Warbler outraged:
The FFA of the Dawn Wall and that's it?? Arguably the most significant free climb in the world, certainly in America, with tons of super exposed high level climbing, photographers everywhere, and the world's most respected newspaper can't do better than that?
yet when I think of exposure in images, it turns out to be tricky to capture the feeling, to create a composition which reveals the exposure... and the revelation has to be accessible to people who haven't experienced it climbing.
So let's have your best!
I'll start, with every expectation of providing only a weak attempts.

^^^not much different than what the NYTimes showed, an image of the WOEML and a scale "human" height, which looked not quite the size of a comma...
but that doesn't convey the sense of exposure that a climber feels, and that is the task.
There are a lot of images of climbing, some quite good ones, by people who post to STForum...
who's best conveys that feeling?

until "paper" video displays exist and are cheap enough to incorporate into my morning NYTimes read, video isn't an option...
the art of photography is to capture the feeling in a 2D, static image...
this isn't an easy assignment.

When trying to show exposure in photos I like to have minimal shrubbery, climber close to camera, and a crack or line that plunges down and away. Especially if I dont have an SLR with a shallow depth of field to give that "out there" vibe.
My friends who are non climbers seem to like this shot of me on CPofF.

I'm also unashamedly a master of the camera-tilt.
This is 5.4 slab at Tollhouse Rock.....but it got 134 likes on Facebook and actually looks pretty cool if you ask me. I frame up slab shots at 90degrees and I leave out the horizon knowing I'll tilt them.
Shameless, I know, but the masses eat it up.

Ok. Last one......nice topic Ed.
I love ridges. But when trying to convince the eyeball of exposure I do one of two things....
1. Small climber, bright jacket, big tall wall behind him
2. Climber three feet from camera, hands visible, feet visible (this is actually very important I have found and I often wait for it or make my poor partner slow down even if he's cruxing) ridge arcing away in distance.

Nice exposure photo shares everyone! What a good idea for a thread.
Thank you Ed!
Let me make a little contribution from my small but growing collection of climbing photos. While not close to a metric ton of exposure this shot is pretty good for Iowa in the springtime.
I waited and waited for the chance to take this photo of my friend, Dan. He is a good climber and this route is well within his ability, but you can see some emotion in the eyes as he goes for the clip.
In sum, I'm learning a face, eyes, hands, and a view of the consequences of failure can deliver an exciting picture.
Good color, and lighting are also important, and on this spring day the foliage plus the randomness of Dan's new rope, it's color and contrasting color of his shirt seem to make for an exciting image. Still, not quite a ton of exposure but enough to qualify I hope.

ß Î Ø T Ç H - exactly how I read it first time through, as a bit of rhetoric, but then I thought a bit more about the question: how would I compose an image that conveyed to the audience of the NYTimes that sense of exposure?
It's actually a very old challenge, the exhibition of paintings American Sublime; Landscape Painting in the United States 1820-1880 that toured in 2002, the catalog for that exhibition had to define "sublime" and it is a definition that climbers would know, quoting from Burke's Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of our Ideas of the Sublime and Beauty:
"Whatever it is fitted in any sort to excite the ideas of pain and danger, that is to say, whatever it is in any sort terrible, or is conversant with terrible objects, or operates in a manner analogous to terror, is a source of the sublime; that is, it is productive of the strongest emotion which the mind is capable of feeling"
And it was the aim of those 19th century landscape painters to convey the sense of the sublime in their depictions of nature through landscapes.
In many ways climbing is still a 19th century affectation... though the current goings on in The Valley may be distinctly modern. So it is befitting that Warbler would insist, rightfully so, that the readers of the NYTimes be treated to depictions that capture that sense of sublime.
My first sense of that feeling was standing on the N. Ridge of Lone Pine looking out into the Owens Valley, the senses all confused by the airy vastness of the space and the solidity of the purchase, and the improbability of the setting.
How to capture that feeling in an image is what this thread is all about, thanks to Warbler for being rhetorical, we can riff off his complaint and try to make some art.

I think Michael Hjorth comes closest so far... it would have been even closer had it been shot with a lens with about half the focal length, the wider field of view would have included more of the "edge" and the Valley floor...
also "tipping" the image would provide more of a sense of the "terror" for the viewer

You like picking challenging tasks Ed. I lean towards what Werner said. When you are out climbing you have a chance to experience sublime. What you see on these threads, or in newspapers is just an image. I can look at all these all day but unless it is an image that reminds me of an experience, there will be nothing sublime about it, empty exposure. It is relative though. Some people get pleasure from going to galleries and looking at photos etc. People are different.

What does it take? To capture more than the climber audience it needs to be just the right juxtaposition of things.
If it looks too "easy" no matter if it is thousands of feet of hard ass climbing even a non climber will be nonplussed. What's needed is a combo of really hands on scary that the ordinary person can some what relate to taken in a position that pulls the viewing audience into the climb itself. Like the opening scene in Cliffhanger.
Totally separate from these comments, the following picture.
Not the greatest photo. My feeling is it's super difficult for even the best photographer to capture air exposure that transcends to the true feeling of what is happening.

A certain well-trod stairway to the higher realms, an adventure pathway so alluring, so addicting, that it's humble setting belies its ability to kill you if you are careless or off-route.
Join us in yet another excursion into a place where most of us have gone when we were n00bish, and come back in slack-jawed awe after our first journey, and to which we return each time we tie in.
Many reach this spot, only to turn around and go back down, back the way they came.
You, my friend, and I, your friend, have entered The Sunnyside Zone.
Please tie in for form's sake.
On belay.
