Skiers are a strange bunch. My boots suck, my Skies suck, the snow is heavy, wind packed and kind of sucks. My legs are weak from yesterdays 800ft of ice soloing and climbing a mountain. It took me 1.5 hours to skin up and my legs are weak from that. I am in absolute survival mode skiing down. Isa would have laughed herself silly at my antics to stay upright and these folks skinning up are Hooting at me like I am having the run of the century.. Likely just trying to convince themselves that all the effort of skinning up is going to yield them an epic run......

Wait just a minute! An ice climber calling skiers a strange bunch??

Find a spot where the sun doesn’t ever shine on the coldest day of the year. Put on a bunch of pointy things, climb up, get the screaming barfies, get squirted with water and ice chunks, cut your nose so it drips all over your $400 jacket, soak your gloves, screaming barfies again, fuk! Then end your pitch and shiver while your partner pummels you with ice blocks. Yeah skiers are pretty weird, riiiight.

I have to admit ice climbing is fun. But skiing...when it’s good.it’s as good as sex.

Nice one Norm :) there must be something to that ice climbing thing because somehow I have talked Isa into ice climbing on quite a few powder days . Do you know our friend Steve Glen from Dubois? back country skier and climber.

When I was young I used to ice climb on powder days. All my friends thought I was dumb. Now that I’m older I see that I was dumb.
Tradman, don’t know your friend.

Norm,do you ever run into a man named Fred Foster,he lives in Driggs?

He is from Saranac Lake , I skied with him a bit over here, I know he’s been skiing around the BC over there for awhile now.

Great skier ,showed me around the Dacks and completely humiliated me ,skiing with him.

Have skis will (be) travel(ing)

The quiver:

Resort/powder - BD Boundry Pro
Resort/all mountain - Volkl Mantra
Backcountry - BD Helio 105
XC skis - Fischer Touring Crowns

The context

Having been worked like a “rented mule” for 47 years, 37 of which in my own business in the design/construction industry I finally pulled the plug. I’m heading out this Wednesday on a Intermountain West and British Columbia ski road trip with no end date.

The plan

I’ll be traveling to the Teton’s and skiing there with old and new friends before heading North to Bozeman and Cooke City doing pretty much the same thing along with family thrown in. I’ll be then heading to Missoula to ski for a few full credit days with my buddy, you may recognize his rig:
.

I’ll leave Missoula and will head North to White Fish and then on up into Canada. I plan on hitting the resorts and side country of Nelson, Rossland, Revelstoke, Kicking Horse and of course the backcountry of the one and only Rogers Pass:

The deal

We can all appreciate particularly as back country skiers local knowledge and expertise helps keep one out of trouble, unlike my first trip to Rogers where we found ourselves in a loaded gun barrel:

Beyond Missoula I’ll be on my own for the most part until I arrive at Rogers Pass where I’ve got a buddy and guide to show me the goods. So the environs around White Fish, Nelson, Rossland and Revelstoke I could use some beta or perhaps a willing local. I’m not a blogger just “a skier that climbs” as opposed to a climber that skis.....I respect this ethic:

Anyway beta for the places I mentioned is appreciated. If you see me on the road say hello and if you bust a skin track for an old man it’s an open bar tab at the watering hole of your choice:

Charlie D.

Charlie,

Enjoy the well-earned, dream trip!

Having an excellent season here in Colorado. We'll leave the light on for you if you can detour a bit this way.

For those he might meet up with on the road, I've had the pleasure of sliding on snow with Charlie and can tell you that he's a charger.

For Nelson and RossVegas, talk to Mark @ the Sacred Ride in Nelson. He is a keener and his knowledge and energy is second to none! Typical awesome and nice Cannuck that is a damn fine skier and bike rider and trail devo'r.
