Jim, how was the trip? Where did you go this time? Nice pics AKDOG. We met a teacher from Anchorage climbing with his son on Wolfs Head.

Yes, llama can traverse Jackass Pass yet it is no piece of cam. I've done it twice and both times had to off loaded the llamas (so they could jump from ledge to ledge without packs) which meant humans carried the loads to traverse a shorty nasty section around Arrowhead Lake (name of lake may be wrong as I am working from memory). Other llama packers have told me they found a route which is not so close to the lake shore and report they didn't have to offload. In short, I don't recommend it for novice llama packers who might lease llamas and be on their first llama outing. If dead set on reaching the Cirque of the Towers, I think Dickinson Park is the saner though longer approach. The situation viz: having to pay the Wind River Indian tribe a fee simply to drive to Dickinson Park may be fluid; I've never paid such a fee nor been confronted by anyone in authority suggesting it is required.

Jim Donini, I'd really hate to see pack horses carrying loads above Lonesome Lake. We came in and out over Jackass Pass. But, on a rainy day, we hiked down below Lonesome Lake on the official trail on an unsuccessful moose "hunt". The trail down there is a serious mess from all the horse traffic. On the other hand, the meadows above Lonesome Lake thankfully seem absent of such horse tell tales.
I'll add too that we were at the Cirque of the Towers during prime mosquito season (late July, 2014). The wild flowers were in full riot; if they are not so fresh later in the climbing season, I'd say the flowers are well worth enduring any mosquitos ... but bring those head nets and gloves to protect the back of the hands when needed. :-)
