RIP, Mr. Cale.
I saw him in Ballard in the early 90's. He played too slow for most people there, and they kept leaving. I kept moving up as they left until I was in the first row, and grooved on his playing the whole show.

RIP, JJ.
A question for serious Cale fans: I thought that a long time back, I heard a fine cover by JJ of Knockin' on Heaven's Door. But I can find no digital evidence that such a recording exists. Was it just my imagination?

Wife and I were just listening to JJ Cale last night. His shuffle blues guitar and pleasant voice are (were!) so smooth and cool. (Don't know about knockin', Chiloe, but seems reasonable. And, would love to hear it.)

Saw him play Boulder Theater about 20 years ago. His songs rely on such restraint, was not expecting much from a live show. But he actually made some of his songs actually sound better, richer, clearer, more subtle than the studio versions. Without any discernible effort. Never seen any other musician or band pull that off. Amazing show, to a packed house.
Aside from his vocal phrasing, he was the master, on his guitar, of utilizing the spaces between the notes.
Says much that so many other musicians play his songs. They may get the words right but they always get the songs wrong.
RIP

Oh No!
I am truly sad, JJ was one of my all time favorites.
One of the great unsung heros of rock & roll.

The best way I can describe JJ's music, as he played it, is smooth and infectious.
Had the priveledge to see him live in a small venue once. The crowd was milling around getting aquainted, getting drunk, no one seemed to noticed the little man in a t-shirt and jeans fiddling with the guitar on stage, even when he began tuning it. It wasn't until he started rocking a jam, in that totally unpretentious style he played in (it is positively hypnotic), that people finally recognized him and gave him a hand.
People just sat and watched through the first set. He even dropped a few hints about dancing. By the end of the show the tables had all been pushed back and not a single person in that bar was not dancing.
Take a minute to listen to him bend the strings on this one:

Just listened to his first album three days ago. I hadn't heard "Naturally"in years. Crazy Mama is still my favorite. I never tire of hearing that lazy drawl and great guitar. All on two cords!
RIP.

I have been a big JJ Cale fan for over four decades and play him at home more than all my other favorite artists combined.
I just love having a puff along with a beer, grillin' some yard bird and groovin' to JJ Cale!
RIP JJ Cale.
