I'm a bit astounded that so many posting here have no concept whatsoever how easily silenced abused women and children are. That's the same mentality that thinks prostitutes must "want" to be walking the streets.

I don't know if someone should be grateful for naivety at that level (to have never had a life experience that would give them an inkling that is how some people operate) or mortified.

"It's some more girls up in that house."

"They go up in there, 30-40 deep, and when they came out was just astonishing."

"You got some big testicles to pull this off, bro! 'Cause we see this dude Every Day!"

"We eat ribs and whatnot and listen to Salsa music."

"Nothing exciting about him ... well ... until today. Hahaha."

"I knew something was wrong when a little pretty white girl ran into a black man's arms. Dead giveaway. Dead giveaway."

"I'm eaten my MacDonald's"

My question was somewhat rhetorical. I know its primarily a psychological entrapment. But yes, its hard for me to get my head around a mindset that wouldn't fight back or try to escape, for ten years. And at least so far there is no evidence of threats of killing little brothers, or of being chained to the toilet.

Suppose its not un-similar to young men who join the army with good intentions, only to find they later have to choose between killing civilians or going to prison themselves for insubordination. First they mess with your mind, ....

By the way, I've known a few prostitutes in my day (not as a client), and none of them were in the business against their will. They mostly just preferred earning $100 an hour to $7 an hour at McDonalds.

(no, not as a pimp. lol)

Charles Ramsey is a friggin national treasure. And a hero. Says it all like it is:

This story is going to get very dark in the days and weeks to come when we find out more about the ordeal those women went through in the last decade. Glad someone stepped up to investigate the noises from the house and did something about it.

Wtf Patrick Sawyer?

Michaeld, I was being flippant to Ron's flippant remarks about the trio of bad guys being Democrats. I guess I failed if my attempt at humor confused you.

One of the many sad things about this is that these poor women were taken to the hospital and now and will now start their new lives heavily in debt thanks to our great healthcare system...

although I +1 the broken health care system comment, they happily won't stay broke for long. Let outside twice in ten years....what a gift from the gods a simple walk through a forest in the rain would be.

You hear about fund raisers for all kinds of things- from this to the Boston bombing. Yet I never hear about the medical or insurance industry ever donating anything. I know individual doctors do but not the corporations.

One of the women is still hospitalized which means she is into them for tens of thousands of dollars and she will not be covered by medicade simply because she could not have been enroled yet. if she was in the system before her abduction she is denied benifits now because she would have missed reviews of her income status etc and been sent a letter to her telling her that benefits were now denied due to not filling out the paperwork.

Oh please. What the victims went through is beyond any of our comprehension, but no need to try to exploit their situation to make some tangential point about our (admittedly screwed) health care system, when you don't have the slightest idea how their financial situation will shake out.
I believe Jaycee Dugard's done very well financially--hope these victims are fortunate enough to do the same.

I was listening to VPR on my way home from work. i heard that one of the victims was still hospitalized and it simply flashed in my mind that she was going to get stuck with a huge medical bill on top of all of her other trauma.

Once they read ST and learn money is the only important thing out here, who knows? They may decide to break back into that house.

Under The Banner of Heaven (Jon Kraukauer) gives some interesting analysis of why Elizabeth Smart fell victim to a whack nutjob. Good read about Mormon history.

I wonder if American readers want a "good read" or an "accurate reading" of Mormon history...

Under the Banner of Heaven is unadorned attempt to tether the Lafferty Murders to mormon tenets. It fails...

Being defectors from a heretic sect of the FLDS, the Lafferty brothers were four times removed from veritable LDS membership.

I'm dismayed reading posts considering sensationalism and fragmentary portrayal as history. I would invite anyone with unalloyed interest in mormon history to read more complete and substantiated chronicles and leave the expose' writing on the lower shelf.

I give you huge commendation for your sense of humor, sir...

You're sense of comedy on forum is even more acute than in class.
