National City and Otay Railroad (damaged in the great flood O'1916).
The rainman came with his magic wand.

Not a powerful loco_motor. Folks had to disembark in order for it to make the grade at times.

I'll give 'em a D.

About 1/3 leftwise through the photo below you can see an obviously distraught Billie Bob with his long rifle, exercsing his rights.

Some few years later, there were cars. Three of them drove over to the Cubby Hole for a hot dog.

But then the inevitable, "you don't live here, don't eat here crowd showed up".

As is usually the case in such matters $$$ eventually won out. Right up the street is the now 9dare I say world)famous

Yep, and you guessed it, more carz.

When it comes down to $$$ and food, most everyone, in the world, wants to get in on the act

Not everyone wants to skin the tourists.
Though this nickel coffee may be after all a clever "loss leader" type of come-on.

Or this "contest."

all of john's autos were terrestrial context for his ford tri-motor ... ignoring for a moment the
turbine beaver on amphib floats, otters, enstroms, staggerwings, luscombs, fast twins and more.

he offered training in this plane to pilots who wanted to be qualified in type as part of their ATP rating,

or however the wording goes. a real perk for the neighborhood was watching
that lumbering giant doing the laziest stalls ever hung in the clear blue sky.

it got a thorough rebuild by his full time staff A&P before john packed it in.
cool stuff can outlast we lucky stewards gifted with short term say so

Backtrack to Big Pine, where we made a pit stop. We were on the road to the Death Valley roller coaster by 4 pm and out the south entrance by 7pm looking for a bivy.

Whoa dude. La Tuna Canyon fire "burn area" as of Saturday afternoon.

The Station Fire went along the ridge, but for for a much longer way. It was stopped at various points very close to houses (e.g. Red X).

Yow! That's a lot of ground.

Gerardo told me that his good friends lost their house, burned to the ground, in the Railroad Fire the other day.

This morning it was the smokiest I have ever seen here. The light was eerie, all muted golds and thick browns...deadly.
