Good Morning Mouse! Did you find a place to live back in Merced? Are you still looking?

I am unforgivably late in checking in, but have been out playing with boulders up in Saskatchewan, over in N. Dakota, in Montana, too. Boulders with rock art, so I am back to work at what I loved doing until Doug got sick, when we shifted gears, of course.

Going back in a few weeks for more work until snow flies, as I still have about 50 square miles of survey work before I even begin the inspections, recordings, photos, GPS coordinates so the rock art can be protected. Some huge boulders, and I am not at all up to bouldering speed, so sort of crawling around, over, and alongside of the huge glacial erratics.

When are you planning to move? Oh, and happy to hear you have a new machine, congratulations. Are you close to any of the horrible fires?

I will be watching the Flames while I am home, watching for updates about the relocation back to the Merced base camp.
Sending happy thoughts and all good wishes, FF

Thanks, JB. Rumor has a hole in it, obviously.

ff, I am living in Merced again. The rent is cheaper than it was at Middle Earth. The food is better, too. Dawn is a good cook. She and Vern are the folks who bought my Chevy HHR in 2014. I'm tellinya, "Good friends are the product of trust."

I'm thankful that I have been through the fire and have come out unscathed and stronger.

That sounds like a lot of satisfying fun work that you are doing. Be careful and don't rush.

This new computer is a blessing. It's quiet! That old desktop is an energy-burning nuisance and whale, whereas this new job is a slick sea lion.

I need to Q this gotta-see video up for you. Enjoy.

I was seriously writers blocked while you were away.
We all missed you, Mouse.

When the Cruise Ship Capsized over Shark Infested Waters

They said of the beer swilling Barbecue King
Were he King of the mob he would probably sing
But he paid off the captain and did his own thing
Under diesel fueled smoke stacks where one heard the ring
For his diesel soaked tri-tip and buffalo wings

Steaming towards ancient Mount Paektu
The ship ran aground on the Isle of Ragu
Under rose colored skies over mountains of blue
As the venerable Ragunian populace would do
They invited them all for their octopus stew

The hospitable King of Ragu and his tribe
They served all their best octopus still alive
Then the ship’s captain thanked them for saving their hides
But the Barbecue King who had over imbibed
Insulted the Ragu King with his usual jive

The Ragunians escorted them back to their boat
With orders to leave at high tide without note
Pledging never to return with a drunk chef who’d gloat
That he stole the king’s pride in his overcoat
Never knowing that the ship would no longer float

They headed out to sea away from that beach
Then the diesel soaked meat caught fire with a screech
When the ship exploded and it started to sink
The lifeboats left but the barbecue king
Was trapped in the galley and started to scream

The ship capsized as the hull was breached
Then the sharks swam in and they started to feast
The barbecue king held them off with burnt meat
When the meat ran out they ate his two feet
As the ship went down and went into the sea

And so goes a woeful drunken tale of the sea
A cautionary tale as it turned out you see
Don’t allow a drunken chef to put on the squeeze
No matter how exotic the cuisine if you please
For this peaceful island cruise it would turn out not to be

In the names of towns
Whose names end in “o”

In which case the first two capitals
Should be written lower case too

Like a well-seasoned trucker
I too learn from my mistakes
I will never go that way again
Exclamation

Getting back on route
Any highway or Interstate will do
For I am not driving
You are right it is you You YOU
I am just along for the ride

You may as well make up your own list
Of towns whose names end in “o”
I have no time now because
The next several exits are for Chico
And I have made it here from Modesto
In only six hours hitching
Exclamation

Unbelievable and extraordinary
Fast AND bulbous
Double whammy
Double exclamation

Ever since it was revealed earlier this summer (very quietly) that virtually all of the sightings of extraterrestrials in the last eighty years were the result of pranking MIT under-graduates from the 22nd century using a prototype time machine, things haven't been the same.

The popular Ancient Aliens on the History Channel has gone kaput.

Leonard Nimoy's narration fees have shrunk by 75%.

Alex's real origin was revealed...a relatively minor star cluster way beyond the Horsehead Nebula.

from the menagerie...

One Ringy Dingy

One ringy dingy
Two ringy dings
Three ringy dingys
The telephone sings
Goin’ up to Canada
The first of spring
Gonna stake my claim
And spread my wings

One ringy ding
The telephone sings
Then flew the owl
And all it brings
Goin’ to the crossroads
To sell my things
Then goin up to Canada
To spread my wings

One ringy dingy
Two ringy dings
The man who just spoke
No longer sings
I met with a semi
Doin’ eighty three
And now I’m as cold
As the ice, you see

One ringy dingy
Two ringy dings
Three ringy dingys
The telephone sings
Goin’ up to Canada
The first of spring
Gonna lay me down
An spread my wings

Gosh, it's nice to see everyone jumping in and being creative again. Mouse, I am very happy for you. Now, when you have time, send an email with the new address. I still have something to send to you.

Bushman, enjoying your words. Gnome, good photos. Just a pleasure to see everyone while I am home on leave from the rocks. :)

Yes, MFM, this is a long-term project. Probably 3-4 years of spending days walking across the prairie, chasing after huge glacial erratics which have a surprising amount of rock art. Well, not surprising to me, but to all the land owners. Fortunately, this is archaeology where I do not need to obtain samples, remove artifacts to a museum, or dig. I just walk around, climb around on the boulders and eye them very carefully. Many of the bounders are bigger than the MG.

I want to know more about where you are living, if you can still eat at your favorite restaurants, and if you are near your old friends and stomping grounds.

But I will be gone back to rocks soon, hoping to finish more of the survey before the snows arrive.

Just really good to know you are back in your territory, Mouse. :)

Where I live I am two blocks from the G St. bridge on Bear Creek.
I am within easy biking distance of the Cinema Café.
It's an even shorter run to the library.
I only have to walk over to G St. to catch the bus to the VA Clinic.
There are two markets within a half mile.
And I'm tapped into Vern's Wi-Fi for the internet.
I'm in a better place than I was. I go out on the front porch to read. The heat is not a bother as you get used to it.
Would it be a bother to let us see some pictographs? If it's a bother, don't bother. But after you've headed out again and then come back, maybe you could post one?
I had a copy of Muir's Travels In Alaska which I read this summer. I wish that I'd read it at a much younger age. I found his knowledge of plants to be extreme. And I was not ready for the number of species that grow in the supposedly barren areas he moved through. In a canoe. With very little logistical support. A very worthwhile read.
I also have read 40% of John McPhee's book, Annals of the Former World. That is two parts out of five. It's a re-read, since there is so much to remember about geology. And I've read some Stuart Woods novels, some Brad Thor thrillers, and some more Lee Child.

It's about time for a bike ride this morning, so I'm jettin'.

The First Flight

There is a song about an orphan
An orphan lost in the wood
There is a story of a prophet
Who tried to listen if he could
But the heart is an easy thing to wound
It’s sometimes easier to heal
When we forget all that we once were
Some of you know how this feels

There is a story if you listen
There is a story I once heard
It is the story about predator
And a wild and lonesome bird

And when that bird first learned to fly...
