Congratulations on reaching this life decision together, hope everything works out wonderfully for you! I got nothin' but a thread bump in terms of practical advice on living there with a family.

Rent a driveway in el portal or Yosemite west. Drive the rv into the valley to stay legal and dump the tanks once a week or so.

Spending a year in/near Yosemite could be fun,
but I wouldn't make that choice based primarily on the reactions
of a two-year-old.
Many kids enjoy meadows, streams, lakes.
But those can be found elsewhere, too.
Maybe just by moving to a nicer part of San Diego and getting out to parks more often?
There will be long winter nights, snow, rain, etc. and if the kid is in a bad mood in a small RV it might not be fun.
So a shorter term plan, or exit option in November might be good.

Thanks for the concern Clint however, we are already 100% committed. Giving up our lifestyle for a year for our son is worth it. Money, homes, etc can be replaced...time cannot.
I appreciate the information the fret! Looking into it now :)

Just curious as to what your job is ? NPS? Working concessions in the park?
Best of luck you , why not give it a shot before the kid gets all locked into a school , friends , community .
Also , you should have somehow secretly recorded that conversation between you and your wife ... Just in case.

We have an RV and are looking for suggestions or options where we can park the RV and live for a year.

haha absolutely should have, Thanks Dan! I will be working a cashier position for now till something opens up in management.
I should have stated we intent to pay for wherever we stay and park our RV.

Right on. I wouldn't tell another what to do generally, we all make our own calls. I gave up work for just under 2 years to be with my kids (22 years ago or so) and it was the best damn thing I've ever done. You have plenty of years left to have the money roll in. I will say though, my wife and I made that decision as she had a good job and I was between selling a business and getting out of that field and growing up or taking break or whatever - I didn't know then and don't know now.
Day care is costly, so why not just do it ourselves. I went back at it later when my eldest started school and the lil one had a good space to be in. Damn. Good. Times. I had prioritized my life and kids and health were tied for #1 position... The lil one started following me around like a dog, and that bond is still there many years later even though he has since grown up and moved on out. He's a better man than me, and I'm happy for it. Seeing a Todd Gordon "lil kids sucking on a whipped cream can and running loose like heathens thread" can still take me back to those happy times. Thanks Todd!
You might post regularly here and connect with folks for haircuts to help pay the bills.

I'd say keep it mobile and relocate every month or so. There are campgrounds up in Tuolomne for RVs. Can't you rent upper/lower pines for a month at a time?
Like many people, I work on a computer all the time, and just dream of the day when I can live and work anywhere I want. I would set up shop in either Yosemite or Katmandu/Srinagar.

I jumped out of post-secondary management to spend summers with my kids at our place in the mountains. Definitely worth it.
Big blocks of un-interrupted time with kids makes such a difference. My only wish is that my wife either wasn't stuck working in the city or she didn't mind more overnight get-aways by me and the kids.

I'd look outside the park. Oakhurst would have many more job opportunities, it's close to the park, and there are plenty of other spots that are just as good as Yosemite with way less people. I am forever grateful for being raised and still living in the Sierra.

one of the biggest problems with the park is finding housing. I don't have any suggestions for you, except push for a management position that comes with family housing. Thats not easy to get either as there isn't much. I do love Yosemite . I loved living there, but to find housing you generally need to know someone. For the valley the closest place is El Portal. Its tiny and there isn't much, but it can be possible. Otherwise you have to look at Mariposa or mid pines, which is an hours drive away from the valley. Wawona is also nice and after 4 months you can transfer there, though there isn't much housing available for families. I had one of the 4 monthly rentals available that I was aware of and it is being torn down. So my time in Wawona has come to an end. If you do end up working in Wawona, then Fish camp is 6 miles away and Oakhurst is 22 miles.

Your wife should get a job too so you guys can nail down private housing together. The RV thing is a total red flag for the man, unless you want to commute from Maripoasa.
