used to live in a dream home with walls but only stars for a ceiling and a few encircling trees scratching at the night sky. then I awakened. stirred from my haven. the home is still there, but the dream is different

I sipped whiskey with Alex Vertikoff and the editor of American Bungalo one evening in a remote snow covered cabin accessible only by skis..

Mister E, the Gamble House ain't exactly in Compton, know what I mean?

So I'm in the final negotiations on my dream houseboat...

Plenty of room to stretch out and snag some rays...

Intimate wardroom for those convivial dinners...

Nice cozy areas to curl up and read a book on finance...

my dream home, would be a combination of all of the best features [and none of the downsides- haha] of the dreams i've been fortunate enough to live so far. it'd be mobile, fast, cheap to operate, inconspicuous, able to carry quite a bit, and with highly flexible spatial potentials.

first dream i had was for a frito lay truck. something like this except with windows cut in the side and a pot belly stove with chimney sticking out the top:

couldn't afford the truck so the first manifestation was a volvo station wagon i bought for $1500 and lived out of for 6 mos while doing a solo tour of the western u.s.

next iteration was a 26' r.v. with cbr900 escape pod. lived full time with my partner in this for a couple of years including a 3 mos trip around mostly arizona and california.

as nice as it is to have the kitchen sink with you, downsized for the next round and lived out of a chev s10 for 10 months while travelling circuitously from the arctic ocean to panama and back to canuckistan.

more recently, i lived six months in a teepee during a winter construction project. living this close to the environment was both more romantic and as much a pain in the ass as i expected.

got the latest this last summer and have put on about 7000 km so far. street legal, 50 mpg, 140kph, carries all of my camping gear: main problem is it's only good for one.

i guess i'm still chasing the perfect frito lay truck… and am not sure what exactly the next iteration will be...

If you dream, dream big. Too big. Or don't dream at all.

My whole life, up to this point I had big(?) goals. I thought that if I achieved all of them, I would be happy for the rest of my life. I have achieved my last goal. I feel empty.
Now, should I learn how to live without a dream, or set new goals? I wish I had set my goals high enough to keep me busy for the rest of my life. It is not easy to reinvent yourself when you are old.

Think about it.

That's my message for the youngsters here.

No joke.

The empty cup is the state of the receptive, the lessons don't lessen with age...

Most never find that place.

Rejoice in it.

I like to road bike and I like to climb so having a house in the mountains or in some remote location, though affordable, doesn't interest me. For my desired lifestyle there are two good places to live. One is Boulder and the other is Silicon Valley(OK, Yosemite is close enough). Hey, I have houses in both locations so I am set. I guess for me it is more about my 'dream location' versus 'dream house.' You can build a pretty nice house pretty cheaply in an undesirable or remote location.

At first, it was just a dream.

But some dreams become real
