We have a group camp reserved at City of Rocks for the nights of Monday June 23rd -Thursday June 26th, with checkout on Friday June 27th.

I had dinner with Donini & his wife Angela the night of the Outdoor Retailer Jeff Lowe award. He worked me to get off my ass and make reservations for a camp at City of Rocks, with a preference for a week earlier. I spent a while at the online reservation site, and was astounded to find that all my favorite large van-friendly campsites at COR were reserved during those dates. (Everything at Smoky Mountain was still open----but I missed camping with the rocks and the views last year.)

However! I was able to reserve the group camp out at Twin Sisters for the nights of Monday June 23 thru 26, with checkout on Friday June 27. El Donini confirmed those dates work for him, as did Ralph T.(AK Trad on ST), Brokedownclimber, and even Spider Savage thinks he can make it towards the end of the week.

We do want to invite other like-minded folks, young or old.

The Group Camp is a great private place with scenic views, a fair number of tent spots and parking spots, a toilet, and climbing right from camp. 12-30 people are allowed. Not a lot of afternoon shade, but we have a large fly we can rig.

I have been in contact with the MOUNTAIN HOLY MAN acquaintance of Donini's, & he believes he may be able to visit too (http://www.supertopo.com/climbers-forum/2309904/Donini-and-the-Mountain-Holy-Man-at-17-777Ft-in-Szechuan.

He does share my concerns about camping with a larger group. If you would like to camp, or visit at the Group Camp: we do ask attendees to leave their pets and their small children at home, both for the safety of the small children & pets, and also to maintain a harmonious environment for all attendees.

Please RSVP! (Idaho parlance for: Reserve potatoes via phoning.) Space is limited at the Group Camp.

Please confirm in private and I will keep a list of attendees that I will not make public, or if you want to be public---confirm on this site.

Namaste.

Elcapinyoazz: This is from COR website:

Plane:
The nearest air service is Burley (charter) 45 miles north, Twin Falls (85 miles NW), Salt Lake City (170 miles SE), Boise (215 miles NW), Pocatello (100 miles NE).

Brokedown Climber flew into Burley with his plane a couple years back and was able to rent a car through the airport folks. It takes a bit more than an hour to drive from Burley to COR.

Love COR. Got an Onsight of Skyline on Morning Glory Spire.
Got a one way ride out there and hitchhiked back cause I really wanted that one.
It was worth it! I'd do it again.

Rock is off the hook AWESOME!

Can't commit to the party as I have 3 big walls in Yosemite a road trip
to Red Rocks, Indian Creek, and Colorado in May.

The Adveture Queen loves COR too! It won't take much for to be convinced.
Here is a pic of the return trip after the Onsight of Skyline

There's a nice crapper at the campground along with a couple tables. No water available here, but there is a faucet at the Bath Rock parking area.

Hey Fritz, Great idea and thanks for organizing. I will probably be able to attend this year, but I will probably fly in to SLC and rent a car, then try to stay at the cabins in Almo, rather than camping at the group site. Are you (or anybody else) thinking you might be there the weekend before or after those dates as well?

WTF asks:
Why no kids Fritz?

The requirement is: If you would like to camp, or visit at the Group Camp: we do ask attendees to leave their pets and their small children at home, both for the safety of the small children & pets, and also to maintain a harmonious environment for all attendees.

My thoughts on small children are about the same as those of most whitewater rafting companies. Here's a quote from a CA-based one.

Each river has a usual minimum recommended age. During summertime flows, the minimum age is 8 years old on Class III sections of the South Fork of the American and 5 years old on the Class I-II section. A minimum age of 12 is recommended on the Middle Fork of the American and Merced, and 13 years old on the Tuolumne in summer. In the spring, trips on the Tuolumne, the recommended age is 15 years old along with our other Class IV springtime trips. All rivers may require increased minimum age requirements as the level of difficulty increases.

I consider our campsite to be a Class III location with a minimum age of 8. I would expect any participating child above 8 to be used to camping and able to fully enjoy the outdoor environment (as opposed to being bored spitless).

Worse yet! There is no internet connection at our remote site.

After responding to your earlier post today, I mentioned to a friend:

I figured I would get worked on the no pets provision at the COR-gathering, but the no-kids reaction was a slight surprise.

Oh well, if some people on ST don't hate my guts, I'm not doing my job.

We just happen to be going at the same time (my brother and his family live in Boise), I think it's totally reasonable to have a no small kids rule for this sort of event. I'm not complaining in the slightest! We'll be there Sunday through Saturday.

Also that group site is pretty dangerous for kids if they wander towards the Twin Sisters since they'd go right across the main tourist road.

Besides, with 4 small kids, any time a couple of adults get free we are going to be on the rock one way or another…headlamps if needed!

Good Morning TacoNaaaaaaaam.
I love the idea of this climber's gathering at CoR. I have it pencilled in my calendar and am tending towards inking it down. 85% sure at this time. But here is the deal. Whereas I do appreciate the NO KIDS - NO DOGS sentiment held by many Taco I am a package deal. When my kids were little they went on all our climbing trips. It wasn't necessarily easy but it was rewarding particularly considering the fine people and conscientious land stewards they have become. I didn't have the luxury to "kennel" them for other's convenience. Now it is really me and Goldie Girl and we are a team and she will be coming with me. I am sorry if anyone is offended, irritated or annoyed by my decision but it is what it is. She truly is a great soul and a marvelous crag dog and if after this trip anyone truly disagrees with me on that I will eat a bowl of her dog food. Greg Barnes rest assured that Goldie is a gentle sweetheart with children large and small. I mean, if you really want to feel secure about your little ones then Goldie is your girl. So if I get a chance to do some chitlin' sittin' for you the little ones would be well tended.

OK so to make a short story shorter here is my offer/pledge I will be responsible for Goldie, cacti and rattlers and curmudgeons et al. I will find a place to camp that will not impact the group site. So you can reassign my space to a waiting lister. I will crag with anyone who is unafraid to fall in love with a very special four pawed soul. Or I would be fine with keeping she and I away from anyone or everyone that is bothered by the idea of a dog at the crags. She won't be a bother to anyone that doesn't want her around.

If that is not sufficient assurance and if folks are still adamantly opposed to DOGS and KIDS then I will stay home and wait for the trip reports. It's no sweat off my nose either way.

lumineferusother! With Philo moving to an adjacent dog & child friendly campspot I will put you on the 30 folks max camp list.

I appreciate you dog & small child folks working through the restrictions and I am looking forward to meeting, greeting, and maybe even climbing with all of you.

I do suppose we could even arrange to exhibit some of the climbers to the small children -------if the climbers would show some restraint in that kind of situation.

Just for the record, I'm fine with Goldie and smaller children around, but this was set up as an adult gathering from the get-go. What some others here don't get, is some of the folks in this gathering have had "negative encounters" with large dogs, as well as OP squalling brats.

Fritz is to be commended for setting this up, but "you can't please everyone every time."

I'm looking forward to hanging out with lots of wonderful friends, climbers or no... Let's all just go there and have fun!

P.S. Philo is officially commended by me for his understanding of "the dog thing," as well as his outstanding offer to do some babysitting for others!

Weather in late June from looking at this site. http://www.weather.com/weather/wxclimatology/daily/US0021:13?climoMonth=6

Highs in the high 70's, lows in the low 50's for long term averages.

All time highs for those dates are in low 90's & lows in the high 30's.

Normal precip for the entire month is about 1.13" and can come as snow, light rain, or as a thunderstorm gully-washer on occasion. Rainwear is recommended, so that it won't rain.

Wayno! If you want to take over "food-planning" that would be great.

What I normally see at City of Rocks get-togethers is a lot of independent meals that are heavy on Hors d'oeuvres that usually combine for shared grazing.

In 2012 Heidi & I sponsored Tamale night for a group of about 12. That was a hit and we have plans to repeat that for the group camp attendees. With the fairly high Hispanic population in S. Idaho, it is no problem finding authentic tamales.

We could certainly take up a collection to pay for any culinary delights you want to share with your grateful campers?

Reilly, re your question about if Visas are needed to visit this insular corner of Idontno, that rightly belongs to the state of Utard!

You can follow Moosedrool's lead, and get a haircut, drive a pickup truck then attempt to blend in. However, if you want to show up in your old VW bus, with ancient black CA plates, and a peace symbol on the front: you might want to get some bumper stickers that will calm the locals down.

I can supply you with these, for a few bottles of fine wine.

Meat, fat, gluten, and salt!

Takes me back to my childhood in central Idontno, except we mostly ate the state vegetable, potatoes, for our starches.

My mother's mother homesteaded near City of Rocks in the early 1900's. In her older years she proudly told me she had eaten potatoes every day of her adult life.

They finally killed her by: "cumulative potato poisoning."

Yep!

Here is what I have thought so far about food and COR. Three morning meals (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday), and four dinners (Monday-Thursday). People will be out recreating during the day and can forage for lunch.

I can do Biscuits and Gravy and homefries and eggs without too much trouble every morning and maybe throw in some from-scratch corn-beef hash. If you like fruit and oatmeal, then you know what.

I will do my now-infamous Carne Asada on one night and probably a pasta feed for another. I was thinking maybe Ribs and tater-salad for another. Mex is always easy while camping, so that might be a fourth. I can do a Pollo Verde and rice burrito thing that seems to always satisfy or I will even entertain some suggestions at this point.

Anyone that wants to help in any way will be encouraged. I cook and I don't want to clean , although that is an important part of the logistics.

I love doing this stuff but I still want to have some time to goof around and go climbing, so I am trying to keep it simple but wholesome. Fun and fed is the bottom line.

Let's do this thing.

If anyone else wants to plan a meal or two along some other lines, then by all means pony up. I will offer my skills and knowledge if they are needed to help. I don't want to take over "the food" but I just want to offer my services and love for what I think of as good grub.

I can provide my big 2 burner propane camp stove w/ 5 gal cylinder. Thoughts regarding coffee preparation? I normally use a French Press for mine, but it only makes 3 cups...not enough. I do have a huge coffee pot/teakettle which could be a source of hot water for all...

Wine for the evening meals should be no problem, either...

Wayno: Sounds great. I will confess that previous COR campouts have been cold breakfast camps, except for hot fluids. I'm not certain how many takers you will find for hot breakfasts among us geriatrics.

Heidi & I will be glad to help with dinners. You mention ribs? Pork or beef? We have a local source of kosher pork riblets that we pre-roast, then reheat for a camping treat, so we could contribute some of those. We roast them up sooooo-dry, they are crunchy.

For Mex night, we will help out with Tamales, and Heidi's Fiesta (fart-esta) salad is always a hit.

We will also contribute some tables and our small two-burner propane stove.

We have another attendee for the Twin Sisters Group Camp for the nights of June 23-26, with checkout on June 27.

Currently City of Rocks camps are about 2/3 full for the nights of June 23-26 and the nearby Smoky Mountain deluxe with showers campsite near Almo & Castle Rock State Park is mostly available. They will fill up!

Campsites 1-4 in camp area 2 are adjacent to our Twin Sisters Group camp and share our deluxe shitter. 2 of those 4 camps are available for the dates we have the Twin Sisters group camp.

Brokedown mentioned early on that water is not available out at Twin Sisters, and there is also not garbage pickup. No problem, since both are available at the main climbing areas a couple miles away. The water at Bath Rock is not great, but just up the hill by the Breadloaves is another pump with very, very tasty water.

Fritz-

Have you calculated the total numbers involved, taking into consideration all the "Texas Buttheads" presumably camping up at Breadloaves? This could be the climbing community's "Social and Climbing Event of the Year!"

We also need to establish a "food fund," as we cannot expect Wayno to front the cash for all the cooking he's offered to do. Maybe Wayno should "shout out" how much he needs as a contribution from each individual on a daily basis to cover the expense of feeding these participants. I'm always up for participating in the aftermath cleanup, as are several others. Maybe we should set up a KP signup sheet by the day or meal?

I climbed both sisters numerous times in the 80's, each by several routes. The summit of the higher, northern sister is an amazing place. The long moderate multi-pitch routes on the west face of the south sister were really fun. The climbing was shut down by historical preservationists who felt, as they looked out the windows of the air-conditioned RVs, that seeing climbers on the rocks "destroyed their historical perspective". Of course, the jet contrails (or "chemtrails" to you conspiracy theorists) that are often streaming overhead do not have that effect for some reason. Maybe we should make the city a no-fly zone? A piece of private land at the base of the north sister was purchased in the 90's by an Idaho politician who built a vacation home on it - a line of power poles now stretches from the main gravel road to the house - they had power poles in 1849, didn't they? As a geologist, the coolest thing about the sisters is that the rock of the south sister is gneiss of the 2.5 billion-year-old Green Creek complex, while that of the north is 28 million year old Almo pluton.

Wednesday- Pollo Verde. Stewed chicken in a green sauce, made into burritos with rice and cheese, or maybe some of those "kosher" pork riblets that Fritz mentioned.

Thursday- Elk chili and fixins?

I'm still working on it. Any suggestions?

I'm going to bring a couple cases of a variety of good and inexpensive Italian wines that people can try. I encourage people to bring their favorite domestic stuff so we can compare and contrast.

I'm still knocked on my ass with gout but the serum must get through...

At this point it looks like the food will cost about a hundred bucks a day, give or take a sawbuck. Divided by thirty-something and that ain't bad.

No Paypal necessary, pay what you can, if you can, it always works out.

Wayno & all! A couple weeks back, I politely asked folks attending if they would like to suscribe to Wayno's gourmet dinner program.

I did not notice a response, although I have been mostly off ST and having vacation fun for the lats two-weeks.

Sigh.

Next week, I will email participants and ask for "yes, no, fuk-you, or I'll answer soon" responses.

Wayno? With my suspected/imagined "we want to eat Wayno Gourmet dinners" list of 20 people, are you able to give an estimate of meal cost for Mon-Thursday nights?
Wayno

If there are only twenty eaters, then it would easily be less than a hundred bucks a meal. Total. Divide by twenty, and you get the picture. If there are thirty plus, then at least a hundred, maybe add a double-saw-buck. The wine is another deal. I'm going to bring a bunch and just see how it rolls.

I am sending an email to those attendees who have not posted on this thread within the last couple of weeks, with questions about if they are still planning on attending, and if they wish to sign up for Wayno's bargain dinner plan.

I also looked at my group camp reservation costs, and realized I had originally signed up for only 12 people, and that besides the reservation fee of $25.00, there is a per camper charge of $3.18 per night = $381.60. That works out to about $13.55 per camper for the 4 night stay. I am mellow about collecting that money now, and these things all work out in the end.

There may also be a daily, but minor individual charge for excess vehicles, but I can't find information on that for group camps.

Wayno posted this suggested menu a while back and we just discussed it on the phone.

Monday- Carne Asada & Heidi's Fiesta salad.

Tuesday- Pasta feed. Noodles, meat sauce, Italian sausage and mt.balls, garlic bread, Ceasar salad.

Wednesday- Pollo Verde. Stewed chicken in a green sauce, made into burritos with rice and cheese, and some of those "kosher" pork riblets that Fritz mentioned.

Thursday- Short ribs and fixins?

Any suggestions?

I'm going to bring a couple cases of a variety of good and inexpensive Italian wines that people can try. I encourage people to bring their favorite domestic stuff so we can compare and contrast.

Meal cost is estimated by Wayno as $5.00 per dinner for 20 people and $4.00 for 30 people. I have to roll with his professional cost estimates, but some here worry that he is doing the work and shorting himself money-wise. Heidi and I are also contributing, ice, “kosher”-pork-riblets and some other side dishes.

Let’s count on $25.00 per person total for 4 dinners, and plan on contributing labor, snacks, & liquor. Wayno can also work out an individual wine price.

One more note on Wayno's group meals.

If you are attending & have that much to loan, and wish to move towards the head of the "great persons to have around list" let us know. However, for now, plan on bringing your own utensils and plates. You may well want a camp chair too, since we won't have extras of those either.

Participants so far are loaning us.

A deluxe 4-burner stove.

3 large tables for goodies, liquor, & cooking.

A couple large flies in case of too much rain or sun.

I have been preparing for this voyage of discovery by gorging, not fasting, on Bear Grylls' potato salad.

See, real belayers (like me and Bear and Moosedrool--who is also a leader, of course) dispense with the extras, the so-called "girlie" fixin's like celery, caraway (bleagh!), salt, pepper, olives, eggs, those cute red thingies, or even the usual MOOSE turd bits; we stick to the basics, which are potatoes, onions (raw, lots of raw onions), real mayo and MUStard.

I'll make us up a big bowl when I get there; if I can find some tater-tasters with local knowledge and a stash (of russets!), then so much the better. And Fritz, do you get Hellman's or Best Foods up there? It's Hellman's on the east side of the Rockies, ya know.

I will be bringing potato salad, but how many want eggs, how many want no eggs...we can work out by adding these (and other things!) as we see fit.

I will provide enough for thirty or more helpings and bring at least one extra bowl for different versions, depending. I'll find some mayo at the Grocery Outlet here and some of those other "girlie" ingredients, too.

"No picnic is complete without ants and potato salad."

I will bring a large cooler. Like 64 qts, I think. That should help for sure.

I am really looking forward to this gig. I remember the jolly times at reunions at Obsidian Flat group camp on the Eastside about 10-15 yrs back. A whole lotta fun there, but no climbing. It was on the Solstice, too, as a tradition.

Don't worry much about a good beer selection. Rock City pizza in Almo will knock your socks off. Spread a little $ around in the local economy. Their pizza is not bad and the service is family friendly.

One of the 'little groceries' has showers and serves breakfast. Then there's the local hot springs and swimming pool - even better for full immersion cleansing and chillaxin' with the locals.

I think lots of coolers will always be helpful.

I also have a collection of disposable eating ware that I will bring. I'm not sure how much either but it should at least be a couple nights worth.

Rock City has good pizza, but most times they are "sold out." Don't count on being able to always have it available. On the other hand, they have a great selection of wines.

The Almo store doesn't have much; the closest major town is Burley with a full gamut of supermarkets and other amenities. That's about 45 minutes away.

On Backing out of a Cinema

TR writing is a trip in itself.

Sometimes having lived through a trip causes our consciousness to do strange and trrrippy thingsssss.

I'd like to Trip Report on the time I went to see The Trip in Sssandy Eggo.

I bought a ticket and went in and looked for others. I was alone except for one guy up in the last row. It was trrrippy and sh!t like that.

And then came the giant Hoppers.

i managed to back out of the theater, but it took me forever, man...it took me the rest of eternity, man!

and it was totally dark and sh!t by the time I got out of the lobby with my face smeared with melted chocolate.

aye still have the ticket stub someplace.

that was some weird movie!

sow i tried some lsd later when i got to treasure eyesland near the haight.

and now look, here i am, channeling a norwegian gnome name climber i'm kinda fonda.

and this is no norse saga but a real made-up story about the year 1967.

i began rudimentary climbing the next season.

i considered myself an experienced guide because i passed the acid test one time.

Coverage for both near Almo, but very unlikely from City of Rocks. Free limited access wireless in Almo at park HQ.

I've almost finished my prep work for vittles. Looking good.

Last night I made the pasta sauce and the meatballs for Tuesday's dinner. Some may scoff at such simple fare but to me(italian-american) this is real comfort food. Maybe not what they eat in Italy, but this is what my recent ancestors made with the food they could get, which was probably way better than they could get in Italy at the time. They left there for a better opportunity. They came from Napoli (Campania), one of the poorest and most populated regions of Italy. I an truly thankful they made such a voyage.

OK Moose & Mouse. Here is a backroads byway that avoids the Utah urban mess, and the Twin Falls Idaho much smaller urban mess that is on Spider’s Hwy 93 route.
Here’s a map with the route in pink.

1. On I-80 Proceed east past Elko-last supermarkets & decent hotels and past Wells 50 miles east, and then----- some miles after Wells, ---- exit onto Nevada Hwy 33 at Oasis (blink and you will miss it).
2. Drive NE to northern Utah and the Hwy changes to Utah 30. Stop and change to appropriate clothing for red-neck LDS culture.
Just after entering Utah, you can turn left onto a decent road that should be signed for Grouse Creek & Etna and if you are lucky, work north-east to City of Rocks. I’ve never gone that way and it looks a little tricky on Google Earth.

Instead:
3. After a number of miles, Turn left on Utah Hwy 42, which becomes Idaho Hwy 81 in a few miles. The junction should have signs for Idaho towns including Malta.

Here’s a detail map of the next part of the adventure.

4. A couple miles inside Idaho, you may notice the now mostly-abandoned town of Strevell. There should be some ruins. About a mile north of Strevell, turn left on Strevell road, which should be marked.
5. You are now in the land of good two-lane 50 mph gravel roads. Proceed west on Strevell Rd for about 17-18 miles to Yost Road and turn right (north).
6. Yost Road may be marked and will also be good gravel. Proceed North for about 3 miles, until it ends at EY or Narrows Road and turn left (west).
7. EY or Narrows Road will be very good two lane gravel. Proceed west on it for about 4-5 miles until it ends. Turn right (north) and drive into Almo.

Grouse Creek & Etna and if you are lucky, work north-east to City of Rocks.

On the maps I have, it looks like it would go. Grouse Creek road to Goose Creek road, right into Oakley. Or Grouse Creek and some other trickery and end up in Almo.

I have no idea what kind of navigation skills you M&M guys have, or what your adventure tolerance is like, but it looks like an interesting shortcut.

edit-- it just occurred to me that Moose and Mouse should drive by way of Goose and Grouse Creek roads. Its a fekkin Omen I tell ya.

Wayno, Moose, & Mouse: I have in the long-ago driven north on Grouse Creek Road and ended up on Goose Cr. It was still a long way of twisty gravel into Oakley and along the way I was interacting with 18 wheelers hauling Oakley Stone, which is a big thing in the decorator stone biz.

It would be a fun adventure to instead work NE towards City of Rocks.

If you make the connection?

You would end up driving east towards the Twin Sisters and our camp-site on a good gravel road.

However!

Heidi and I did drive the California Trail from Goose Creek up Birch Creek Road, and then the California trail and road-----more or less vanished.

Please remember that some of the locals enjoy destroying road signs, to protect their identity or for firewood.

We drove up Birch Creek on decent roads that changed to 4WD roads to some old mines and then past "No-Trespassing" signs, which I ignored, and then we worked down to the east, with the Twin Sisters as a landmark and along the way saw "California Trail" signs once again. (no cell phone service in this whole area)

After driving through several more "NO-Trespassing" signs, we were back on the Birch Creek Road, which goes back down to Oakley, or you can exit in two places to City of Rocks.

Yes! There are two different Birch Creeks within 10 miles of each-other.

Welcome to Idontno.

A fishing note for Wayno! Upper Goose Creek does have a lot of small trout------as I recall Cutthroats! I didn't do new research, but my old memory tells me they were not Rainbows.

FWIW: Brutus and I drove the dirt road (marked as 27 on Fritz's detail map) south from CoR to Lucin; I think that was in 2008. As I recall, good dirt roads, easy driving, no services and only a few tiny settlements of unknown inhabitants ("yew shure got a pretty mouth"). It cut off some miles, but maybe not much time. YMMV! Be sure your spare tire is pumped up.

No Whole Paycheck Foods in Twin Falls. Our favorite supermarket there is Winco, which is a regional chain with great prices.

Also in Twin Falls are: Costco, Fred Meyer, Smiths, Albertsons, and Walmart.

There is a new Whole Paycheck foods in Boise, but the local's fav there for Health foods and a huge wine selection in a separate store, is The Boise Coop.

Heidi & I did a resupply trip to the big-city today and ran other personal-maintenance errands. (Boise is the Big-City for us).

We are now resupplied for weekend City-bound guests and the City of Rocks party, except for ice and other last minute additions.

I need to amend the party attendee list. The weather is now going from snow to hot at the city, but please remember to bring your rainwear------so it won’t rain.

Sign up now for Wayno’s gourmet Italian meal plan. I swear we are going to limit dining guests to those that pre-reserve!

Here's another updated list for attendees at Twin Sisters Group camp with check-in on Monday June 23 and mandatory checkout on Friday June 27.

Email me or post up on this thread if you would like to camp with us, sans pets & small children.

ATTENDEES FOR (pretty-much) SURE!
Fritz & Heidi*
Donini & Angela*
Ralph T (AK Trad) & friend*
Brokedownclimber*

Moosedrool* & Mouse from Merced*
Grippa from slc--on meal plan for Mon-Tues*

Jack & Pat & their climber daughter.* Showing up late on Monday, and on the meal plan for Tues-Thurs.

=22-24 people for meals. The max number in the group camp is 30.

phylp is on for dinners*!*

Nearby attendees-across the road from group camp:
Wayno, Marsha & Big Mike*

Likely visitors:
Apolobamba
Philo, Steve W, Crump, ddriver, T, & Gilroy from “up the hill.”

Also anyone that wants to participate in Chef Wayno's 4 deluxe Full-value Italian dinners for $25.00 total, even if they are not at group camp let us/me know. Please sign up by June 19, so Wayno can pre-plan/prepare/pre-cook & freeze the meals.

I put an asterisk * after the attendee name or group to indicate if they are signed up for the dinner plan (currently 22-24 people, although invites are out for up to 1 more).

Chef Wayno kindly worked 3 friends of Donini into the dinner plan earlier today, and emailed me that he had a little bit of give in his menu for more people, then two more Donini friends that had not been involved in this thread emailed me for dinner reservations late afternoon.

Chef Wayno is now at work. I have an email into him with your dinner reservation-----but he may be maxed out on meals.

BigMike - a standard city rack is a double set essentially. the more difficult lines have a higher degree of gear needs (naturally), but that'll get you up 90% of the routes. I usually bring a double set, and set of offset cams for the wonky finger cracks that I like to climb there.

Going to be a bit warm but I've climbed there in early August. Chasing the shade with some midday siestas works well. Shade temps. always fine because of dry air.
Group inertia will work against morning starts to maximize cool temps but i'll make the coffee for those willing to roll out before the sun turns their tents into greenhouses.
Grippa had a good rack for you Mike...70 m rope is nice but not necessary.
Looking forward to the red wine...chianti, malbec, shiraz or pinot noir...cabs and merlots don't work for me anymore.

How about a map or two for those that don't have a fix on the Twin Sisters Group Camp?

Since we are down to a blessed 19 people camping in group camp, our shared fees have gone up a smidge to $15.00 each total for 4 nights.

Wayno's dinner fees continue at $25.00 per person for 4 nights, or $6.25 a night, plus your help in preparing, cooking, and cleaning. No problem to pay me or Wayno for each or both, during the campout, with check or cash. I actually made up a spreadsheet to keep track of this confusing matter.

The Twin Sisters stand out pretty well.

Wow! This is going to be great fun. I will try to be restrained until Monday!

I just got an updated US Weather Service forecast for the next 7 days at COR

The good news is: high temps will be in the mid-70's F., down from the mid 80's.

The interesting news is: there is an increased chance of afternoon thunderstorms.

The best news is: our campsite has great views of incoming thunderstorms, especially at night.

Yesterday's forecast for City of Rocks was 80% chance of rain, but it held off until about 4:00 P.M.----then the storm hit hard with high winds and about 1/3 " of rain.

Inside the fly during the storm. We had moved Chef Wayno's dinner prep to one end, and we crowded into the other.

The storm cleared for dinner and a large & welcome fire afterwards.

All's well that ends well!

This morning, most of the remaining group left, but the Donini's are climbing with his old pal Jack & his wonderful wife Pat.

Big thanks to Wayno & Masha for all their hard work and wonderful food & wine. The event would have been much less tasty & fun without them.

I do want to give a big "thank-you" to the "Worker-Bees" that helped so much in camp. These are the people that bring some yummy & special snacks or deserts. Super fun road trip. A huge thanks to Fritz & Heidi for hosting. Wayno is an awesome chef and a damn fine person. Thanks to Donini for the energy. So many great people, so fun to meet; Phylp, Emknot, Tackle & Family, Mouse, Moose, BigMike, HV, Grippa, Mark Mason, Brokedown, and many more. If you weren't here, we talked about you, good things only.
Fortunately Zion is the perfect mid-point between COR & LA. Thanks to Grippa for the tips on where to eat and sleep. He's a local.

Grippa, Scoped out the BLM site but winds were high. Nice place. Got a cheap but very clean room at the Zion Park Motel.

Sorry about that Mike. Fixed now.

What an awesome crew! Lots of people offered assistance with the food prep, but Mark Mason was my go-to guy. Thanks, Mark for the cooking gear and your help.

I would have loved to go climbing but my feet were still too sensitive to even try. Next time. The scenery at COR is so special that it was just great to hang out and ponder the passage of time and people.

Fritz and Heidi were awesome hosts and their friends are some of the coolest people around. Everyone I met was genuinely interesting. This is an event that will surely be on my calender next year.

Thank you one and all for making it a worthy adventure.

Kim Miller & his son Joe stopped by late on Thursday during the deluge. He brought a bunch of Cinnamon rolls for a desert treat for us. Unfortunately he didn't stay for long, since conditions were so windy & wet and I didn't even take a photo.

Much thanks Kim! http://www.supertopo.com/climbers-forum/1016283/Kim-Miller-appreciation-thread

I do need to report that, although he wasn't one of our group, an unfortunate fatality occurred in camp on Thursday morning. Timmy, one of the most likable of the Golden Mantled Ground Squirrels that swarmed our camp, fell into our 5 gallon wash-water bucket and drowned.

Mark and I discovered the little fellow, and I fished him out, but it appeared that even mouth to squirrel-lip resuscitation would not save him. A “Sky-burial” ceremony was performed.

R.I.P. Timmy.

It wasn't easy but I did get some laughs. Mouse has some health issues also(as most of us do) but he was still able to get some climbing in. At one point he said he got to climb more than wayno, and at least he was not on the bottom of the food chain. A good laugh was had. Great to see you again, Brian.

A big shout out for Big Mike, who made a great travel partner. Mike, the truck finally died last night as Masha pulled up out front. I'm glad it didn't happen out in eastern Oregon somewhere.

Damn! I'm glad we made her drive with her lights off buddy!! Lol

The food was simply AMAZING!. Restaurant quality food while camping at 6000 feet. Pretty impressive to say the least. Thanks to chef Wayno and all his helpers, Masha, Mark, Fritz (Killer short ribs Fritz!!) , Heidi, Phylp, Mouse (made an excellent potato salad) and of course anyone I forgot.

Fritz and Heidi- Thanks for your excellent hospitality! Your guest bed was an amazing respite for a weary traveller. Thanks for putting this whole thing together! What a blast!

Jim and Angela- Thanks for all the wisdom and the stories. It was a great pleasure to meet you and i'm sorry we didn't get to rope up more. I hope to correct that next time we meet up. Tell Angela thanks for the topical ibuprofen and the interesting conversations as well. Sorry i didn't get to see you guys before we left, i was packing all morning, and you were gone when we went to say goodbye.

Moose: Thanks for the cheese n' sh#t bro! Lol and all the laughs of course. It was a great pleasure to hangout with you and watch you climb. Give yourself a little credit you're pretty good for such a late bloomer... ;)

Paige, Pat and Jack: It was a pleasure. Thanks for all the stretching help Paige. You saved me from inevitable disaster. Pat it was very nice talking to you and thank you for sharing Jack's story. Jack, thanks for the inspiration and the top rope! It's always nice to meet other paraplegia survivors and it was very cool to hear your climbing tales around the campfire.

Phylp: It's always nice talking to you! Let's make a point of roping up next time!

Em: Thanks for the coffee! It was nice to meet you. I loved your little yellow umbrella with ears... And the balls you had to just walk right by the ranchers house... Lol!!!

That's very gracious of you Em. Moving fast on a toprope is not quite as hard as moving fast on lead to say the least. And you didn't report the 30 minutes I took to get 15 feet between two bolts on the next route we did! I kept having visions of a sprained ankle just before my trip to London!

Angela and I are back in e-mail land after a couple of days in Olympic National Park. Had a great time! What a way to meet new friends and renew with old. Kudos to Fritz and Heidi for putting it on and Wayno and Marsha for the fabulous dinners!
Everybody was great....the evenings abounded with campfire tales honed from years of experience in the outdoor realm and we even got to climb a bit.
Moosedrool is indeed "rookie of the year." He started at the tender age of 57 and with his fitness and enthusiasm the sky is the limit....the sky being a relative term.

drljefe:

Indeed!

There were no play-pens of screaming children.

There were two very nice dogs that visited camp for party hours, but over-nighted in other camps.

We dined gracefully at about 8:00 PM every night and all agreed Chef Wayno did a wonderful job, along with his many "Worker-bee" helpers.

There were 3 very-amused and very-fun folks in their mid-20's that seemed to tolerate our geriatric regimen-------and even appeared to be having a very good time.

I think the next youngest camper was 55 and the ages ranged up to 74.

Sigh. I didn't see any rubber chickens.

We would all love to interact with more younger climbers, but the "no-dogs, no small children" rules remain in place for a likely 2015 COR-Fest.

Per several requests, including from Chef Wayno: camp & dining attendance will be 30 people maximum in 2015.

2015 is a long time away, and I'm still a risk-taker. Things could change.

You all have been patiently waiting for pix, but while cut off from the net I wrote this streaming consciousness Trip Report.

After the Rock City Blues

There is no beautiful internet. I have came home to my not-beautiful house. There, underground, flows a broken promise, a stream of unpaid bills. I have no cash to pay my bills, at least not until the new month; and so we’ll see how this plays out. ‘nuf said?? Bit more to add.

The RockCity is magnificent. You know that. I have never been so far to the east, nor but once have I traveled through portions of four states, though this time it was with a chauffeur.

He drives easy...
I was a victim of Rock City Blues, almost. My friends kept my spirits up, though my body has failed me. I found I could not climb as I had wished, suffering want of breath after getting off the ground in decent form. Yes, it’s true: I FLAMED OUT! Having made the starting moves as stylish as I could (that is, seemingly with no effort) on two climbs, My Private Idaho and First Lead, both on a yo-yo, I had to admit that I am PAST IT, WASHED UP, FINITO, and REALLY GETTING OLD. This is a shock to any ancient teenager such as I.

But my companions seemed to think little of it. At least I had tried, not once, but twice, and they know they, too, will hit a wall sooner or later, as I did. I thank them for their beer and sympathy and belays most heartily.

It happens; Not to all, but to many of us. Eventually, one’s past “weaknesses” catch up to us and our bodies cannot perform. Even mundane things like eating and sleeping are affected and there is a spiral downwards, coinciding with the onset of aging, which ruins our expectations, causing The Blues.

I was a fairly heavy smoker beginning at eighteen. I have drunk my share of alcoholic beverages and more. There was the meth for a time. What did I expect, neglecting the warnings against such behavior?

Now that “I’ve got it figured out,” I find that I will not be moving anyplace near the city I just checked out, the City of Rocks. I’ll still be “from Merced,” as long as I live, but I think it’s best I stay living at this altitude, near-sea level, with its crappy air and its insane auto traffic and no Range Cattle, Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrels, colorful cactus flowers, and inviting spots in which to linger, enjoying the rest of my life.

But it was fine for a time to be in a place where it seems that you can reach up and touch the clouds.

Idaho is just too damned high for lungers who want to be active. Even Minden, NV, where I spent time with Andrcej at his home, is at an elevation (@ 4,700’) that precludes my living there. I had a great time and have pictures. What more do I need? Aside from more reliable income, that is...

I came to the decision that I will continue to participate in these get-togethers, as they are too good to miss, the friends I make are uniformly friendly and kind and generally appreciate my posts on the Taco, which is fulfilling.

And I am a good belayer. Ask Heidi, ask Moosedrool, ask BrokeDownClimber, and ask Mark Mason. I don’t mind looking up into the sun. I leave my pipe in the pack with the camera. On one thing only should a good belayer concentrate—the person on the end of the rope. Have belay device—will travel.

So this is what I got from this City of Rocks invite: I can’t climb any more myself, but I can help others have a good time.

As a last note on this subject, I would like to say to WAYNO, I know what you went through, bud, all week long. His gout and my heavy breathing kept us both on the ground, despite our wishes to the contrary.

“C’est la vie,” say the Old Folks, “for soon we’ll all be in hell.”

The Gaetano D’Aquino Moscato made the trip to California in great shape, whoever left it in my cooler.
There were a couple of passable bottles of white, as well, which I considered booty, but know came from Wayno. Moosedrunk insists on calling him Wino. Which brings up this question:
What is the difference twixt muscatel and moscato?—remember, I have no internet with the answer to everything.
Does the Idaho winery produce a variety called moscotel? Or is it moscotato?

Muscovites are said to be directly descended from Tatars,
But some are not descended from taters.
They are russet taters growing there, not red taters.
They happen to be Red Staters, not Blue.
--John C. Freedaho, the Bathfinder

“The Ten-Thousand Century Choss Report”
“There is more choss in this Western Panorama Country than there is in all your sage philosophy. For instance, if all the bigger chunks were broke down, Goshamiti knows how many little pieces of choss, all reposed at a certain angle, more or less, might result. Near as we can tell, the state of Nevada is just flattened-out choss, and lots of Utah is the same way. The true angle of repose for choss in both of those states seems to be zero.”
Moosechoss & Mousechoss, “Choss-Sniffers Plus,” as seen on The Weather Channel

Cycles of dry and wet: we saw sheepish clouds coming homeward. A sea of them. I took zero pictures, having a dry camera battery...and it rained on us at City of Rocks. Fortunately, Moosebrew’s beer stash seemed bottomless, and the wine flowed like a river, so there was a consistent “wet pattern” throughout the week, affecting several other climbers, like Fritz and Em Knott. My greatest apologies to both, one more time. Boyishly, the old boy slinks away, humbled by their magnanimity. Thank you for the companionship and I am sold on Pomegranate Juice.

As a rule, Donini won’t drink before six p.m. Laudable. Exemplary, in fact. At the time of my party foul I had hardly finished my first beer (it was one of MooseBrew’s with a high alcohol percentage, though.)

This fopo took place shortly after my cursing Zeus for the rainstorm. We were gathered round the campstove while Wayno was preparing rue for the glop he was concocting. I just felt a bit put-upon by such a display of heaven-sent impediment to a good time that I yelled up at him some imprecation. Immediately the lid flew off of the pot of rue and landed on the ground, amazing all who saw this reply from Olympus. WHOA! Sorry, ThunderBoy!

I got the hot side of the car going home. The north side. * squint * “Port out, starboard home,” is what they used to say on passenger ships bound for the Orient. Which became the word, “posh.”

Plagues of cones. Orange cones on the highway. Surrounding us. Hounding us. Confounding us. Especially so around El Conevada.. And not one solitary Giant Orange along the route, but there never are any more. Viva La Sierra Naranjo!

And returning home over Carson Pass there were hundreds, yes, hundreds, of Lycra-clad bicyclers. Squads of them. Miles and miles of them, all on the right-hand side of the highway, heading uphill like a swarm of butterflies of all varieties, and all had helmet-heads with Oakleys for eyes.
“Lepedaloptera.”

It’s a wonder more riders aren’t squished on automobile grilles and windshields, as they sometimes have a silly tendency to ride side-by-side, not in single file s they ought. They seem to leave their brains in their cubicles on Friday, some of these pretties, thereby obviatin the need for helmets, if you ask me.

Moosedrool knows this road well, has it wired, in fact, and barely slows down for the bikes. Eff them, as long as WE were safe.
He said he’d already got his “bag” earlier this year, and had a freezer full of helmets.
He was joking. HA HA HA! There is no bag limit on pedalestrians!
I could walk up that hill faster than some of them seemed to be riding.
And I’m a very sick man...

And there was “The Hawk” on the return trip. Not the ill-starred, bitchy avatar, but the universal sound of the Sierras, 104.1 Mhz. ROCK & ROLL!

Moosecruel tells me how he loves The Blues, not the urban BB King stylists, but the John Lee Hooker down-home singers and callers. LIGHTNIN’ HOPKINS! TAJ MAHAL! NAVIN JOHNSON!

Pound that steering wheel, MooseBuhl!

And what have we here in the San Joaquin flats?
REAL bikers! Another joke! HAHAHAHA! No Lycra here, boys.

In asking you to build and decorate your houses more beautifully, I do not ask you to spend large sums, as art does not depend in the slightest degree upon extravagance or luxury, but rather, the procuring of articles which are beautiful and fitted to impart pleasure to the observer as they did to the maker.
In an age when science has undertaken to declaim against the soul and spiritual nature of man, and when commerce is ruining beautiful rivers, magnificent woodlands and the glorious skies in its greed for gain...the artist comes forward as a priest and prophet of nature to protest.
--Oscar Wilde, lecture on The House Beautiful, 1882 American tour

Philosopoopers like Donini will tell you that old climbing gear is not on HIS rack. He uses only the lightest and strongest and modern of equipment; and he can’t understand the fascination collecting old gear holds for others. The old gear which is avidly collected by others and left moldering in milk cartons in the garage by yet more climbers, is given away by him, or put to some other use than climbing. Donini sets no store by the past when it comes to equipment. And yet his ethics are unimpeachable and based on traditional values.

Jim was expounding on this topic at the campfire, which led to the discussion by some others of “Where have all the church-keys gone?“
“What’s a church-key?”
“I had a good collection of eight-track tapes going and then they started using cassettes.”
“What’s an eight-track?”
“Well, I drove a Pinto death-mobile during the gas crunch and I didn’t like it, let me tell you.”
“Gas crunch? Pinto? WTF?”
Things like that. So goes the campfire conversation, a blend of mostly gray hairs leavened by younger climbers.

BrokeDownClimber’s stories are AWESOME, to use the tritest word imaginable. I enjoyed the time spent with Rodger, at his age the eldest of all of those present. Donini was second-oldest, I was third-oldest. Listening to Rodger’s stories and discussing almost any topic with this gent was a highlight of my trip. He’s erudite, practical, and soulful. And he’s going to Italy again this year to climb. May you climb high, my friend!

We old guys need all the leavening we can get. It was with appreciation that I met some of these leavening agents and that we got on because we have the same basic appreciation for the outdoors and climbing and beer, which appreciation doesn’t seem to change, in general, from one generation to another. I like that consistency.

MooseJewel had this to say after he climbed several days in a row with Donini. “I’m always the old duffer on a climbing rope. This experience blew my mind.” Or words to similar effect. Moosie is only sixty, a “baby angle” on the ST rack, having only started climbing three years ago.

A salute to Willy Nelson, who can't wait to get on the road again.
This is a selection of prime Nevada choss photos taken as we sped unerringly to our destination. I admit it was tempting, but that's the nature of choss...it's all lies when you've done the approach. COR is just the opposite. It's honest granite, in plain view for all to see. No BS.

Enough desert for ya?

I really wanted to to sit in the pools but the place didn't open until four. Being the camp cook, I didn't have time before dinner and after dinner there was too much wine flowing to allow a safe and legal drive to Almo. Another reason to make a return journey to the fabled City.

I have no cash to pay my bills,

We never stopped at Register Rock, Steve.

Showers are $4.24 at Tracy's in Almo, at the huge poplar tree. I don't know of any hot tubs except maybe at the Dude's mansion everyone was talking about.

And T Hocking, the hernia surgery is not even scheduled yet. No idea when, but maybe in August, if then. You missed this one, but you better make Facelift this fall, or the shit's comin' down, my buddy. Wish you could have gotten there. Say, "Lay hey there vie," ten times and then have a tonic. You'll love it if you can get to COR. Just our style, dude! And the shitters are not to be believed! They have HAND SANITIZER, even. (That's a good name for a new crack climb, I believe.)
On the second day there was Light and then Lightheartedness. And Kevin showed us the ropes on the place by taking us to Emery Pass and to Elephant Rock, where MooseCool got his first lead, but after some Connecticutians came off the route.
Elephant Rock, here comes MooseDoo and he's on a roll.I just finished the Cap from Conn. by C.S. Forster and we were driving MD's Forester. Weird? No, it's not. It's me. I bet Rodger's read it, too.I been tokin' on Mike's and Wayno's sh!t all week. Thanks, brothers!
Wayno, I am Mr. Month-to-Month and lately my funds are short because the payments on the car from my buddy Vern are short. Things will improve when his wife finds a job up in North Fork, near Bass Lake, or somewhere Toll Housey like that. The lucky sod moved to 2,800' where the air is sometimes breathable, though it's just upwind from Fresburg. But thanks, I will survive. You're a prince of a fellow to offer. And you don't serve up glop. :0)

Yada yada yada. Got it. And who struck you with a piton hammer? Yammer yammer yammer.

Tuesday a.m.
By about nine-ish everyone had left to climb. Moosedrool and I elected to come with Jim and Angela. Grippa and a partner (whose name has escaped me--sorry) came to the same spot, the very garden-like end of Decadent Wall, I guess it's the west end?

Anyway, we all got on Private Idaho and the climb next left. Jim led that one, and then Moosedrool followed.

Every leader begins by cleaning and every legend begins somewhere.

This is where I flamed out the first time, too.

These are mainly just the climbing shots I took. It's a truly wonderful little garden as you can tell. Wood roses abound.
The weather threat evaporated when we quit this spot to join the main gang down in the sunny vale of the Decadent Wall.

Sdit:
Fritz sends me his love and corrections. Thanks, I get lost in new spots with no map in my head but stange lines and weird dots instead.

He sez: Brian: Your last batch of photos and prose posted on the COR thread are at west side of Bath Rock. Decadent Wall is up at the Breadloaves and was where you folks went next.

Good Mormon, Wayno! This isn't the most flattering photo, but it probably looks like you do of a typical morning.

I hope your feet are improved, your truck gets better, and that you get to climb at COR next year.

Your "performance" of your self-appointed job and your volunteerism are a model for all members of the Taco community.

Like I said, way upthread, Community Of Rocks.

Having had time to mull over events, I've decided that the most moving and fascinating moments for me were those which I shared alone with Rodger, our Brokedownclimber.

The man is such a treat to talk with and he has stories of my heroes like Kor, stories of a beautiful wee pixie of a climber he loves, stories of working in his profession of chemistry, and of the Dolomites, especially.

Rodger, here's to you and your "continuity factor" in this community is at an all-time high, my man. Thanks for the beta on the past. See ya at Facelift.

Boris the dog would like to thank all of his human friends for letting him be a dog and do what dogs do: guard the food supply.

If Fritz didn't bend his rule a bit, then Masha would not have attended and my support team would have been a crap shoot. I'm sure people would have stepped up to the plate but Masha and I have been doing this together many years and it would not have been the same.

The long drive was tough on Boris and we weren't sure if he still had it in him. He was stoic and made the trip just fine. By the second day he seemed to have more energy and lifting him into the truck was not as hard as it was. He would actually try to jump in by himself. Good for him, but his unexpected exuberance caused bodily harm. First, he smashed my nose, then, he gave Masha a black eye. I wonder if any didn't believe us and actually thought I "lumped her up". Too funny.

Since we got home, Boris has been more energetic than he has been of late and we are sure that the COR trip and his new friends really made a difference. If you remember the thread about how sick Boris was , you can appreciate my feelings about this dog and this wonderful community of people we have here. The Supertopo Forum community is quite special in my experience.

I don't know about you all, but I'm sill kinda buzzed from the Cor trip. It wasn't all fun, there was some work involved, but the general tone was peaceful and productive to the point that those two concepts can compliment one another. I had the sublime feeling that the sky was smiling at us. Except of course, Thursday afternoon, where the sky could only in the briefest of moments, be considered as happy. Let's do it again, next time.

I learned a few things, and that isn't always easy to say sometimes. Especially when you think you have something figured out. I'm learning to cherish these moments, no matter how seemingly difficult. Now let's all tip one, and, Ching-ching.

Hi folks.
It was a great pleasure to have met you all at City of Rocks. Mary and I felt honored to be able to join in on Tuesday's dinner and the accompanying campfire tales.

Wayno was an awesome chef (the photos are proof, I think), Fritz and Heidi were great hosts.. thanks, you two, for putting this together. Great conversations, and a a lot of laughs were had.. we hope to meet all of you again.

It turned out to be a bad decision to leave early because we ended up getting rained out in the Tetons (sorry to hear about your brief storm there, ours lasted three days!). With the beta we received from Donini and Jack T. we felt we were dialed in for success on the Grand! Of course, Mother Nature always ends up having the last say..

We did get to climb in Montana at Gallatin Canyon, and up in Canmore before I drove the last of our 4500km (!) loop to get home and back to work (Mary stayed in the Rockies to do a weekend yoga retreat, lucky girl).

And now I've been able to view the stories and photos that you guys have posted up.. awesomely entertaining.. Mouse, you're a true artist! Moose Drool, Big Mike, HV, Fritz, Spider, Em Knott, BDC, Phyl.. and the rest of ya, cheers!

A little lightning fire near "The City" appears to not currently be a threat, however another fire 100 miles north went from 7,000 acres to 31,000 acres yesterday. Big Thunderstorms have been ripping it up in South & Central Idaho, with a fair number of fires resulting.

A 30-acre fire ignited about seven miles from the City of Rocks National Reserve campground Tuesday afternoon.

That fire, called the Black Sands fire, was ignited by lightning about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. By about 8 p.m. crews had stopped the progression of the fire and were mopping up as they built a containment line.

The fire is burning in juniper, sagebrush, and grasses. Estimated control time is 6 p.m. Friday and containment is estimated on July 19.

Five engines, a helicopter and a dozer are working the fire. No structures are threatened.

Kevin had his eye on Eagle Crack since the moment he first spotted it from camp. After lunch we all hiked up there and I didn't climb because i tweaked my elbow on Twin Cracks. So i shot some pics instead.

More nice photos, Mike! Just seeing more photos of that wonderful climbing venue makes me want to return now that my back is doing much better.

I was actually pretty bummed out due to some extreme lower back and pelvis issues during the get-together. I had a procedure done after my return that seems to have improved everything tremendously. It took nearly 5 weeks recovery time after the treatment, but I'm now able to have almost complete range of motion activities again.

So...keep these wonderful and inspirations shots coming!

Big Mike!

WOW-OH-WOW------For your photos! Mark & I hiked out to the Twin Cracks area the day after you folks climbed it, and we followed your Eagle Rock ascent from camp----just before the deluge arrived.

Stunning photos!

Greg stopped by for a short visit at my booth at the SLC Outdoor Retailer Show today!

Great to see him again!

You gents are great!

I walked out that road and watched you guys climb the first pitch. That is a real cool area and it is probably good that it doesn't get much pressure. Em hiked out there with her umbrella and all and even walked across that private property there. A bold adventure indeed! Good times.

Nice results, Big Mike. Both the climb and the shots of it.

As for no-longer BrokeDownClimber, I'm glad to hear you've mended. And the eagles say "Take it easy." Until you need to put it into gear.

Hope all goes supre-taco in Italia, amici.

Is that still in the works?

You said, Rodger, "I know Mouse has more pictures, so he's better post up!"

I confess. There are still a few left.

Thanks Roger! I'm glad to hear your back is feeling better! I could tell you were a little down at cor.. You seemed much happier at camp eating great food, drinking quality vino and conversing with everyone, then you did when we were talking to you in the shade at Breadloaves..

What was the procedure? I know a few things about broken backs unfortunately being fused from t-12 to l4.

Fritz- Thanks!! We did get a little wet that day didn't we.... Nothing major though, and we still got out the next day!

You are awesome Fritz! Thank you for such a warm welcome, your hospitality, and the effort to put this all together!! It really made it an amazing experience!

Yeah Wayno. Real cool area. A little more rustic out there. Twin cracks was a little dusty... Nothing by Squamish standards though! Lol

Em has ovaries for that!! I wish i had of got a photo of her doing it!

Mouse, my friend. Thanks! We still need to get you going with raw. Do you have at least windows 7? This is a free product from Canon that they just totally revamped!!

If not, here's an older version. http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Canon-Digital-Photo-Professional-Download-78921.html

That should get you started..

Ok. I got a couple more photos done from camp that night.

My camp spot under the sisters.

Spider making jokes again with beer packaging again... :)

Fritz and Greg on the prowl while the group pow wows.

A few gents hanging out at the truck.

Chatting after dinner.

These next three images are all very similar but i really like them all because you can see different people's faces in each shot.. Scroll fast it'll be like a sequence.

Some of the boys and I wandered off to our camp for a bit.

I think I look quite natty with the blue plate on my head. It could start a trend. Plus it was my dirty dinner plate so I was cleaning it at the same time.

Much fun here!

I got home from the Outdoor Retailer show this evening, & Heidi & I just looked at the latest photos & posts.

Great photos from Big Mike & Mouse, and great fun from all------but the cleaning the plate quip from Phylp-------is the best fun!

and the weather was warm & dry.

Wow! What an awesome group of fun loving friends! This should become an annual event!

Mike- I had a very extreme prolotherapy procedure on some ligaments deep inside my pelvis--ones which maintain correct alignment of the pelvis with the spine, as well as holding the sacrum in place so the SI joints "stay put." It required an injection deep into the ligaments using a 4" long fine gauge needle to inject powdered pumice in normal saline plus lidocaine to accomplish. I could barely walk for nearly 2 weeks afterwards, but am really feeling great for now. The cause of the problem was when I fell from one of my farm implements over year ago, and landed far too hard on my left leg which tore and stretched the ligament on the left side. Ugh! At least it's semi-permanently fixed (for now).

Check out: http://www.prolotherapy.com. The article on "The Biochemistry of Prolotherapy" in the menu was written by one of my old climbing partners from Boulder.

Just finished showing these photos to some friends in Wolkenstein/Selva Italy. This had to be the climbing/climbers event of the year!
