I am so sorry for family and friends. My heart is with Sean, how devastating...
Glad to hear that yesterday his bros Jimmy Haden and Russ Mitrovich flew out to SLC to hang with him.

What terrible news. RIP Roberta. At least Stanley is okay. Oftentimes the passenger in a rollover is not so lucky. I'm sure this is scant consolation in light of his loss. Best wishes, be strong.

I spoke with Sean's family last night and want to share a few things. Sean is staying busy taking care of all of the arrangements to return Roberta back home. he will probably be leaving Tuesday and staying at least one week there in Brazil with them. I would like to hold off on setting a date for the memorial service for her friends until I find out exactly what he is doing, so that he may be there with us if he wishes so.
Also, Russel & Jimmy were held up in Reno trying to fly there, dbut by now should either be on the plane or already be there. Sean was excited that his friends would be there to help him, and that makes his family happy that he will have their support. Please keep Sean in your thoughts & prayers, he really will need our support & friendship through this. Also remember, it will take a long time to heal from this, so over the next year please support him in any way you can. His friends will make him strong again, just like Roberta would want him to be.

I wonder how many people swerve to miss a deer, or even a rabbit, and end up losing their own life....

"I wonder how many people swerve to miss a deer, or even a rabbit, and end up losing their own life.... "

I never even thought of this as a possibility until you said this. I was driving through Utah this January, coming back from a photo/climbing trip. I have never seen SO many deer and elk next to roads and highways. There was snow and sleet on this particular drive and a *constant* threat of deer and elk being on the road as I was seeing packs of them every few minutes. Crazy! Very stressful. Even on the loop, getting onto 15, there was a HUGE elk standing between the onramp and 15, which is a fast, large highway.

Another goes missing from our tribe, another of the inspiried and inspiring. Never met Roberta but I caught her vibe nontheless, from the second dregree of separation.

My history teacher told me about romantics and how those remembered as such often leave us "too soon." Their gift is of magic. You can't bottle it, but you can feel it. The energy is there for our breath, don't let it get away from you easily.

Another friend of mine was in a car accident last week, same thing... rolled the truck but he was lucky to survive. As I told his wife about Roberta she realized just how lucky she was to still have her husband with her, $18,000 truck ruined but he is still there next to her. Helps you put things into perspective a bit. She loved Roberta. When she climbed the Zodiac a few years ago with Ammon, they ran out of supplies. Roberta joined me, Jose Peyera and Stanford and we hiked tons of supplies from camp 4 up to the top. It was a beautiful day, with falcons soaring over & amazing views surrounding us. We laughed & laughed as we always do with her. When we made it to the top we created a disco light show for them on the wall with our headlamps & flashlights. We drank red wine & told stories & danced on the top. Jose even brought up a hula hoop & she loved it. Roberta & I talked about that day last week, the last day I saw her. I am so happy that I went to see her one more time that week, I stayed with her all night & we had so much fun. I actually had a easy schedule that week & was able to spend almost evey day & night with her in El Portal. Life is just too short.... don't waste a chance to be with the ones who mean the most to you. I am so glad I didn't.

I am so upset, angry, can't believe this is happening. I got an email from Ansel Evans today saying he had a friend Roberta die in Utah. Of course my thoughts immediately went to our Brazil Roberta, but I thought for sure she wasn't here yet...that she wouldn't be in Utah. I knew we had seen Sean in El Portal just a week or two ago...

I even noticed how I had something today from a client Roberta, so see, maybe Roberta would be a common enough name that Tom's email wouldn't be about our Roberta.

Don't know wny I didn't call immediately to find out.

Right now I just can't even believe this. Not to see her again. Not to climb. Roberta and I had a big plan to climb the Shield this year. Two women. Strong, alive on the rock.

It just isn't right. Isn't fair. I am not ready for this...

I have video of Roberta, not sure if I have more photos. Trying to call you but the line is busy...

We should have a memorial in the fall, like for Erica, as more of our seasonal friends will be back?

Love you,

Didn't know this woman but clearly she was something special. It has been a very sad year - Sue Fear, Sue Nott, Karen McNeill - and now Roberta. They all leave us many lessons and turn our thoughts to important things. We all walk, climb, drive, live a fine line and there is not certainty that we will rise for tomorrow's sun - so go for it with passion - live each day fully and make it count. And inspire others with acts of deliberate kindness.

Thanks Jenn for sharing your thoughts, caring and passion for a friend. Keep her spirit close and honor her. Looks like the master upstairs has his sights on assembling one hell of a climbing team! Will be one hell of a party when we all meet again - and we will.

Jennifer,
I am Sean's father's cousin in Florida. If you are in touch with him, please tell him he's been in my thoughts and prayers since I heard of the accident.

I didn't know Roberta, sadly, but know if she was special to Sean she must have been a very special lady. Love to all who loved her.

hey jen its walt... i found out a few days ago sport climbing in jackson. i just got done warming up and was sitting belaying when i heard a couple of exum guides talking about a friend of theres that had just passed in a car accident. they uttered the name roberta, my heart droped, somehow i knew. i asked if it was roberta nunes and they assured me that it was. my heart sank and sadness over took me again. almost 1 year from when erica died, now roberta. the women in climbing touch us more than anyone knows. they bring beauty and delicatness to a world of thuggish neanderthals. they keep our testostrone in check and put us in our place when we think were some kind of bad ass. roberta was with out a doubt a bad ass. one of the strongest females on the sceen. she was omnipresent in the climbing world and she will truely be missed. the climbing world will go on with out her, but never be the same. women like her and erica make climbing what it is. its a life style and a family and the women are our mothers and sisters. they inspire and drive us to the next goal. I can't even begin to say how much she will be missed.
To the monkeys... im new at this losing friends thing and it f*#kin sucks. be safe out there.

Walt
