Thanks Moosedrool. Pudzianowski's achievements makes carrying 300 lbs look pretty light weight:
Bench press - 290 kilograms (640 lb)
Squat - 380 kilograms (840 lb)
Deadlift - 415 kilograms (915 lb)

Here's another reason I don't think the guy in the first photo is carrying 300 lbs. When the loads get heavy, the porters put their hands on the straps to pull dowward to keep the weight from pulling their necks too far back. If you look at the guys carryiung the iron pipes that's what they're doing. If you look at Michael Hjorth, that's what he is doing. The guys who look like they have heavy loads because they are bulky, are not doing that. Also, as noted above, no Nepali doku could sustain 300 lbs, without ripping apart.
When Nepalese carry really heavy loads, like stacks of handmade paper to market that are stacked high, they travel with t shaped walking sticks to sit on when they rest because they can't easily lift a heavy load from a sitting position. These guys have straight sticks or sticks with a small t on the end for easy grasping but not long enough of a crossbar to sit on with that kind of load.
As for weight lifting, it's quite a different thing to lift a weight with safety equipment and spotters nearby than to carry a heavy weight on an uneven trail at altitude barefoot or with flip flops or plastic shoes on. Also, the diet and dietary supplements, not to mention the other possible treatments like blood doping of the professional weight lifter in no way compares to the protein and vitamin deficient diets of the Nepalese porters.

Well-heeled English mountaineers in the Asian mountains often bring forth more than £30,000 pound sterling to the game.
300 pound is not even pocket money.

Load him up with 300 pounds and have him hike 10 miles uphill.
He'll drop dead in 15 minutes.
When I was in Bolivia we had a big strong football player half my age to carry the 85 pound camera pack I normally carry on that job.
The dude collapsed in 15 minutes at altitude going uphill.
He was worthless and I ended up carrying the load all the way after all up the steep glacier.
These ridiculous comparisons with weight lifting abilities are a joke.

This guy wasn't moving very fast, but he was slowly shuffling along. Very, very impressive, and a bit scarey too.
This was a dense heavy wood, maybe teak or mahogany. Any estimates on how much it weighed?
