To my understanding it depends upon the type of climbing that you intend to do...

If you want to boulder, you will be better off with a stylin mustache. If you want to sport climb you shave yourself clean. If you are intending to do traditionAl climbing then you want to grow a stubble/unshAven look. If you are planning on venturing into the alpine, a full beard is best.

Zbrown. Bachar did a shaving commercial for one of the razor companies. I saw it on TV a few times around 30 years ago.
