Wow! I remember watching the BBC coverage of what was probably the second ascent on ABC's "Wide World of Sports" in the late 1960's, with Patey and Dougal Haston, among others, also involved.

Then there's Patey's "Onward Christian Bonnington," whose first verse goes something like this:

"Onward Christian Bonnington, of the ACG,
Write another page of Alpine history.
He has climbed the Eiger, He has climbed the Dru.
For a mere ten thousand francs,
He will climb with you . . . ."

OK, I am really impressed with Sir Chris, who is a year and a half older than me. Mostly because he can stand up straight and walk straight! My back is so screwed up that's almost impossible for me.

Yeah, the climbing is OK, too.

Three cheers and a pint for Sir Chris! He was dealt a good hand, and has played it wonderfully.

If I live that long I can't think of a better way to celebrate a birthday. Love to see the veterans still getting after it. Gives us all hope!

Does anybody recognize who these two 1962 British climbers are?

Top left is Tom Carruthers, who had the first British ascent of the Matterhorn North Wall in 1961, and died when he attempted to be the first Scot/Brit up the Eiger North Wall the following year, just before Bonington and Whillans became the first Brits.
