There is no way to express the loss of my best friend from Brazil......

Yesterday morning Roberta Nunes and Sean Leary were driving to Utah when they were involved in a terrible car accident. While Roberta was driving, she encountered a sharp turn and rolled the truck by accident. After serious head & neck injuries she was taken to the Provo Hospital where she passed away. My heart goes out to her, her family and of course her friends who loved her as much as I. Roberta is my sister, although not by blood, but even deeper. I will never forget her, as none of you will. Sean has survived the accident with minor injuries and is heartbroken by all of this. He has asked to direct all calls and e-mails to me for the next few days while he is trying to get things in perspective and trying to make arrangements to bring her body home to her family. If you want any further detals please contact me, I will be trying to get as much information as I can from Sean & his family. Please send your thoughts, wishes and prayers to Sean, his family and Roberta's family through this terrible time.

Friends are what will get all of us through this, and it also reminds us of just how precious a life can be. Roberta has always taught me to live my life to the fullest, to laugh and laugh and that life is what you make it, and not to waste it. I will never forget her.

I love you Roberta, always. Jenny

Jenn,
I'm so sorry to hear this sad news. I didn't know Roberta, but my heart goes out to all her friends and family.
Does Sean need any help locally? I know Sean, he is a Yosemite friend, and my family lives in Provo. I'll call you in the morning to see if they can help in any way.

Thanks, I'll need help. In advance I would like people to also start thinking of a fund that we can get together to help cover the costs of returning her back to Brazil. I will make the arrangements if needed. Please email me if you would like to help in any way. Again, I am sorry guys. jk

Hopefully it's OK to borrow Al Dude's image from the Uber-thread.

I don't know what to say. I ran into Roberta at the Mobil Station near 395 on Monday evening. She told me about their travel plans to drive east from there. I told her I was lucky to be the last to see her on her way out...

She was, and I'm sure is, a very special being. I'm so sorry for the loss for our community, for Sean, and Jenn.

I am in the process with the help from Marci of getting a fund set up in the park for Roberta's family to help the costs of bringing her back home to them in Brazil. I also will be trying to organize a memorial service for her and will let you all know as soon as I can where and when it will be held. Please feel free to prepare anything you would like to say at the service, whether it is a story about how you met her, or an adventure you may have experienced with her or a poem...it would be nice to hear from eachother. I also would like anyone who has some photos of her with her friends to share. If anyone else can think of ways to help, please contact me as soon as possible. I am working until Friday, but will be checking email & messages often. jk

I spoke with Sean's family last night and want to share a few things. Sean is staying busy taking care of all of the arrangements to return Roberta back home. he will probably be leaving Tuesday and staying at least one week there in Brazil with them. I would like to hold off on setting a date for the memorial service for her friends until I find out exactly what he is doing, so that he may be there with us if he wishes so.
Also, Russel & Jimmy were held up in Reno trying to fly there, dbut by now should either be on the plane or already be there. Sean was excited that his friends would be there to help him, and that makes his family happy that he will have their support. Please keep Sean in your thoughts & prayers, he really will need our support & friendship through this. Also remember, it will take a long time to heal from this, so over the next year please support him in any way you can. His friends will make him strong again, just like Roberta would want him to be.

"I wonder how many people swerve to miss a deer, or even a rabbit, and end up losing their own life.... "

I never even thought of this as a possibility until you said this. I was driving through Utah this January, coming back from a photo/climbing trip. I have never seen SO many deer and elk next to roads and highways. There was snow and sleet on this particular drive and a *constant* threat of deer and elk being on the road as I was seeing packs of them every few minutes. Crazy! Very stressful. Even on the loop, getting onto 15, there was a HUGE elk standing between the onramp and 15, which is a fast, large highway.

Another goes missing from our tribe, another of the inspiried and inspiring. Never met Roberta but I caught her vibe nontheless, from the second dregree of separation.

My history teacher told me about romantics and how those remembered as such often leave us "too soon." Their gift is of magic. You can't bottle it, but you can feel it. The energy is there for our breath, don't let it get away from you easily.

Another friend of mine was in a car accident last week, same thing... rolled the truck but he was lucky to survive. As I told his wife about Roberta she realized just how lucky she was to still have her husband with her, $18,000 truck ruined but he is still there next to her. Helps you put things into perspective a bit. She loved Roberta. When she climbed the Zodiac a few years ago with Ammon, they ran out of supplies. Roberta joined me, Jose Peyera and Stanford and we hiked tons of supplies from camp 4 up to the top. It was a beautiful day, with falcons soaring over & amazing views surrounding us. We laughed & laughed as we always do with her. When we made it to the top we created a disco light show for them on the wall with our headlamps & flashlights. We drank red wine & told stories & danced on the top. Jose even brought up a hula hoop & she loved it. Roberta & I talked about that day last week, the last day I saw her. I am so happy that I went to see her one more time that week, I stayed with her all night & we had so much fun. I actually had a easy schedule that week & was able to spend almost evey day & night with her in El Portal. Life is just too short.... don't waste a chance to be with the ones who mean the most to you. I am so glad I didn't.

I am so upset, angry, can't believe this is happening. I got an email from Ansel Evans today saying he had a friend Roberta die in Utah. Of course my thoughts immediately went to our Brazil Roberta, but I thought for sure she wasn't here yet...that she wouldn't be in Utah. I knew we had seen Sean in El Portal just a week or two ago...

I even noticed how I had something today from a client Roberta, so see, maybe Roberta would be a common enough name that Tom's email wouldn't be about our Roberta.

Don't know wny I didn't call immediately to find out.

Right now I just can't even believe this. Not to see her again. Not to climb. Roberta and I had a big plan to climb the Shield this year. Two women. Strong, alive on the rock.

It just isn't right. Isn't fair. I am not ready for this...

Didn't know this woman but clearly she was something special. It has been a very sad year - Sue Fear, Sue Nott, Karen McNeill - and now Roberta. They all leave us many lessons and turn our thoughts to important things. We all walk, climb, drive, live a fine line and there is not certainty that we will rise for tomorrow's sun - so go for it with passion - live each day fully and make it count. And inspire others with acts of deliberate kindness.

Thanks Jenn for sharing your thoughts, caring and passion for a friend. Keep her spirit close and honor her. Looks like the master upstairs has his sights on assembling one hell of a climbing team! Will be one hell of a party when we all meet again - and we will.

hey jen its walt... i found out a few days ago sport climbing in jackson. i just got done warming up and was sitting belaying when i heard a couple of exum guides talking about a friend of theres that had just passed in a car accident. they uttered the name roberta, my heart droped, somehow i knew. i asked if it was roberta nunes and they assured me that it was. my heart sank and sadness over took me again. almost 1 year from when erica died, now roberta. the women in climbing touch us more than anyone knows. they bring beauty and delicatness to a world of thuggish neanderthals. they keep our testostrone in check and put us in our place when we think were some kind of bad ass. roberta was with out a doubt a bad ass. one of the strongest females on the sceen. she was omnipresent in the climbing world and she will truely be missed. the climbing world will go on with out her, but never be the same. women like her and erica make climbing what it is. its a life style and a family and the women are our mothers and sisters. they inspire and drive us to the next goal. I can't even begin to say how much she will be missed.
To the monkeys... im new at this losing friends thing and it f*#kin sucks. be safe out there.

I met Roberta years ago in Argentina in the Frey. My Spanish wasn't that good at the time (not to mention my Portuguese!), and her English was almost non-existent, so we had to communicate through sign language and basic Spanish. It was a blast to climb with her - she had a fire and a completely unselfconscious passion for life and climbing. Such people are very rare. So much energy, talent and strength in such a small package! I have never forgotten her over the years and have often looked back on those days in the Frey and smiled.

To those of you who knew her better than I, please accept my condolences for your loss. I know the world is a much better place for her having been here. I will not forget her!

My name is Erin Leary, I am Sean (Stanely) Leary's sister. Roberta and Sean were headed out to Utah to visit my fiance and me when the accident happened. Fortunately we don't live far from where Roberta was life-flighted to and all of us were able to be with her at the end. Sean is currently in Brazil with Roberta's family and as you can imagine this whole thing has been hard on Sean as well as hers and his family and friends. We have two memorial funds set up to help with all of the expenses from the accident, as well as for transporting her home to Brazil. If you would like to contribute, please read the information below:

Contributions to the El Dorado Savings Bank Fund can be made by check, payable to The Roberta Nunes Memorial Fund at:

El Dorado Savings Bank
P.O. Box 520
Pine Grove, CA 95665

You can drop a check off at any branch location. El Dorado Savings Bank has branches in CA and NV that can be located by calling 1-800-874-9779 or www.eldoradosavings.com

Contributions to the Yosemite Credit Union Fund can be made by check, payable to Yosemite Credit Union with Roberta Nunes Fund written in the memo/for area of the check and sent to:

Yosemite Credit Union
P.O. Box 576
Yosemite, CA 95389

You may also stop by the Credit Union in person M-F 11:30-3:30. It is located inside the Yosemite Valley Post Office. Look for a small wooden door at the west end of the post office. The phone number to the Credit Union is (209) 372-4750.

Thank you to all of Sean and Roberta's friends who have called or emailed. If any of you have stories about Roberta and pictures of her that you would like to share, please email them to me at leary_erin@hotmail.com. I would like to try and put a book of them together for her friends and family. If English is not a strong language for you, still feel free to contribute. If you can have a friend send a translation with your story it would help me to print it in both languages...if not, I can try to find friends who can translate it. Thank you again to everyone for their love and support.

A friend passed along an email about Roberta. I am living on the east coast now and am a bit out of the loop.

Roberta was an amazing woman. I first met her in the valley and we were all so impressed by her fun spirit, generosity, and intelligence that we let her camp in the SAR site. I remember her incredible excitement for all parts of life…climbing, friends, and her boyfriend.

We climbed many times together. I remember an amazing day on the Moratorium to the East Buttress. We foolishly didn’t bring any water for the climb in summer and ended up behind 5 parties on the east buttress. Although it was a lengthy outing and we were somewhat beaten down by the heat, she joked at every belay and we laughed our way up most of the climb.

I will always remember a trip that we all took to the east side. She was very excited because she had not seen her boyfriend in a while. There were about twenty of us including the Brits, Aussie’s, German’s, and usually American crew. Unfortunately, it would be the last time that I would see Jose P or Roberta.

I will always remember being filled with their strength, humility, and honesty.

I don’t know how to attach pictures to this site so I have passed them along to Jen and Erin and hopefully they will post them. I have other photographers to thank for these pictures although I can’t remember who exactly took the pictures. I believe Heinz Zak is responsible for passing at least one of these pictures along in the past.
