I am going to raise the level of this thread to new heights of literary and cinematic brightness if it kills me.

Bear in mind I am way better than half-dead right now, so that height may not seem much brighter than the light near the Arctic Circle.

Edit: I spent some time trying to come up with anagrams for The Majestic Yosemite Hotel,
none of which hold a candle to "FLOWERY TWAST."

I came up with these:

1-- JAMESTIC YOSEMITE HOTEL
2-- MOTEL STITCHES

What's up at Sundown?
Dragging me tired drubbs across the hardwoods
I left the woodpeckers in the brake zone
Twisted me gnarlywaste inna' garage
"No drugheads gonna hole me up now," I said to me
Got freaked at the idear of them home robbers though
"State your name!" I called at them
Standing inside the door
With me back to a side panel
Cockin' da dimpuckney
Pumping a round in er' chamber
You shoulda' seen em run them two
White faced I tell ya...

Flowers I brought to her
Never talk or note of earlier confrontations
They dint' deserve no mention
She gushed, "for me?" She say
I was on a' way to a good evenin' afferall

Ah, Tim, that Roberta Flack "aria" is so dazzling and pure, so mesmerizing...
Possibly one of the best songs of the century, let alone the decade...

and hooblie, a stunning photo, shot through with impact...

Leaving Redding: Auto-Neurotic Wreckollections

Twisty highway on a moonless Friday night, late enough there is no place to stop for a beer. We have it on ice in the back, but it’s for the camping, not the driving. No, plain fact is we don’t drink and drive, not so’s you’d know unless you’re Smokey-come-up-behind, roll down the window, please, license and registration and the reason he stopped us. Of course he drinks the beers, since I’m driving, or vice-versa on some other weekend. I like Coke and ice and a bit of grenadine, man. I have to, or lose the license, sure as sitting here buckled up, wondering how did I not figure in the daylight savings time? That’s why the bars are all shut. We’ve lost an hour. We should be in Arizona where they switch to Mountain Time or maybe stay the same. Some fellow from Coconino County told me about their time anomaly, but I forget how it works. I’d have to experience it. That’s the way I learn best.

It’s like driving, which I began at the age of three. No shid. I got the old Chevy de Luxe in gear and pushed the start button and away I cruised, idling along, no gas applied, standing up in the front seat watching the neighbor’s fence come closer and closer, then the fence giving way and the tree policeman holding out his arms “STOP IN THE NAME OF THE LAWS OF PHYSICS!” Bump...all over but the shouting. Neighbor lady, Mom, the bratty kids. No harm to the car. The tree was dented slightly, right where someone made his love for someone else known. I saw that bruise and recall how it only partly healed. The fence was cheap wood anyway, so they had it replaced with even cheaper wood. Welcome to the neighbor hood, folks. We’re from Enid, Oklahoma. Proud to know ya!

Those Okie brats and my older brother packed it together and ran all over the place and sometimes I could follow, sometimes not. The new church under construction next door, for example. Piled dirt, miniature mountains, perfect playground for Kill the Commies, the Reds, the Nazi scum. And then the holes in the ground, perfect for playing hide and seek. I was soon apprised of my short size one day when I couldn’t climb out on my own. They left me there crying. Cruel reality creeps into my life. Others can be really mean. Not unlike what my brother dished out to me on occasion. It got worse later. By the time I reached second grade he had me pegged as Fatso, Tubba Lard, or Cryin’ Brian. Well, I had to tell on him or he’d keep it up. He probably decided to make it his avocation (the nuns taught us that we have a vocation, also that we can have an avocation). This tyrannical behavior kept on through the high school years, but pretty much stopped when I punched him squarely in his schnozzola and knocked him down long enough to run out of the house and hide a block away. I saw him give a cursory look out the front door, walk around the side of the house, and disappear. He never said a word at dinner or ever.

Homage 2 Neal C

Now, let's get this down in black & shite. I still wanta do the gym climber. Wouldn't he be symbolic of this century and the other?

[very long ellipsis]

What shall we do inside? I want to have a poignancy, a sadness--with a diametrical thing in the sex world--sort of like Judge Roy Bean & Lilly Langtry from afar, Eulogized Lionized--They even changed the front cover of Wheaties--Stuck on something that he can't take, like a lesbian--hooked on something--continual torment--so that his only release was sending--take it out on tearing up these walls--tearing up gym climbing.

In the beginning, the sponsors felt he should practice like everyone else. But it soon became apparent than once begun they could hardly stop him from highballing--risk their lives in fact trying to wave him down--& he would, if not spotted quickly, usually end up on the deck--(I wanted to say talus)--but he could change shoes in the john, take a quick piss--dash back up to the offending holds--all this because he could just climb faster and faster--couldn't help himself, I think that's pretty clear by now we oughta get onto something outside where Jimmy Chin can film him.

Oodles of Poodles

Known far and away and round the world
Clever and talented and looking spit-curled
The dogs who search ways for us climbers to cross
Unspeakable patches of avalanche-prone choss
Are mocked and vilified and even abused
So that we stoopid climbers will be highly amused
But the Canadian Miss had to pick and to choose
The canine heroes who must pay for our dues
I sit and I laugh at the cartoons she draws
The results echo through time as thunderous guffaws
The last thing a poodle hears are his claws
Scritching and scratching now let's take a pause
To honor the Dead Poodles Society.

Saturday Afternoon Walk Along the Tracks

On a siding of the BNSF a train waits and off to the north side of the tracks a crew of bums wait while the rear engine detaches a boxcar, shunt it off onto a spur line, reconnects, but the train sits and rests until another, bound south, rockets past, highballin’ it to Fresno and points beyond.
The bum who steals aboard the northbound has a mission to accomplish—a relative died, news come through the jungle grapevine, maybe—or he has just had it here in Merced, sick of the place—or his ship has come in and he needs to be in the Bay Area before it departs without him—or he’s just wanting to take a ride with not much real risk that the bulls will bust him, trusting to fate, karma, luck—while the rest of the crew step away down the track, not needing to go anyplace--just bored and wanting to see their fellow off--cross the bridge over the creek, then head off into their respective holes in the bamboo lining their patch, the hobo jungle, not the pitiful camping spots of the homeless over on the other line further to the west near the old highway bridges.
They and the homeless aren’t too friendly. The bums look down their noses at the ones who’ve been evicted, sh#t on, traumatized by life somehow. I’ve seen this in the climbing camp, where the climbers considered their dirtbag selves to be somehow superior to the hippies and vagrants who gathered there as well. Or the racing circuit drivers who universally despise parking valets, though some of them started out that way—money, money, money their mantra.
When the high speed rail line is finished, say in the next decade if we’re lucky, this may have all changed but the attitudes. As it is, this one siding here in town is the only place where rail cars serve the local economy, and this is for one plant--still in business--making steel drums for tomato paste, fruit, chemicals, oil & nasty poisons being sent to places as far away as Bophal.
