Well Bad C. it was worth a discussion. Sorry it didn't work out. I get where your wife is coming from having gone through the same gamut of emotions (I'm Mr E's wife)
Our plans are set now. As of August, we will be Bishop denizens.
I've lived in the LA area my whole life and in the same house for 15 years with a great job, so deciding to move was a tough decision. It came down to being willing to just take a chance and realizing it's not the end of the friggin' world if it doesn't work out.
People always ask "Why are you moving" (in a shocked and appalled tone). Answer: My husband was coming home physically and emotionally destroyed every day from his shitty Reseda maintenance job. My dad lives in Mammoth and is getting older and having health problems. My personal health improves any time I get out of LA. We just want to climb all the time and So Cal choss gets old after a decade. Bishop is still close enough to LA for me to get supplies for my business, so why not give it a shot?.
It has been a huge process. I'm not afraid of moving to a small town, I know I'll do fine in a quieter environment. I am, intimidated by the logistics of moving. I've been culling 15 years worth of possessions down for the past year. Moving my stained glass studio is no small feat. Coming to grips with turning my beautiful house over to a renter (who probably will destroy it) has been stressful. I've met with a lot of bizarre opposition from (non-climber) friends and LA-based family being outspoken against the move, which has made the process even harder, but every time I drive into Bishop all that seems to fade away.
Bad Climber- shot us a message any time you are in town. We'd love to climb with you.

Justthemaid - I think you might find that Reno is closer & maybe has everything you need. & after doing the drive to L. A. it's really nice to go up to Carson City, or Reno.
Hope you two do well and thrive up here.

I've heard so many good things about the Bishop community. Yeah, everyone knows what's going on with everyone else, but posts like the above, are more the norm compared to the aggro personalities driving down the hwy in the Grey Area. Plus you get all that climbable rock, easy afternoon sessions at the boulders.

Hey, JusttheMaid and Erik:
Huge congrats on the move. I'm envious. I just saw a REALLY nice mobile for sale with killer views of Mt. Tom. Oh, well.
Be well and do your best to deal with the stress of moving. Aside from death and divorce, it's one of the biggest things we go through in life. Ugh. It feels like a kind of punishment--even if you're looking forward to the new locale.
I'll keep you guys in the Rolodex for Bishop contacts.

Oh, Mister E and the Maid--You kill me! That view! I'm stuck grading some generally heinous research essay drafts. Must. Hang. In. There. We were just up in the Alabama Hills on Friday. Superb. Kinda windy, but it was all coming from the south, so the vast majority of climbs, facing north, were nicely sheltered.
Enjoy those big fat glorious cottonwoods! Whoot!

I was curious about those steps as well, Dan - so I did some inquiring cuz I want to buy that guy a beer!
I remember when I first took the Middle Gorge trail back in '93 - it was fukking heinous!
The primary builder was "Roadie". Apparently he did the majority of the work, with another guy (Jody? Cody?). He is a trail-builder and does tree work here, and lives out of his rig.
Seriously, if anyone has his contact info, I am in for a 12-pack of his choice or an evening at The Mountain Rambler, when it opens.

Dear MrE and JustTheMaid,
Welcome.
This has certainly been an interesting and engaging thread, with lots of plot twists too.
One of the most compelling attractions, for us anyway, was Bishop looked like fertile ground, as far as children, raising a family goes.
I guess you could say that “life” was what happened between our move out here, that goal, and, well, now. But an important part of the life was keeping our daughter and our son in touch with metropolitan life – their grandparents, cousins, and extended family. To avoid the “Blue Lagoon” syndrome, since there are reality checks necessary once in a while to keep a rather idyllic childhood grounded.
And, after college and a solid 5 or 6 years working in SF and LA, our daughter was able to return Home, married to a very talented young man, to practice in her professional field.
Which is related to her father's professional field, particularly with regard to regional socioeconomics.
The two of them were able to purchase the home right next to ours, that is, the one in which she was raised along with her brother. This home was a Design/Build project delivery for her father, to keep the family's head above water during the economic contraction of the 90's. (in fact, it started as a spec, which pre-sold)
When I think of this I wonder about the hand which guides providence.
