I think climbing has changed fundamentally over the years. Way back in the past

I think we self-selected to join a group of people who had some kind of athletic potential, maybe were analytic or good problem solvers, and were ok (or even liked) doing something different than the norm.

I think folks were good problem solvers but that is based on the Berkeley scene. I think many people were involved in math back in the day.

The way climbing has evolved it seems the people who choose to climb now are a pretty different bunch from 40 years ago.

I bet the demographic today is more of a general cross section of the population, maybe with a bit more athletic potential.
