This is the best of the USA.

Guy lives in a van with no particular job, is relatively happy, but sees the world could use some help. Leverages his fame to do something about.

I'd like to see some meaningful involvement beyond name.

There are thousands of social entrepreneurs all over the world with equally admirable intentions. I work with a few of them.

What you should be looking for are measurements of social impact before conferring legitimacy or credibility.

I'm sure Alex is a really nice guy with a really big heart, but there are many organizations and people out there serving others in smart ways (read, SMART, like in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMART_criteria);. I'm fairly sure that none of that is beyond Mr. Honnold's capabilities to look at himself.

There have been many other very famous people who have done more than add their names to a long list of good ideas.

(Mea culpa, but this is one topic I am in a position to add some substance to.)

From my experience the people in the world that need the most help do not need solar panels.
They need immunisations, seeds, chickens, pigs and goats.

Those that are critical answer me this. What do you do to help those in need that are family nor friend on a regular basis.

That's what I thought....

@MikeL:

Seems like you're bagging on Alex's attempt to help out. Perhaps instead of being a negative voice that says, "Others with bigger names/pockets/experience are already doing this, so get out of the way," why don't you jump on board with Alex to help him succeed?

(Mea culpa, but this is one topic I am in a position to add some substance to.)

Please do add substance--I'm sure Alex, who appears to have done more than just add his name, would love to hear about it. And don't be a SMART-alec as you do so.

Cheers,

Left my life in CO to move to FL and take care of my aging parents, spent 45K to get my Mom in detox due to all the addictive drugs the doctors prescribed to her and 35K for my Dad's medicine for heart and dementia issues. They don't have adequate health insurance because they were artists and teachers and did not expect to live this long.

I wanted to buy them a trip to Paris for their 57 anniversary but my Mom said it was better to spend the 10K buying goats for families in Africa.

What have you done recently?

Goatboy:

I said other than family many of us jump through hoops for those we love whom have helped us along the way.

Good on you but that is not charity that is family...

... be aware that Tides Foundation is very left leaning and known for funding radical causes.

blahblah, thanks for pointing that out! Spreading the word that "less is more" through an organization that "emphasizes community, ecological sustainability, and a celebration of non-material values" is certainly radical in the US. As soon as his donation page is up, I'll be adding to it.

We need to do everything we can to counter things like the Heritage Foundation, which is an extremely right-leaning organization that delivers misinformation on things like climate change and tobacco.

Ain't that right Mr. blah "We're just not too worried about it. Capice?" blah.

McCfly, reading comprehension failure, the 10K went to buy goats and chickens for family's in Africa. Goats provide milk for them to sell and chickens 2 lay eggs and take to the markets thereby providing them an income.

Wow goatboy, that is admirable.

Through what organization did you get the goats to the people?

Also, there are many avenues with which folks can help other folks. Don't bag on Alex's projects that help to get solar panels to people. Electricity can do things like pump water and, as the page says, replace kerosene lamps that cause health issues.

We used local friends through the UN to provide the livestock because we knew where the money was going. I don't trust charities because they are mostly self serving grandstanding.

Thanks k-man, your opinion is always appreciated.
