Hmmm,
Cud be a loaded question.
I'd say because they were: sisters, indians, and sometimes on the hunt for men.
They also displayed volatile responses on occasion; well Virginia for sure.

The beauty of nick names is you don't get to pick your own. You think "Industrial Sue" or the "Gash Sisters" had any choice in their monikers???

Last guy that begged for a nickname became "the resevoir tip" Flattering, yes.....? Eventually he was just called "tip" which ain't so bad.

I just reviewed that Can't Say link way upthread.
Pretty comprehensive, but, luckily for most, no etymology.

Somewhere in the ST newspaper pile there's another pretty good run down which Russ furnished; a thread based on sub men and not so much nicknames per se, which goes some distance to imply relationship amongst us characters.

World Famous Sub men:

Locker edit:

Here is a partial list from that thread:

Here is a slanerous blast from the past. Slightly trimmed to exclude all the refs to tampons and the like and numerous tales of the beast with two backs in Camp 4. Sewellymon seemed to be the curator:

Famous Sub-Men through the Ages
Author Subject: Famous Sub-Men through the Ages
Spew Spewellymon wrote on the JT Forum a while back:

So I was chatting up Naygro about this (since he was accused of being Moes
boot licker), and we started talking about Famous Sub-Men through the Ages.
Now, I've done all manner of excellent trad free climbs (Oz to Gram Traverse, Don Juan, Mr. Kamps, etc etc), and most every one of them was quaking in my boots while belaying Buttchuckleman, so I guess that makes me Boogs sub-man.

Like "The animal nickname guy (Scotch/Galifraen?)" said, you don't get to pick 'em youself.

I didn't "snag" ow-machine, it snagged me; via the Walt-Fish-Watusi tri-lateral, as close as I can tell.

"Jaybro" seems to have come from the Colonel.

eeyo..formarly Grug, maybe if you'd said "Buck Nekkid."
