I just saw Fred Beckey at dinner last night as he finished a trip to Toulumne, The Needles, and Canon Tajo, Baja. He was leading 5.8 at Canon Tajo (at age 82!!!) and seems to have made no concessions to life for his age. I suspect if someone told him "You're gonna Die" his answer would be "The Hell I Am!!" He may be right. Never quit, Fred.............

re: "way homo" IIRC there used to be some dude who hung in the Valley who'd pejoratively refer to everything as "way homo"...the name stuck to him, and it then presumably entered Valley lingo...

For me it was on Ham Sandwich at The Leap. After my buddy yelled down (from a VERY sketchy lead) “Climb on, don’t fall,” my inner child said to my feeling,”that means the belay is about as good as it is going to get.”

Then my feeling yelled “it,” at my inner child (they don’t get along too well).

Hey everyone be sure to be at the Halloween Party!!!

You really need Kris Solem to tell it because I wasn't there but....

Too Strong used to tell Suzuki that slab routes were 'way homo' but didn't tell him what homo meant. Suzuki took the phrase to mean that it was a really good route. One day Suzuki is on Kalishnikov Kulture in Indian Cover (very hard, thin 12 face) and after lots of pulling and trial and error Suzuki finally pulls the moves. There is a large crowd watching and he turns around and yells 'Way Homo Route!!!!' and pumps his fist in the air.

That is a classic story about Hidetaka.

One of my funniest times in the Valley was making a point to ride down to the meadow around bivy time to yell various versions of "Way Homo" at the Captain and hearing it yelled back. I recall Schneider being one to really enjoy that yell but soon enough most everyone was shouting it when the timing was right. It was hilarious counting on your friends to keep an eye on you while you were off the deck.

Bears Are Gonna Die!!

I was sleeping in the hearse,
Late one Friday night.
I was woken up by bears--
I had an awful fright!

I rolled a window down--
One looked me in the eye:
"Go back to sleep, my brother.
We're just trying to get high."

Out came my Ruger shotgun
And I pointed it at him.
"Just keep yur grubby paws and tongue
Away from my Slim Jim."

"Now back away real slowly
And git gone away from here.
And tell yur ol' pal Boo-Boo
To drop my only beer!"

They ran off for the bushes
On the ol' Tuolumne
And that's the truth, I swear to you,
And really pleases me!!

One thing everyone here seems to agree on, at least.

The proposition that we are all gonna die.
