Greetings Supertopians! Our names are Joe and Heidi and in a couple of months we will be moving to Fresno and looking forward to connecting with you!

We have 3 little kids and love spending time with them on adventures. For us, climbing has always been about relationships….ours as a couple….the relationship we have with our kids….and the many friends we've made and met over many years of climbing.

We love camping…and have always camped with our kids since their very first days! It kinda reminds me of an old proverb that says, "Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it." I suppose we've taken that to heart.

We also love traveling with our kids. Road-trips across north america or to places around the world have taught us a lot as a family.

^^ Here we are at an orphanage in the Dominican Republic. Our newest son, Noah, was a few months old.

We love all types of climbing.

Multi-pitch trad is our favourite type of adventure. Our favourite place to spend time is Squamish (our local spot) but Red Rocks and Tuolumne Meadows are particularly special places of ours.

We love alpine climbing….rock

or ice (mostly Joe).

In the winters we are avid skiers and Joe especially with regard to backcountry skiing. He loves the way it's slow enough to talk with his partners on the skin up, adventurous enough to keep him interested, and fast enough on the way down to have some fun!

We also love to spend time as a family in beautiful places. Having lived in British Columbia for almost the last 10 years, we have spent time in some incredible places!

We also love just going to the crag, kids in tow, friends, some climbers some not, and just setting up top ropes for people! It doesn't always need to me a summit for us.

In a couple months we are moving to Fresno and looking forward to spending more time in Yosemite and Sequoia and heading to the California Coast for some fresh breeze. Those of you in the Central Valley are close to everything we love!

Anyway, not sure if anyone is really going to read all this…..but just wanted to introduce ourselves and say we'd love to connect with some of you in the Fresno and surrounding area come January!

Peace,
Joe and Heidi

Welcome! You look like a really nice family.

I grew up in Fresno. You are right about it being the total hub of California, very centrally located. I've seen it grow from the time I was in grade school from 45,000 to at least 10 times that. Did anyone tell you that it is the asthma capitol of the USA? This place will shorten your life by years. The city's answer to air pollution is to build another freeway. I hate to be so negative, but you need to know this. You won't be giving up good Canadian health care will you?

Again, you are welcome, but I would think twice about this. All the Best..........

WhiteMeat - Thank you! I appreciate the invitation. I've actually visited Bishop Peak in 2010 on a climbing trip through California.

I actually wrote a little blog about it here: http://www.joeandheidiwhite.com/2010/03/rockclimbing-biship-peak.html

Hey. Welcome Home to California!

That was an introduction.

What do you guys like on the Central Coast?

If you ever find yourselves south of Big Sur, consider taking the kids to see the elephant seals, about ten minutes north of the town of San Simeon.

Chaz - Thanks, Mate! We LOVE the central coast. Does it get any better?….maybe….but maybe not!

We have spent loads of time in San Simeon, actually. It's one of our favourite places to visit each year.

We actually "developed" a little bouldering spot near there…that we affectionately called "honeycomb rock" because of how interesting the features were.

How many minutes/hours is it from Fresno to Shuteye or Fresno Dome? Also, are these places climbable all year?

Glad you had fun there Jim!

A lot of shuteye is pretty high, so they get snow up on the ridge, but a lot of locals will snowmobile to go climb when it's nice out. I was there in late may this year, and we went to some of the higher areas, but it was a low snowpack year.

Yes, Graham's book is the best guide for the area at the moment. Quite well put together too i might add.

Direction to Fresno Dome: Drive approx. 3 miles north outside of the town of Oakhurst on Hwy 41. Turn right onto Sky Ranch Rd and head east. Continue to stay on Sky Ranch Rd for approximately 15 miles. Several signs along the road will point the way as the asphalt road gives way to dirt. Don't be discouraged when you see a few signs indicate that Fresno Dome is "5 miles"......for the 4th time!! Stay on the dirt road until a stone marque appears on the right side of the road for FRESNO DOME. Either park here or park along side the road an 1/8 of a mile back. There is a path from the sign and leads up to Fresno Dome. The parking area back 1/8 mile requires a hike down to a small creek and back up the other side to a faint trail which follows the creek down for approximately 50 yards. Turn left and up hill. A climbers trail continues up and eventually joins the other trail at a saddle. Drop down the opposite side and follow the trail down to the base of the dome. This is the southern side of Wamello. Most of the routes start on this side.

Shuteye is also, of course, amazing. You are so lucky!

Joe an Heidi,

Leave Supertopo now while you can. Take your cute little kids and your powder blue matching helmets and stay up north. There is nothing on this site but a bunch of old men bickering about politics and bolt wars from the 1970's.

Actually.....now that I think about it, there are a few reasons to stay; let me see...

1. My Trip Reports. Pretty much the finest writing you'll find on the internet. Think Tolstoy meets Hemingway meets Mary Poppins. Just go to the Trip Reports section, type in my name, steep a mug of Earl Grey and enjoy.

2. John Long, Werner Braun and other masters reside here. They are mythical creatures of Yosemite yesteryear who hold the keys to the intellectual and spiritual realm of the interwebs. How often do you get to hang out with your heroes?

3. Supertopo is a direct link to the weirdness and uniqueness and community of the tribe we call climbers. I've met many of these folks in person and have forged some lasting friendships through this site.

4. Beta. I am a beta hound and the route/range/wall beta here flows like honey whence you seek it.

5. Stay away from the political and religious threads. They hold nothing but slander, malice and wasted energy.

6. Trip Reports in general. You are full of stoke and are a fantastic writer.....so sit down and post up a Trip Report man, it'll make you famous around here like me.

6b. Norwegian. The finest poet online and the lyrical bard of supertopo. His way with prose is magical and worth hanging out here alone.

7. That's all I got. I'm stoked you are coming to Fresno! Call me when yall land and we'll bring you out for dinner. We got chickens and goats for the kids to play with and we can plan an adventure.

So welcome to Supertaco, the strangest and coolest campfire you'll ever hang out around. You'll fit right right in.

Scott

Early welcome to the great San Joaquin Valley! People who say you're crazy are just jealous because it takes them 2-5 hours to get here on the way to go climbing and we can go the The Valley for the afternoon.

The air is better than it's been in 50 years. But ya, it's not great, unless you drive 30 min east into one of the best mountain ranges on Earth!

Also, kind of a big area but the climbing community is small and friendly so it won't take long to meet a few people, especially if you take micronut's invite to the early morning metalmark sessions.

The main bummer is that if you only have an hour or so free there's not a lot. But with a day or even half a day you can enjoy
-Climbing (duh)
-Fishing
-Whitewater
-Snowmobiling
-Backcountry skiing (splitboard in my case)
-Mountain Biking
-Golf
-Disc Golf
-Hiking
-Caving
-Dirtbiking
-Boating
-Hunting
-Cow tipping

Welcome to the Fresno area. Ignore some of the negativity here as this is a great area. Metalmark is the excellent climbing gym here. Fresno is very near the geographical center of California, so there is tons of climbing within a few hours drive. While you can go pull a number to do a classic in Yosemite and the Meadows, you can go up to Courtright or The Balls and do the same without ever having to wait in line. Bishop's Peak in SLO is within a weekend's trip as well many other areas. Then you have the Needles and Dome Rock plus Domelands, the last where you will never see another climber. We even have ice climbing if the conditions are right (if this drought continues, maybe not this year). If you ever want me to show you around or give you some suggestions on good places to climb, let me know.

Warm welcome to California.

Sometimes when I drive through Fresno, going to and from, I think to myself.
"this would be a nice place to live....."

hope to see you around.

Welcome Sea to Sky, both to ST and to Fresno. So much good climbing in your reach.

I have the book...it's excellent. Literally left there two hours ago and am in a motel in Fresno freshining up before heading to Red Rocks.
We climbed at Crocodile Rock today....some of the most beautiful rock I have ever experienced
Way cool to hear Jim, especially all the rocks you have seen. Cool getting a phone call from you too, next June I'd like to meet up and climb something.

Welcome to the Taco Stand, from a Californian living in Ireland for years.

It can get rowdy around here. Just do not click on the threads that have no relevance to your lives, otherwise there is a lot of good stuff.

Hopefully we bump into each other up in the mountains sometime!
