would get on well, Spanish-wise.

He's now off on a course of investigating lizards who communicate using color changes. He is photographing them with an infrared camera and having a ball.

You meet such interesting people in some bars. The funkiness and original fixtures and bar in Gabe's is a prime attraction. The UC Merced folks don't all gather over at the Public House to socialize. Gene can attest to that.

Speaking of whom, I'm rarin' to go on the road again, man.

Another local, Billy Taylor updated his FB Timeline with these fine shots of the Eastside taken this weekend.

He used this trip to excuse himself from going to the STrawberry Music Festival.

It was a good trade-off, I think.

Thanks for the tour, Billy.

In spite of last night's debauch at Gabe's and the Public House, the diuretics are doing their work. I see that stack of planes a lot when I'm taking them both!

I've now 7 Rxs in the a.m. and 4 at night, 1 at noonish. I feel real lean, but have a ways to go to get to mean.

I'll be happier yet when I'm back to 170, where I belong. My legs aren't puffy like they were and my finger poking doesn't leave that indentation like it does when you're bloated.

I missed my morning sprint up the ramps. I'll have to do a lap tonight when it's cooler. It's 98 degrees here right now.

Tarantula

I crawl on desert sand
Warring with the centipedes
Next stop
Scorpionville
Maybe they'll be sleeping
It sends shivers down my hairy legs

Oh great
I hear the mockingbird again
Queue the rainmaker
Petitioning gods of new and old
And
Sacrificing little things
In preparation for the coming storm

It's less concern to a tarantula
I foresee good things
With my many eyes
Don't you worry about me
You go on your way
And I'll go on mine

That's Amore

Bells will ring ting-a-ling-a-ling, ting-a-ling-a-ling
And you'll sing "Vita bella"
Hearts will play tippy-tippy-tay, tippy-tippy-tay
Like a gay tarantella
