This is something I have been planning and thinking about for quite sometime now;..and it looks as though it is going to happen this spring!!

As most of you know (those who know Tom anyways)....Tom Gilje, a local So. Cal. climber from Hemet...had an accident Nov. 2010.....so it's been over 4 years now. He was on a mtn bike ride with his son in Moab, Utah, and he crashed and fractured his neck. He survived the accident, and is now confined to a wheelchair. As you can imagine, this has been a life changing event for Tom, and I'm sure it's been a tough and trying adjustment.
We love Tom, miss him, and think of him often. As he no longer has a source of income, I think it would be cool to have a fund-raiser to throw some $ his way so he can get a few things that would help make his challenging situation a bit less challenging. I know there has a Tom Gilje recovery fund set up just after his accident, and I'm sure that helped out a bunch. Now, it's 2015, and I would like to hold a fundraiser in April at my house to help out some more. Our fundraiser goal is to raise $10,000;..which should be an easily attainable goal to reach for Tom. I will be sharing ways we can do this and look forward to spearheading this effort with the climbing world.

We have had 4 fundraisers at my house already, ..and they have been fun, successful, and awesome. More than the cash;..it's just great to know that the climbing community "has your back", that your friends love and care about you, and that people like to help each other out and give a helping hand when needed. Also the climbing community enjoys getting together to drink beer, over-eat, talk about "back in the day", see climbing presentations, see old friends, meet new people, win raffle prizes, and buy donated stuff that we climbers use, want , and need.
I am totally psyched about this event, and I hope many many of you can attend, help out, contribute, and make this special day a day to remember for Tom and the climbing community...
The date is April 11th on a Saturday in Joshua Tree at my house. I have talked to Tom and he will traveling here from Moab, Utah to attend this event and he's psyched to party and see his homies and meet new friends. I talked to Andy Gorrill and we will be having Machin' playing music for us (Mexican Folk/punk/rock/ragaee). Greg Epperson will be giving a slide show too. Pizza and beer and snacks for dinner. And, of course, two porti-potties;..one for climbers and one for boulderers.

More info coming soon;...........It will be a fantastic gathering and a wonderful occasion to get together to share the love with Tom Gilje!

OK......how are we going to raise $10,000 for Tom Gilje.

Here is how we have done it at our past fundraisers;

Donations
Plain and simple;..send $ to me and I will hand it to Tom. I will keep a running tab of $ donated, so we can see how we are doing with reaching our goal. If you want to send a donation, send it to Todd Gordon P.O. 138 Joshua tree, California. You can make checks out to Tom Gilje. If you wish to keep your donation annonymous...that is cool too;..just make a note of this to me, and I will do so. I will start the donations out myself with a $100 donation. This is a great way to help out, especially if you wish to help but cannot attend the fundraiser party/function.

Climbers gear/stuff donations

This is a WAY cool thing and I get pretty excited about this. If you cannot send a $ donation, think about donating ANY climbing gear or climbing stuff to be solid or raffled off a the fundraiser party. I know a lot of climbers don't have a lot of money...but every climber has gear they could donate to be sold at the fundraiser. Cams, pins, stoppers, guidebooks, clothes, chalk bags, holds, ice stuff, collectables, ......whatever;..you know what to do. This way you can help out with your donation and at the fundraiser/party, you can help out again and buy some cool stuff that you want/need/like/deserve....(I like to have the prices bro-deal prices;......which means deals for everyone......it's how we roll....)..

I will be posting pictures of stuff as it arrives. If you are planning on attending and don't wish to waste time/money with the post office and packages....just bring stuff day-of to the party/fundraiser, and we will take care of it then on the spot.

Services

If you have a service or talent or something you wish to donate to help raise $........let it be known,...which will help us further toward reaching our goal of $10,000.
If you are a guide and would like to donate a free guiding day....or you would guide a climb for $ to donate to the goal;....that would be awesome!
If you have a talent or service that you can sell or donate for cash;......cool;....let's be creative and do it up for Tom.

Industry Donations

If you have a climbing company, shoe company, gear company , product company and can help out, that would be wonderful. In the past, most of the big name companies have given to the fundraisers here have been greatly appreciated. Climbers support the climbing industry;..and the industry and community support the climbers.......pretty much how it works. We will also have a $20 donation fee at the event;..which will help raise money, cover the cost of food, music, porti-potties, Tom's travel expenses, and misc. Your $20 donation will get you feed, beered up, partied down, entertained, slide show, and raffle tickets to win some cool prizes.
We can expect a couple hundred people, so at $20 at pop...that is a great start to reaching our goal. Of course, if you don't have $20;..that's cool too;...you are welcome to come anyways....all are welcome!

Great idea Todd, count me in as well. I'd be happy to help out Tom and to see him as well would be great! He was always an inspiring an inspiring presence at the crags. Hands down, he was one of the boldest climbers I've ever tied in with, and that's saying something.Tom really pushed his own limits to a place that few can relate to, but all can admire.

Back when I used to race BMX (84ish) Tom came to see me at a NATIONALS race at the track in Elsinore. He had been a way better racer than I but I was stoked he came to see me in one of my best years on the little bike.

Thanks for the kind words, Cam;..and I appreciate our friendship...my friend. I like to help and give back to the climbing community. Baseball been very very good to me. Most people like to help. For all the "jerky" things that are said on the internet (and...believe it or not, on supertopo too...), ......when it's time for climbers to "step up to the plate:...they really do come through;.....it's a very proud and comforting thought to know that the climbing community really cares and will come through big time. This post is about that giving spirit and the desire of climbers to help out friends like Tom Gilje when they need a helping hand;.....it's amazing and wonderful, and I am proud to be a part of this community.

Looks like I'll be out of town, way out of town, that week. The only week this spring (this year, actually) that I have something booked, flights and everything. Damn.

This sounds like a fantastic get together. Met Todd just a few weeks ago, what a great guy, living at J-Tree ground zero, the epicenter of Joshua Tree and the amazing group of people who have climbed and hung out there over the last three decades. Todd is alway happy to help others.

Ran into Tom a few times in Moab, while visiting Eric Bjornstad. Tom is a super nice guy. It's tragic, unthinkable what happened.

I'm sending a check your way, and a couple Desert Towers books to sell.

So, I don't even know this piker Gilje, but he sure as heck inspired me.

I'm not sure if the stories came through Linus or Eric or flipping what's his name? Bike in the tree 1985-era guy? Sewed tons of stuff. Oh yeah, Kyle. He always made me pay and I was always broker than heck. But they were wildly inspirational (the stories about this Gilje ocker). Wildly inspirational.

[Wait, Tom. Didn't you show up in about 90 or so? Do I have the dates outta ... oh, wait. Who cares????!!!]

Moving on .... There was this old guy staying with me a few years ago (2009), and apparently he took some really nice pics in the 1960s of ... dang, what's that place in California called? Anyway. I asked him to sign in very big scrawl his name to some book he knew about.

Pictures (really bad ones) attached.

I was going to give the book to a friend. Until he told me what a slice I am. So, I'd like to sell the book to raise money for Tom.

Please let me know if you'd like to have this book and please let me know how much you can send (via Todd) for Tom.

First and foremost, thank you for organizing this and all of the other similar things you've done over the years.

Valarie and I will be out of town so we can't attend, but a check for Tom in the amount of $200 is going in the mail to you, along with a bunch of goodies to raffle, auction or whatever else you want to use them for. I'm happy to be a part of the climbing tribe and am always touched to see how everyone comes together when one of our own is in need.

I'd also like to challenge those that have already committed to send money to dig deeper if they can. $10,000 is an admirable goal, but it won't go far in today's world. I know we can all do better than that. Whenever Tom put up a new route it instantly went on my list of routes to do and the challenge, enjoyment, and sometimes fear that I've experienced on his routes is more than worth any money I have to donate...

The pictures I have posted of Tom, as I said earlier, I have "borrowed" from Tom's facebook page. Some are Greg Epperson's, some are Mari Gingery's.....I actually do not know who to credit for the pictures. Whoever took these cool pics...thank you;..hope you don't mind be borrowing them! If you have pics of Tom, please share;...the imagines of Tom climbing are powerful and awesome and mega-rad! The pictures of Tom and his post accident are equally as powerful and awesome and mega-rad! Perhaps they are this way because Tom is powerful and awesome and mega-rad!....(just guessing...).
Keep on keeping on, and a big huge thank you to all who have stepped up already!......it's really really cool to see and makes me proud to be a part of such a caring and fricken awesome community of the best people anywhere.......I have a feeling we are just getting started with the love that will come pouring in for Tom Gilje. Just wait and see!

Mimi and me are definitely coming and bringing something sweet for auction!

I met Tom at the care center in Moab when I interviewed Eric Bjornstad a while ago. Tom looked after Eric and had his ear in the room as much as he could to hear stories.

Tom Gilje is a fine man in a tough situation and well worth supporting so I am glad that you are once again demonstrating the power of compassionate community leadership and organizing this gathering. It takes vision and love to make these events happen and you, Maestro Gordon, have both in abundance and good on you for it. That your kids are going to grow up knowing the value of pitching in and helping out others by your example moves all of this good work forward.

I look forward to seeing everyone again in April.

Here are the three pieces I am donating for the benefit.
I am asking for a minimum donation of $35 for each piece, or more if you can afford more (I guess there will be an auction?). These are all matted and framed so the cost of the materials is at least double that. I am pricing the minimum low so that Tom gets some cash!!

The second two are based on photos that I took from my (deceased) friend's former house in Swall Meadows. My heart is heavy this morning on news that fire has run through that beautiful area/

Been recieving checks in the mail;..thank you. You checks will be put to good use by Tom. When I talked to Tom, I asked him what he could use some extra money for. He obviously needs travel money for himself and his caregiver to take this road trip to California for the fundraiser/party (Horray!!).....
He is looking forward to seeing his daughter, who lives in Hemet, and, of course, seeing all his old climbing buddies, as well as meeting new friends.
He has been living at an assisted living facility for years now, and will soon be moving into a house or trailer;..this will be a big move and big adjustment.
He says he would like a new electric wheelchair maybe..perhaps a van that his caregiver could drive with him.....or maybe even a modified van that he could drive;...if something like that would work out.
Stuff like that........along with pot, beer, gambling, hookers, and meth................(just kidding...)........
Anyways....he is very "blown away" at all the outpouring of love and care that the climbing community has thrown down so far. It's fantastic stuff!....and he's way stoked and proud to be coming to Joshua tree for a visit and party!...
Keep on keeping on and help us reach our goal;...and beyond!
and thank you all for the support so early in the planning of this awesome event and gathering.
(We will have gluten free chlorine too, by the way..)..

Craig;...to keep things simple, there will be a few things auctioned on supertopo.....and a few things silent auctioned at the event;.....rest will be either set price, set your own price (donation), or raffle prizes.

I want to have a $20 donation for those that show up;........
This is to cover the cost of the party (rented porta-potties, food, gallons of beer, music, travel costs for Tom and party to attend this event, etc), and reach our fundraiser goal of $10,000.

For your $20 donation (which means if you don't have it;...that's not a problem).......you get
1. a raffle ticket for mega cool prizes (I mean some cool shit;......gear, clothes, collectables, rare cool unique stuff......all donated;..so keep it coming in!)...and if you wish for more raffle tickets for more chances to win;..you can purchaise more at the event ($5).

Here is another donated item up for supertopo auction. It was make by Tom's dear friend Robyn Erler, and she made it to help raise money for this fundraiser for Tom.

Here are the stats on this wonderful art piece. It is 139 pieces and measures 17" X 12 1/2". (tom has a similar one made by Robyn for him at his place in Moab)... Starting bid of $300.

Wow, its "T the Ho from He"! Looking forward to this gathering and especially looking forward to see you again. It's been a long time, probably Needles in the early 90's. You were always an inspiration to me & many others I knew and respected. I watched you solo Insomnia once and my mind was blown. It was 1985, I had just done a no falls ascent of Astroman and had gone back to Suicide to try and lead the Insomnia crack. I did it clean, but really had to work hard for it. It seemed so out there. Suddenly, these guys come around the corner from the pirate and this one guy shoes up and launches up Insomnia. My friends and I are thinking what the heck is this? Are we going to see somebody die right now?

No the guy just goes up and cruises the thing like its 5.7. Later that day Clark rolls by and I tell him what we saw. He asks for a description and tells me Oh, that's Tom. I couldn't wrap my head around the fact that you could free solo so casually. The few people who soloed at that level included Croft & Bachar, so you were in pretty rarefied company.

You really could get rad things done on the rock. I'm pretty sure straight to hell still has not had a second ascent.I sure hope a bunch of people come out and lend their support to a great guy.

Just a FYI;....Kids are welcome at this fundraiser;..but it's not a kids party, and 99% of those attending will be adults. My three children will be there...but the twins (age 8 ) will leave or crash out at 8 or 9 PM...my son Beck (age 10) can stay up as late as he wishes. So, to sum it up;..kids are welcome although it's mostly an adult attended event. If you look at the pics from previous fundraiser/parties...mostly adults. But if you are planning on attending with your child;.....that is fine.

If you are planning travel arrangements, you have lots of options for places to stay. Camping in the Park, motels, BLM camping, bed and breakfasts, weekend rentals, and if you drink at the party (or just wish to stay late or hang out), you are welcome to camp on the property;..I have lots of room for tents, car camping , or just throwing the bag out in the desert.........let me know if you have any questions or special needs that I can help you with...

Hey Todd, I tried to book a motel in JTree for Friday night and was told at two places there is a 2-3 night minimum because there is a "Festival" that weekend in JTree. I've stayed at both places for years and don't think I misunderstood them...........Recommend taking care of your lodging asap.

well, the FEATHERS hand DOWNWARD by the thin leather strips...

and their is a 'thin loop' at the top, to hang them by... you can hang them on a pole, or just lay them out on the tables...

also, the frames on the artwork, were for mailing, and protection...
most likely folks will not really enjoy the frames, but that was the
best that i could do... :(

they are oil and please put a NOTE:
not to be 'wiped' etc... for a few months...

This is a very rare and mega-cool item. Most people have these for collectables....but I used mine all the time in the mountains (up until the day I sold my to pay the bills!).....

It's an original Chouinard Zero ice axe with the hammer head;...looks to be either bamboo or ash shaft....and it's in very good condition...

Probably have this one up for silent auction...

On the right there;....9 leeper "Z" pitons;...worth their weight in gold;...great for stacking and very hard to find. Dave Evans and I used to covet the ones we had, and we loved them like we loved our mamas.....and we used them alot out in the desert southwest and in The Valley and elsewhere. I don't do much aid climbing anymore, but just the site of these pitons fills my breast with desire.....(picture that...)..

Lost Rock Area
This crag is near the Hospital in Joshua Tree. It is best accessed off of Hwy 62 from Sunkist Rd. (about 1 mile east of Hospital). Turn south on Sunkist from Hwy 62 and drive about a mile until you come to a fence (National Park boundry). Park here and hike straight south to the hillside with large split boulders at the base and a few slabs on the hillside. This is the Lost Rock area. Allow about 35 minutes for the approach. You can also get there from Section Six (Onaga Trail) in Joshua Tree off of Park Blvd. Drive up Park Blvd. for about one mile until you come to Onaga Trail (Section Six ) on your left (east). Drive east on this dirt road a couple of miles until it turns to a 4X4 road. Park here (If you don't have four-wheel-drive) and walk about one mile to the National Park boundry. If you have a 4X4 vehicle, drive another mile on this road until you come to the National Park boundry. Park and hike east ten minutes to a hillside with a slab and some large boulders at the base.

(176) Boing Loin (5.10)**
Six bolts to a bolted anchor on the east face of a beautiful boulder at the base of the hillside. This excellent climb traverses right to left on a white dike.

(177) Fried Monkey Butt (5.10-)*
Located on a very smooth slab just above Boing Loin on the hillside. Friction up a blank slippery slab past four bolts to cold shuts. Faces north.

Nearby worthwhile climbs: There are five routes on the big slab above Boing Loin and Fried Monkey Butt (The Panorama Heights Slab). Some have bolts to anchors and could be considered sport climbs.

The Fried Monkey Butt is a very cool climb...but not as cool as the Boing Loin, which is nearby......it's outstanding....here are some pics of it..

From this last picture...fried monkey butt is the smooth slab in the center of the picture;......Boing Loin is down on the boulders down and at the bottom left. This picture was taken from the very end of onaga road (section six).....coming from the west and looking to the east. You can see these crags from hwy 62 as you travel east past the hospital......just look to the south on the side of the hill......

Directions to the Gordon Ranch

From the town of Joshua Tree, drive south on Park Blvd towards the National Park. After about 2 miles, turn right on Rincon, then left on Star. I am the very very last house on Star Lane. 9561 Star Lane.
Parking can get a bit tricky, but the eariler you arrive, the closer you can get to the house. You may arrive anytime on Sat.....if you get there too early, I may put you to work....
If you wish to tent camp or car camp;..that is fine. If you need suggestions as to cool places to pitch a tent;....ask me and I can show you some very nice quiet spots.
I am saying that things start a 5 PM...but you may want to get there a bit earlier and get better parking and "settle in" for the evening.
Please if you have been drinking...just sleep in your car or on the living room floor or whatever. Just ask me if you need any help with this;....(sleeping bag, blanket, floor space, barf bag...whatever)...

PETS AND CHILDREN

Children are welcome but this is not a kids event;...It's an adult party. My kids will be there for part of the evening, and then probably leave to grandparents or go to bed. My oldest son Beck will be there and can stay up as late as he wishes. Again, it's your call on bringing your children.

Pets;.......well;....one of the parties here we did have a dog fight and someone got bite and I had a lawsuit filed against me. Probably best to leave the pets at home...but if you do have a dog, cat or fish that is traveling with you;.....it's up to you.......keep pets and people safe!

Canadians
As you know, it's difficult to keep our borders secure and there will be a few Canadians attending. Most Canadians are actually quite friendly and fun, ...but then there is Justin Bieber;...just wanted to be up front and out in the open with this. We do have a separate porti-pottie for Locker, boulderers and Canadians.

This fundraiser is an opportunity to help out Tom Gilje, to get together with our homies and commune and par-tay, and to go rock climbing. Yeah, it's a fund raiser, and I know that I am an "psyched" fundraiser. But;....it's all donations. You give what you can and what you wish to give. If you are a dirtbag climber with little or no money;.....donate a quarter;..that is fine!........For you quarter, we still have a supertopo high sierra guidebook, Greg Epperson's Rock prints book, a raffle ticket, unlimited pizza and beer, epperson slide show, three bands, tequilla bar, free camping, meet and greet with tucker tech...even use of the porti-pottie.....Everyone is welcome!

Lost Rock Area
This crag is near the Hospital in Joshua Tree. It is best accessed off of Hwy 62 from Sunkist Rd. (about 1 mile east of Hospital). Turn south on Sunkist from Hwy 62 and drive about a mile until you come to a fence (National Park boundry). Park here and hike straight south to the hillside with large split boulders at the base and a few slabs on the hillside. This is the Lost Rock area. Allow about 35 minutes for the approach. You can also get there from Section Six (Onaga Trail) in Joshua Tree off of Park Blvd. Drive up Park Blvd. for about one mile until you come to Onaga Trail (Section Six ) on your left (east). Drive east on this dirt road a couple of miles until it turns to a 4X4 road. Park here (If you don't have four-wheel-drive) and walk about one mile to the National Park boundry. If you have a 4X4 vehicle, drive another mile on this road until you come to the National Park boundry. Park and hike east ten minutes to a hillside with a slab and some large boulders at the base.

(176) Boing Loin (5.10)**
Six bolts to a bolted anchor on the east face of a beautiful boulder at the base of the hillside. This excellent climb traverses right to left on a white dike.

Located on a very smooth slab just above Boing Loin on the hillside. Friction up a blank slippery slab past four bolts to cold shuts. Faces north.

PETA Crags Area

This climbing area is on the hillside and nearby hidden valleys just southwest of 29 Palms. The PETA Crag can easily be seen from the Del Taco in 29 Palms on Hwy 62 (near the Motel 6). So far there have been 13 routes done with seven of them on the PETA Crag. The PETA Crag is about a 45 minute hike. Clifton Giblet is about an hour while the rest of the formations are 1 hour or more. Turn off Hwy 62 at Mesquite Springs Rd, which is about 1/2 mile west from downtown 29 Palms. Drive about 1/2 mile to the end of Mesquite Springs Road past some houses. Park and hike up canyon (south) to the PETA Crag. All the climbing is within Joshua Tree National Park.

Tucker Tech on The Howling Monkey (5.7) on The Giblet

The Giblet
This cliff is not visible from the road or approach and only seen after you hike in the canyon for maybe 1/2 hour or so. It is located up the valley from the PETA Crag on the left (north) side of the wash. There are only two climbs on The Giblet and both are sport climbs.

(163) Clifton Giblet (5.10c)*
This climb goes past four bolts to a loose crack/ramp up and right, then up a weakness/crack to the top. The top of this climb is loose and difficult. The fourth bolt is doubled, so you can rappel before the loose/difficult/irritating part. If you continue past the doubled fouth bolt, you need to bring some trad gear. To get off the top, you need to jump across an exposed chasm on the backside. The climb is excellent to the fourth bolt and "an excellent adventure" to the top (i.e. that part sucks).

(164) Howling Monkey (5.7)*
Start the same as for Clifton Giblet but instead of going up after the first bolt, traverse right all the way to the right edge of the formation to a cool stance on a small ledge. There are four or five bolts on this climb to a two bolt rap station.

Saturday nite may be a bit crowded and noisey here at the Gordon Ranch...but at least no rangers/camp fees...and there are some quiet places back behind the house;.......best to set up early while it's lite and you can see.....

We may have famous Southwest Artist Kim Nelson-Perrin, displaying and selling some of her mega-awesome art work and donating a % of her sales to Tom Gilje.......it's some really cool stuff. She sell most of her art to "indian" stores, art galleries, and private collections;....but she is willing to share with us;...check out her work.

It's been a while since my last post, but feel the need to participate in this shindig. I was invited to attend because I'm also a gimp in a wheelchair who once was a climber. It makes me sad to hear about Tom's injury, but happy to maybe make a new friend. My buddy Steve Belford gave me Tom's number a month ago and I finally got the courage to call Tom last week. I don't know him personally and wasn't sure how he would perceive some lame ass dude calling him out of the blue. The conversation started out nervous for me at first, but Tom said he was glad to talk to me and I was at ease after that. We are both in a club that nobody ever wants to join, in it because of some accident or something beyond our control. I miss climbing and I’m sure Tom does too! I’m looking forward to meeting Tom in person at Todd Gordon’s generous fundraiser/party. It will make us both feel like climbers once again.

Just a heads up... I'm bringing out two copies of a map I made of the Wonderland of Rocks in Joshua Tree with all (within reason) the formations labeled. The map is 20" x 30" and color, although the formations are grey. There's an alphabetic list of the formations on the left side and a letter/number key with the names that corresponds to a grid of letters and numbers along the top and sides for locating formations. This isn't available anywhere else, done specifically for this event, so this is a one-shot deal if it's something you're interested in.

OK, Todd. You have won me over on this one. Your heart is Solid Gold.

So, my wife, 17yr young daughter & I will leave NW Montana on Friday, 3PM right when school gets out and plow straight thru to your place in our Sprinter van. It'll be ugly but we should show up around 1PM or 2PM. Please give us consideration for the glazed look in our eyes after the 22 hour non-stop run. It's a cargo van, not a plush and quiet Sportsmobile!

I have a hundred dollar bill in my pocket I'd like to exchange for a place to park (at least for the party night) and some good, personal beta on the park. Preferably that would include one day of Joshua Tree touring. Get to hang together and basically point us at appropriate routes. You wouldn't have to take care of us.

I have climbed at J-Tree just twice in years past, mostly around the Hidden and Real Hidden Valley; very little in a nut shell. I will also be looking for inside beta on scoring a campsite I suppose in JT. We can stay and climb probably till Thursday.

Was down at a pool party in La Quinta yesterday, and Mike Fogarty and Chuck Clancy stopped by to drop off a check for Tom and a chunk of cash to get things started on the ice and beer (I bought four kiddie pools to hold all the ice and beer!).
It was great to see these gentlemen, and wonderful to see people stepping up, reaching out, and really and sincerely wanting to help out. Caring about each other and throwing it down.
I've known Mike for probably 35 years;.....always great to see him and always impressed with his climbing, ability to get the job done, and his willingness to help out and be a friend.
Makes me proud to be a part of this fundraiser, and proud to be a rock climber and Mike's friend. Pool party, great friends, wonderful weather, ......yesterday was a FANTASTIC day in so many ways!
Big thanks to Mike and Chuck;..you guys RULE! Mike belongs in the superman shirt, no doubt!

We are starting to get going on the beer;........off to a good start;...(this is probably enough for Tucker Tech and Robert Fonda.....maybe.........naaah..probably not....but it's a start).
If you would like to help with the beer situation;....bring a sixer (or suitcase or case)..and we will put it in the kitty pools and chill it down......any beer contributions means more money raised for Tom and less spent from the fundraiser funds for beer. We will drink a lot of beer......I'm thinking about X5 what you seen here;....anyways.......The main thing to focus on is;...... WE MUST NOT RUN OUT OF BEER.

I'm not trying to divert attention from the noble event, but reminding all that perhaps we as climbers have shirked our duties over the decades, by generally deigning to subscribe to mundane things like major medical insurance. As young indigent types with no responsibilities we could get away with it, but over and over again even the best have no final control over the way fate rolls the dice.
If 500 people donate $100 each, that seems like a grand $50,000; I have a friend who fell off a homemade zipline, and the 'ER copter bill just to the door of the hospital was about $75k. Emergency medical bills can be astronomical, as can the long-term care. Even with insurance the misc. costs not covered can add up. Perhaps that was the case with Tom, and godspeed to the efforts of all in this thread, on his behalf. My own rates run about 7500/yr with a big deductible, which could finance a lot of road trips, but the financial hit to family from one accident would be devastating without the coverage. For all those still out there rolling the dice, perhaps these stories should come as a reminder, it may be time to grow up.

Your advice rings true, SammyO........
Medical insurance, especially if you have a family;..is pretty big deal and pretty important;....especially for us "dare devil" rock climbers, mountain bikers, and thrill seekers. (Isn't Obama helping us out with this?......)...
In Tom's Case, his medical bills and continued care are in the hands of the state (I believe);....his medical bills from the accident were covered and is water off a duck's back;....and his continued care is covered (I am guessing), by the state of Utah.
That said, ....yeah;...his care-givers salary and his therapy/medical needs are taken care of, and I'm sure he has allowances for food, housing, etc.
Now for the good part.
Before this fundraiser, Tom had about $200 (it's no shame to be poor;....most all of us have been there at one time or another in our lives!) We are having this fundraiser, not to cover his medical bills, or his food/housing...but for other reasons

1) To show we love Tom and care about him (most important reason!)
2) To gather together as a community of caring humans for a fanastic reason (basically a wonderful reason to get together to drink beer, climb, and talk sheit)
3. To help Tom with his quality of life and daily struggles that come with having no source of income
4. Tom is moving from a re-hab medical facility (where he has lived for the last 4 years)..and moving into a private home (trailer) in Moab, Utah.....he will need some cash to get this new life and new living situation together
5. I think Tom wants to get a new wheel chair and maybe a beater vehicle to get around in locally and maybe travel some.
6. We wanted to raise money for all the other cool things Tom likes to spend his money on, but he doesn't have much extra cash after the bills are paid;...stuff like booze, pot, hookers, bongs, porn, velvet paintings, unicorn figurines, weapons, ammo,
pokeman cards, diet sodas, tater tots, yohoo chocolate drinks, smokes, red bull, rap music CDs, tooth brushes, xmas presents for his family, beef jerky, skoal bandits, Mayweather/Paciao fight in June,......important stuff like that....

I probably should have explained Tom's situation a bit earlier...and I'm not sure I have it all correct anyways.........
Bottom line, ...we love Tom, he needs a helping hand, we all love to help our friends, and we love beer, bolts, and babes....

Quick story about medical insurance.....When I was about 25 years old;..I had to decide if I needed medical insurance or a porti-ledge;.....I bought the ledge;.......a few months later, I fell on a climb at joshua tree and I thought I broke my leg. I asked my dad (who is an awesome DAD and totally kind person)..if I could borrow some $ for a doctor's visit.....he reminded me of my "decision" to buy the ledge instead of take his advice and get medical insurance.......My father was the smart/correct one that time (and most of the time actually). So;....don't buy a porti-ledge instead of medical insurance.......Lesson learned.

Cole Gibson (pictured above)...came over on his motorcycle today to drop off two copies of his super cool DVD on climbing at SToney Point.......
Now I'm not much of a boulderer....in fact;..I'm not into bouldering (pebble wrestling or climbing very small rocks ) at all........but I loved this DVD...Cole is one talented cinematorgrapher.......

...my "back it the day" ....climbing days...early 90's, is still to this day....
...sharinig my favorite stories... And one of my favorites was pulling up to Giant Rock on my old Husky 400 WR, and watching you, Mo, Mari cranking out the most amazing overhang sh#t I ever saw. You guys were so awe inspiring to me. It was a pleasure to have gotten to know you back then. Good times for sure! You guys inspired me to put up those routes around the corner now known as the DMZ. I learned some wild climbing technics from you guys that I use to this day. Busting out certain moves always brings back vivid memories that I am proud to have.

Yes, It was by far the best ever! Really missed all of you that couldn't be there. Weather perfect, no wind and awesome fun. As Todd would say, "lots of beer, boys and bolts." I mean "babes and bolts". :) Plenty of both. Good time had by all.

Thank you , all , who attended , supported, and helped out with the Tom Gilje Fundraiser....

I didn't take too many pics because it was a busy evening for me attending to the details of the fundraiser.....(it was a great and fun evening for me;...but busy....)....
Our goal was to raise $10,000 for Tom...and we reached our goal...and beyond!!!!
We took in about $18,000,...and after the costs of the fundraiser, Tom recieved about $15,000!!!!.......
It was great to see Tom for those of us who are his "old" friends.....and for those who didn't know Tom from before...hope you got to meet him!..and his family and friends...
I am really happy about this, and proud to be a part of this. I like to set goals and reach them....so I am psyched about this;....
To reach our goal, it took alot of "coming together" of the community;...so I commend and thank each and everyone of you that contributed.
All the people that donated stuff;.....a big giant thank you!...Those of you who bought stuff at the fundraiser;..thank you thank you thank you!..(there was some screaming deals going down too!).

The music was awesome, the food seems to work (you guys ate about $650 in pizzas quickly!)....and there was enough beer to last the evening....(I think there was about 8 beers left the next AM...so great planning!). Dave Katz did an awesome job with the tequilla bar (which was a big hit last nite and a few headaches this AM...)......which was all funded by Dave himself;.......so big thank you so much.
The epperson slide presentation was mega-awesome and a huge hit;.......i loved it....it was a highlite of the evening.
The music was top shelf;...Ernseto started things off playing for the Locals and early birds;...that was fantastic!..
Kelly Corbin and friends played some wonderful and outrageously super-fantastic jazz for the "dinner set".......which was so very very cool.
And Machin topped it off with the evening set;..which was full on jamming....thanks to all the musicians who helped make the event so fun and successful and .....believe it or not;...classy.......(and it's not easy to make us look too classy;...but they did bring the street cred for sure!)
Thanks to my awesome and cool and loving family for helping out so much and being a big part of this from day one.......Andrea, Beck, Von , and Lake.

Big thank you to the "prep" crew for 2 days of cleaning up my yard and house......(I can't do it myself...it's not in my DNA..)
Way cool to see everyone and see Tom and his family.
To all the people who worked hard and i forgot to say a personal thank you;..you know how much I appreciate all that eveyone did and does.
The So. Cal. climbing community is really fantastic and kind and caring and way way willing to help out, get together and party, and work together to accomplish and "pull off" such a way cool event.
Susan Peplow stepped up again, as usual...and made it happen and worked very hard to help make the event a HUGE successful, fun, worthy and worthwhile event..
A big thanks to those whole drove far to attend, flew in to attend, and even those who rode their bikes or walked to attend this event.....(driving from montana, colorado,...stuff like that...)..and flying in from all over the place.........pretty amazing.....
Hope you all had a fun time.....I had a blast!....
Horray for Tom Gilje and Horray for all of us;...who care about Tom, ourselves, and each other. Lots of love to share and go around for all!

The big heart award goes out to Todd and Andrea (and numerous other) for the amazing party and fundraiser.

Saturday night encompassed fantastic socializing (and reconnections), inspirational stories, the world's best climbing photographer and his slideshow, and above all seeing and hearing Tom Gilje express his appreciation and moe.

I am moved and elevated.

You all are my heroes and the greatest friend network ever!

That was just the Best trip report, and a big smile comes your way from down here on the Divide. I'll be up in Fairbanks later this year, don't know if I'll get to Anchorage. But it has been a great bit of vicarious travel to read this trip report, thinking about the Alaska roads, the warm rock and the beautiful gathering of friends.

You know we are all sending good thoughts for your sister's fiance. I hope everything turns out the best possible way for him. There are brain-controlled prosthetics now.

What a perfect way to spend a week. Truly great! You guys are magnificent and beautifully awesome spirits! Bravo! and Brava! Can't say enough good things. You make Alaska proud. :)

I am just getting back from a wonderful road trip inspired by the fundraiser. What an awesome gathering. Thank you Todd and family for sponsoring the event, everyone who came by to make it happen and all those folks who supported it with donations.

I walked away with some really great items:
old gear including and old wooden handled axe; thanks Craig ;-}, a painting by Neebee, and a print from Phyl, ropes, books, etc. Well worth the money I spent and it went to a great cause.

I even got some climbing in. Sunday, I tried to hook up with Vegas Climber and Robert Fonda but ended up hanging out and climbing with the Alaskans. Great folk. I camped in the park with John and gang, climbed with the Montana folk, Todd and friends. Thanks Todd for letting me tag along. Went to a turquoise mine and hiked around Queen mountain before driving through and camping in the Carrizo Plain. And finished off camping and climbing at Pinnacles with friends from the AAC and Mud and Crud gang.

We have an awesome community. I am glad to know so many cool folks and get to meet new ones all the time. Looking forward to getting out there and doing it again. Thanks to everyone who share time and the rope with me. It was a great trip.

hey there say, to H... wow, so very glad your roadtrip home, was safe and sound!! the best things of all, for a trip, being home and so very thankful for the treasured time and memories...

(i know, since i had a memorial trip to see my mom and family, a bit agoa)...

happy smile, too:
i was hoping that my paintings got a home... NOW, i know they did... i was not able to make climbing, art, at that time, as, i had the horse and osprey already sketched, and wow, these things take time, and thus--taadaaa... it was critter art, this time) :))

after all, climbers love critters and respect the land that they come from, :)

Geez Dave! Those are some of the best portrait photos I have ever seen. And let me tell you folks, Brass Nuts was the man, when we were out on the rock. That guy is so solid and cool. He lead this one heinous friction pitch right off the deck that had a million biting red ants out of the horizontal. They stung the sh#t out of him as he had neither foot nor hand holds for about, oh 20 moves or so. Not once did he weight the rope.

Anyway, the one of Locker and Craig Fry is priceless, Ron Gomez-classic, same for the Fish foto and Gordon with the stubble is the one his great grandkids will marvel at.
