The Politics of the Hereafter

I'd signed up for cloud nine on my death bed
But opened my eyes to a suburb instead
Somewhere just inside heaven's boundary
In what once was a Chinese laundry

Not a soul did I know on the block
They all were from such different stock
I'd never much studied religion
And determined to make a decision

I never gave life too much meaning
I'd been cynically rude and demeaning
And soon would be up the creek
When Saint Peter had seen his mistake

I decided to be of some service
Though politics made me nervous
It might be my only savior
A penance for my worst behavior

I launched a campaign with a passion for change
Though public speaking was never my forte
I took up the banner for worthy causes like
Filet mignon for horses not hay
I found sponsorship from the martyrs and popes
Garnering support with my back to the ropes
Trading favors for power I saw little choice
Finding providence in virtue I soon found a voice

I debated opponents on the campaign trail
And found hot button issues on which I could rail
And for so many voters I made a connection
With a landslide victory I won an election

I'd starting making commitments way beyond
The scope of the office so frowned upon
With the oath to serve came the welcome perks
With no danger from Angels I thought they were jerks

I never saw discontent in the populace
To run as as incumbent I thought my rightful place
Taking all bribes I fought off the accusations
As I craved and desired more sensations

Then I started hitting roadblocks at every turn
But to never see it coming would be the final burn
The indictments looming from on high
I tendered my resignation with a welcome sigh

Though the agony of defeat had long been in the works
Now resting on my laurels I'd exploited all the perks
Writing my memoirs and touting my own legacy
I basked in my own glory in lap of luxury
When appointment to the High Court appeared eminent
Along with glory and good fortune to finally cement
I had never seen it coming or the obvious relation
Between hubris and greed and eternal damnation

There's a little apartment outside the pearly gates
Where fallen politicians live out their eternal fates
To forever see they failed when they threw down the dice
In a lonely little burg just outside of paradise

Both this and the next were exhibited in the Yosemite Museum, March of '14.
The second is by Steve Emery.

Ho man, nee bee, do you have this much trouble with frontier service?
I know you find me (very) off putting, really so does my wife mostly,
I apologize, & then just dive right back in - Ucky!
I have tried since three am to put together an interesting to you . . .[Click to View YouTube Video]
and an un-offensive post of oldies and somethings 'painterish' my wife paints ya' know here an early summer view of a once neglected spot *
in a National Park that is a painters retreat and just about the craziest run park we've ever experienced,
they actually paved over, tuned the 120+ yr old meadow into an employee parking lot.
a space that had been the source of inspiration and training , located just outside the doors
to the Barn / Painting studio.
Weir Farm National park (i'll come back and link if and when frank lets me :+/

I also tried to add her 'Blue Trees', I liked it, but she felt that blue/grey was weird. (her painting)So I found her this example, she painted some thing similar before
then , like this sorta , (not her's)

*(9 , nicht , can not load anything) I hope that I'm able to load this post,
I've got it held in copy and I've been granted time on the ole' desk top to try but still no service...

I really do have to refuse to pay full price if this is the service quality.
I'm often the recipient of a $30.oo reduction in the monthly only after making clear that no change to the dropped service that i called about, that the wife also called about

this one is especially for neebee, our own tender sage:

If

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!”

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son.

And another one's gone.

John Fahey - Requiem for John Hurt
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PT6W2hJsqYA

I knew OF George Sessions in my days in the Valley; up until around 1980 his name kept being mentioned occasionally. I can't claim to have known him at all, though some who were close to me knew him or had climbed with him.

But I did meet Raffi Bedayn, another vet from the thirties, so he was not one of the pre-MCA buy-out crew of Camp 4 indigenes who'd begun staying in the Valley just to be IN THE VALLEY so they could rack up all the plum lines and fill up the guidebooks-to-come and dazzle everyone with their charm and good looks and courage while being willing to take a leader fall.

So that kinda makes up for not knowing George. But it's like dropping Fritz's name, or Big Jim's name, so I'll let it slide.

GOTCHA, Gnome! :0)

Chuck Ostin is another of those cats like George, Batso, Powell, and don't forget Herbie Swedlund, who alone did not grease his hair like James Dean, though his act was similar.

Millis would alternately mock and praise these older climbers in front of the n00bs, telling his stories to defame or to enhance a reputation. Of those four, Herbie (Loyd Price called him Herbie so I did, too) was the only one with whom I ever conversed. He was go-with-the-flow and always seemed to be smiling over some secret he held.

Jerry Coe, a Fresno boy and my pard on Half Dome and Agassiz Column, knew George Sessions from his being a member of the Fresno Rock Climbing Section (RCS). I don't know that they climbed together at all, but it seems pretty likely. I wish I knew where Jerry is and what it is he's up to. A real mystery guy after about 1977, when he went off the grid following the split with Rene.

Why Does Time Fly As We Get Older?

Why do we age and wither away
Does our expiration date always have to say
Time to go now you've had a nice stay
Fly into oblivion now be on your way
As if we had a choice anyway
We go where we go for our work and our play
Get used to the fact of our inevitable decay
Older and wiser sometimes much to our dismay

There is a bit of camouflagery going on here in this poetical post.

Do you see it or ARE YOU JUST GOING BLIND IN YOUR DOTAGE?

SEGUE!!!!!

Things to talk about during commercial breaks.

Commercial break on Greek party night on the Noor Network broadcast from Fresno last Saturday.

This program is one of Decker's favorites because he is trying to learn the mandolin and needs to see what he'll never accomplish. Besides that, he expressly said he likes the Greek eye candy.

[Click to View YouTube Video]I do, too. These folks like to just get up and dance and folks appreciate it by throwing flowers, even food sometimes. Must be the ouzo.

So during the break, Decker and I were just mocking and talking of the First Alert ad he'd muted. He said the lady who fell was not very convincing in her cries for help because she'd fallen and couldn't get up. I suggested that the lady who fell was maybe in real life the director's mother or aunt. That reminded him (through the fog of herb smoke) that he had some Fern Spring water and would I like some? We drank to getting old ourselves someday. He told me he was glad that Fern was up and running clear now because he actually DID fall on the boulders going up to Bridalveil to collect water there when Fern wasn't running. He has this bad back as it is and doesn't need the aggro when all he wants is some water to bring back home.

[Click to View YouTube Video]Thank you again, neebee.

Stack_O_Lee pfffffffffffffffft.

My buddy Leon's brother Willard "Willie" Lee (CV's first & only Hells Angel?). Apparently, CV was a sub-chapter of Berdoo.

Ride Willie ride

Willie was no angel. Wives would keep their husbands home when Willie came to town. Only met him once, wish I would have stayed home, but I wasn't married in those days.

Now would be the time I should haul out the shot of Sonny (One So True) Barger with Dick (STFU Bitch) Thorsen in the Oakland clubhouse of the eighties. But I won't. It would be name-dropping one-upmanship and eventual frustration, because I'd eventually (and quickly) run out of well-known or notorious persons.

Like Stagger Lee, Dick had (allegedly) shot his wife in the head and claimed a gun-cleaning accident and the jury didn't buy into the accidental death thing, you betcha.

Angel's Landing (for Sheri)

He only got life but she got her death
Her innocence didn't keep her
Cursing her old man with her last breath
Her soul was taken by the grim reaper

She was one of Liz's best friends and he died in prison after serving ten years or so of a life sentence to state prison.

Hang down yer head, Tom Do Lee.

Don't take yer guns to town, son.
Don't hammer that nut, boy.

When will they ever learn not to play with their guns?

YMMV

Be careful, Sonny was still alive last I heard. Leon and Willie, not so much.

Willie got his first assault with a deadly weapon charge about the time I started high school. Leon got his first degree murder charge (he plead to voluntary manslaughter) while I was in graduate school. Butch who either assisted Leon, or more likely was assisted by Leon, plead to second degree murder.

Butch is still with us, but I'm not allowed to say where.

The moral of the story is either stay in school or stay out of Murder Inc.

I guess the third alternative, was the armed forces. Judges often offered the choice of prison or the recruiting office to wayward CV denizens. This had the added conundrum of facing up to the old maxim, either kill or be killed.

Lee Marvin and Ron Reagan made a movie about it.

A notable thing about all this is that Willie Sr., the father of Willie and Leon, served honorably in the USN and has been buried out at Fort Rosecrans since 1959, about the time I met Leon.

Johnny Rivers played Visalia 2-27-2016. In case you're going to be up north, he's in Seattle for two days at the end of March.

As near as I can tell Johnny never did "One Toke over the Line" though CV folks apparetnly did.

so, without any adieu (which according to Google means without a goodbye)

What in the Sam Fish is going on here? Something, we just don't know what it is, do we? Seems Like a Shake-Out.

It was said "But she should be getting the attention, not Miley or Britney" or Leon or Willie.

Although she plays barefoot, she plays guitar with hands only. But what about the slide you say? OK. You tell me what is is.

I never got to see the Hang Tree either. It was on the old highway 'tween Groveland and the intersection with Smith Station Rd., bypassed by the new speedway. They straightened that road just like it was a rope holding a corpse's weight.

Fish bought her Stogie Box Blues cigar box from a vendor while in Helena, Arkansas, playing at the 2012 King Biscuit Blues Festival. It has a P-90, is tuned to open G, and Fish uses one of her four slides—both glass and brass variations—to play it.

Yeah but do she have a black cat's tooth? And I wonder how she gets the brass and glass to stick together.

Probably illegal to use the tooth and anyway I think it hurts the neck of the cat or the guitar, one.
