Coke and Whores!?!!Not !!!!

Unless you've been living inside a brick you know BIG MIKE had an awful snowboarding crash & broke his back.

He's on the road to recovery & has a great cheerleading team but.......

.....this unplanned visit in hospital has obviously strained their finances.

**
SO HERE IS THE FUNDRAISER and AUCTION if you wanna jump on in.**

Straight up donations to Mike's PayPal account:
m_cowper at yahoo dot com

AUCTION ITEMS CAN BE POSTED HERE TOO
My suggestion for that is to post a photo/s of the item plus a background on it ( e.g. THISSIZ a WOODEN WEDGE used on the FA of the GRAND.......or thissiz an AUTOGRAFFED copy of the old ANDERS 1980 guidebook!!!! ) as well as a time-frame on the auction ( five to seven days really seems to work well ). At the end of the auction, you send yer thing to the winner and the winner forks over the largess to the paypal account! ( or sends a cheque to Big Mike ! )

Watch out fer a painting going on the block in the next few days. Yes !!!!

And always stay tuned to http://www.supertopo.com/climbers-forum/2079402/Sending-Big-Mike-some-good-vibes for the latest on Big Mike's recovery.

Final note: this thread was agreed to by both Mike 'n' Sandra.

I'm a window washer and I'm currently unable to work although most of my contracts don't come up until spring. At this point we still have no idea, but I would imagine it will be at least July until I am back to lifting ladders. I will have a couple guys working for me starting in may hopefully but I also need to be able to pay them.

Sandra is the one who is currently spending more money on gas coming down here all the time and missing shifts here or there to come help me with my recovery. I don't have any extended health so after I get out if here any equipment I need to get around will be covered by me, and a pass at the recreation center so I can continue my rehab.

I also expect to be coming back to gf at least once a week for follow up therapy once I am well enough to graduate. So extra gas for my truck, assuming I will still be able to drive.

Please, if you are in dire straights yourself don't even consider it. I will figure out a way to thank those who can, maybe some prints or something.

Anyways thanks for your consideration and ALL YOUR SUPPORT SO FAR!!!

I love the taco and this communities heart is larger than any of us can conceive!!

I'm in. I've never actually met the guy but he seems like a great person and everyone needs some help from time to time.

I'm located in San Jose and am a professional bicycle mechanic. The going rate for a tune up around here is $75-$90. If you donate $50 to Big Mike I will do a full tune up on your bike. I have 7 years of shop experience and run my own mechanic business out of my garage / turned bike shop. Get your bike dialed and help a fellow taco member.

I think I might be able to help with an auction item. Here's the deal:

Quite a few years ago, my first novel was shortlisted for the Boardman-Tasker prize for mountain literature. I thought it was a thriller about sex and drugs and rock and ice, but apparently it was literature to those Brits, and wound up taking second prize. (It was also shortlisted for a mystery novel prize in Canada.)

It was translated into six languages, anthologized, serialized, and if course eventally relegated to history.

But I managed to score a bunch of copies of the original hard cover edition, and I've still got them. Anyone who wants to help Big Mike and Sandra can contribute to the cause, and get a damn fine read in return. But no cheap'n'cheesy low bids to get a book. Give enough to make it hurt you and help them (whatever that amount is).

I'm sitting in the airport in Las Vegas right now, and won't be able to follow this thread much for a few days, but I know this amazing superhero climber chick in Vancouver named Tami, and I'm asking her to handle this for me while I'm out groveling up things that I wouldn't have given a second thought a decade or two ago.

Ok. So you can donate directly to me by going http://www.paypal.com/ and going to the send money link.

My email is m_cowper@yahoo.com.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I really didn't want to have to write this post begging for money.

but then I realized that I would be selling you prints! Which would make me a professional photographer. Who might hopefully have some images posted some mags real soon.

So I'm down.

Peace. ;)

Edit to add print info

Ok so, I got my first donation of 30$. By Jon Beck Thanks Jon!!! I won't post your name here unless you want me to, shoot me a pm. So here is the deal.

5 bucks gets you a wall paper of your choice and size. (Max 1600x800)
30 bucks gets you one 6x9 print with no watermark
50 for two.
75 for four.
100 for six.

If you want bigger ones, I can do large panos ect, I'll have to find out pricing for prints and price accordingly.

Eventually I'll set up a webpage, but for now I have my Flickr page with over 1500 images that I have posted here on supertopo.

It's here http://www.flickr.com/photos/63748573@N07/

Ill try and organize it into sets a bit better, but for now you can try and remember when I posted it and go back to that date, or if you're having trouble finding a certain image, shoot me an email!

Once you figure it out, let me know via email.

It will take me awhile to get them printed and sent off, once I get my hands on my originals again which are at home in whistler.

Thanks alot for all your help!!!

All right... here's what I can do.

Send Mike $40 and you get a free night at a SushiFest of your choice....

Also send me $30 for your second night (so this is limited to those buying in for two nights).

In fact.... I'll do this three times.... One spot for each SushiFest this year (or next year - but only one per event).

And yes... SushiFest is normally $30... so... if you're in for two nights for the one in 5 weeks you can empty your wallet even further and finish reserving your spot. /end cheap shot

Vortex

Exciting climbing and drug adventure set in the Cascades. This thriller was inspired by a true story which has become part of mountaineering folklore. Two climbers on Mount Redoubt, on the US-Canadian border, stumble across a crashed light aircraft with a dead pilot, an injured survivor and a cargo of cocaine. Hardcover, DJ, New. Winner of the 1990 Boardman Tasker Award,

San Francisco narcotics cop William Holley has Walter Matheson under surveillance, waiting for the cocaine dealerto make an error on one of his smuggling runs across the Canadian border. He plans an arrest when Matheson hires a light aircraft to run a key shipment over the Cascade mountains into Washington State. But the plane crashes and Matheson turns up a week later in San Francisco denying all knowledge of the affair.

Climbers Alex Townsend and Gordon Wilson are drawn into the mystery and as police and the criminals close in, Alex, Gordon and Alex's girlfriend Linda are trapped in an uncontrollable vortex of guilt, beyond their control.

David Harris unfolds his story with economy and drive, positioning and characters in cunning juxtaposition in a tense story set against the cities and mountains of western America and Canada. The book first appeared in the omnibus One Step in the Clouds and received instant acclaim.

Guaranteed to have been used extensively on the wall. A bit of Squamish history, well used, not one of these pristine things that Chessler sells. Bids start at $15, end Saturday, March 16, whenever I check the email in the morning.

this is NOT DONE!!!

it is not a multi layer oil upon oil, etc, though...

it's FEET are grasping the branches...
it still looks ODD at that point...

this is just the basic set up, above...
will pretty much be the same, but a few more details
on the bird...
and perhaps the branches, a bit,
and a last minute touch-up...

ahhh, shucks, could NOT help my self, i just don't
like to do a pic in one setting, with oil... :(

so i am putting detail layer over this...
THE EYES, face, a few branches, etc...

otherwise, they always seem like they are calling for more, to me...

well...

For anyone who wants to donate anything to auction for Big Mike, but does want not to deal with actually auctioning it, I can help out.

The SuperTopo warehouse is set up for taking photos, packing and shipping stuff etc and we have the ebay process fairly streamlined. SuperTopo will pay the ebay fees, shipping costs and time it takes to list the items. I will put Big Mikes PayPal address in the auction so the $$$ will go directly to him.

I have this longer term idea of starting a non profit that focuses just on running small auctions for causes like this that you can read about here http://www.supertopo.com/a/SuperTopo-Guide-To-Online-Auctions-For-Causes-and-Non-Profits/a11640n.html

Crux would be getting me the items. Shipping them to me would be too expensive and a pain in the ass unless your item is really small and valuable. So this is probably just for SuperTopo folks who live close to San Rafael CA and can drop off.

Contact me if interested [my first name]@supertopo.com

To see what makes a good ebay auction item, read through my article or in summary: anything worth more than $50 that fits in a box that is 24 x 24 x 24 or smaller. How do you find out the eBay/auction value of something? Go to http://ebay.com and enter your item name into the search box. Next, scroll down the left column, to "Show Only" and check the box "Completed listings." The numbers with green results actually sold (red prices did not sell because they were likely over priced).

Any old patagonia clothing sells at surprisingly good prices.

Dick Culbert: A Climber's Guide to the Coastal Rangers of British Columbia (International Border to Nass River)". First edition, blue cloth. Inscribed by Culbert opposite title page. Very fine but for previous owner's signature on front end paper. No fading, no bumping.

As will most copies that show up on the market, this copy lacks the separate envelope of 8 maps (all now obsolete) hand-drawn by Dick's friends. If the bidding goes high enough, I'll throw in one of my sets of such maps. Otherwise, I'll throw in photocopies.

First edition of what is still the only guide ever to the BC Coast Mountains. Bruce Fairley wrote "It remains to this day probably the fines achievement in mountain guidebook writing ever accomplished, for it sought to outline the access access and climbing routes for one of the greatest mountain ranges in the world". That's arguable, but there's no argument that it's a very fine achievement.

The book contains 12 pages on rock climbing at Squamish (written by me). Thus it's the first published guide to Squamish and of interest to historians not only of the Coast Mountains, Waddington area, and such, but to those interested in Squamish history.

Chessler and others have copies for sale from $40 (crappy shape) to $300 (nice shape). Chessler has a copy of the second edition, signed by Fred Beckey, for $150. I have never seen a copy signed by Culbert offered for sale before.

Bidding starts at $100 and ends Saturday March 16, in the morning when I check my email. All proceeds to the Big Mike fund.

EDIT: note ending date change

Hello All you beautiful amazing people!!! This is SANDRA...i'm on home laptop and silly SuperTopo won't allow me to sign out of Mikes account.

I can't express how grateful I am that we've had so much help so far...
I was just adding up how much gas I've had to spend so far going between Whistler and Vancouver. Four times in the last 12 days = $180 + $25 I gave to Tash (mike's sister) for driving us around the city the first 2 days post accident since i had come down to Vancouver via Ambulance with Mike and didn't have my own car. At first i was like hmmm, i feel kinda weird having people donate to Mike but now I'm relieved that there's a bit of financial help. I know that Mike's going to need a fair bit of money for post-GF Strong rehab/physio when he's gets home to Whistler, plus any equipment he may require to live as independently as possible upon arriving home.

So just wanted to say THANK YOU for all your help and for taking the time to get this going. I'm really truly blown away by the generosity.

Gotta get my butt to work but will post again soon,
Love to all,
Sandra

OK here are 12 philo 'toons for your fundraising pleasure.
Having been in a similar mess a bit over a year ago I know every dollar counts.
Let's help Big Mike out. I wish I could do more.

#1; Hoh Man.

#2; Generic Crap Bivy.

#3; What do you mean no more rope?

#4; Sh#t and Pitch.

#5; Tuna Can.

#6; Say What.

#7; Another fine mess.

#8; Philbert's dilema.

#9; Hueco Thanx.

#10; Cajun Style.

#11; Indecent Exposure.

#12; Sleep Tight.

After I said I would sell the originals I remembered that most all of them are drawn on the backs of letters I wrote. Fortunately I was able to re-gather them years ago which is how they ended up in Robbie's Black Canyon Guide book.
So I am proposing to sign a limited number of prints for the fundraiser.
I know you all can just take the unsigned ones for free right off the inturdnet, but imagine if you were the one injured and in need. What do you say to a nominal fee of $10 each or three for $25 for signed 'toons. All proceeds to go to this fund raiser for Big Mike.

And here is my painting of the Painted Wall at Dawn in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison.
it dimensions are 22" X 28" and it is an original oil.

I offer it up to auction off for Big Mike.
Opening bid of $40 from Powder.
second bid; $120 by Jim Brennan. Thank you Jim.
Current bid; $150 by Bruce Kay. Thank you Bruce.

Who will make a counter bid for Big Mike on the Painted Wall painting?

Which brings the total so far to $230.

Thank you Jim that is awesome. I hope you don't mind if I keep the auction going for a little while in hopes of getting more $ to Big Mike.

How does it sound if I keep it going til next Sunday?

If No one wants signed copies of the already existent 'toons I have another thought.
Folks could bid on having me do an original climbing cartoon of them and their climbing adventures or misadventures as the case may be. All proceeds to oh course go to the fundraising efforts..

Now beyond all that, there are many awesome items to bid on. Lets get the dosh flowing. Being injured and unable to work is very, very costly.

IMHO Tricouni'sincredible book should bring in $500 at least. And Tami hasn't yet posted up her great art. So keep it bumped and moving.
Cheers.

hey there say, sandra, mike, and all...

my painting is nearly done and will be posted up,
perhaps tonight, or tomorrow...

you can look back a few pages and see it now...

it is only 11 by 14, as that was the only canvas i had available,
but it is a very nice oil...

i don't know if i will be able to afford the postage, though,
as i get tapped out early, by the end of the month, so
hopefully someone will still bid on it, anyway, :)

will post more details, tonight, :)

Absolutely sure. But they all look pretty much alike, don't they? I can't remember what sort of tape marking I had on most of mine; I changed it a couple of times, I know. This particular one was obviously overdriven a time or two.

here's my 11 by 14 oil, on canvas...

opening it for $75.00...

HOPE it will be just what someone's been needing...

it MAY BE an heirloom someday:
it is from the sister of chappy--well known rock climber...

OH--AND, neice of the late ellen walters, of the cleveland museum of natural history, in ohio, :)

THERE, ;) that ought to do it, :))

for now, :)

i do not how to do all this, so just either email me or mike...

IF anyone should want it and it is taken, and you want to bid,
then we will go from there...

it IS not very larger, remember... so it may not bring any
more than that... :)
but:
it's a 'well pitched ball', :)

edit:
if i remember right, when i send these as gifts,
postage is about 8 bucks? to 10 bucks, depending
on the boxes i get...

i just only have a saved amount to live on this month,
so i can't pay postage, :(

BUT--if mike gets the money now, and
YOU CAN TRUST ME...

i CAN DO THE POSTAGE in april, i will set it aside, from
my regular needs... >:D

its not a painting - its an el gypo lithograph print. Just so you know. Thats why its going cheap.

So just to be clear.

The Painted wall IS an original Oil, the first I've painted in more than 2 decades.
Current bid $170 by Bruce Kay.

AND as it so happens the Damn fine Mess 'toon does not have a personal letter on the flip side but rather another 'toon. Side B of this historic record is the original of Philbert's Dilema.
I know exactly what it's like to be in dire need and realize that like Big Mike any of us can go from vibrant stoke to wheel chair in a heartbeat.
I would let the ORIGINAL go for a good cause, BUT the Dollar Donation would have to be substantially higher than $25 for a signed print. Or is my ego getting in the way.

With all due respect to the wonderful crazy outbidders out there I think I will stick to the plan and keep the auction going till Midnight on Sun 3/17. So come on Clan kick it up for a busted brother.

Woah now! You'll be happy you held on to your cash till today! Up for bidding are two (2,deux,II,>1 and <3) semi-vintage mountaineering axes to make your collection complete.

You probably thought that by having Ed Wymper's alpenstock from the FA of the Matterhorn, and Maurice's from that French picnic on Annapurna, that your collection was at it's pinnacle. But why haven't the babes (or dudes) been knockin' down your door? I'll tell you why: You don't own a MSR Tomahawk, or a Forrest Neve. Don't dispair! No need to hang yourself with that overpriced braided cord you got from Chessler. You have one more chance. Not only could you own these inspiring pieces of history, and help out Big Mike, but you might get some action too. (Not sure if Mike is supplying that last part. You'll have to discuss it with him after you win the bidding.)

First up is a very fine Forrest Neve mountaineering axe. It shows almost no signs of use. Just a few paint scratches. Was probably bought by some poser just to hang above the mantle. It has never had a file taken to any part of it. It's that minty! Hold onto your socks:

Next is one of the finest examples of early aluminum mountain slayer technology to still exist. "Why are there so few?", you ask. Because they were made of aluminum you doofus. Forged from the finest scrap that Boeing left in their dumpster, MSR came up with one of the earliest superlight alu axes. This in no normal ultralight axe though! this is the super-high velocity armour piercing variety. Check it out. The tip of the pick and the spike have a steel core! (might be kryptonite, I'm not sure) It's like a concealed weapon! That alpine ice runnel might be laughing you and your beer-can-axe off; until you split it stem to stern with your TOMAHAWK!!!
Only those with the skill and purity of heart to draw Excalibur from the stone should even think about going down this road. Are you worthy?

Let the bidding frenzy begin at $20 each!

#1; Hoh Man. This appeared in Alpinist #27. Prints only the original is in the Ydpl8s collection.
#2; Generic Crap Bivy. This is available as an original with a second 'toon, Bivy Excavation, on side B.
#3; What do you mean no more rope? Available as a single original.

#4; Sh#t and Pitch. Available as a two-fer with a side B 'toon called Butt Breath. pic posted later.

#5; Tuna Can. Available as a single original.

#6; Say What. Available as a two-fer original with Charmin Gully on the flip side.

#7; Another fine mess. Available as a two-fer original with Philbert's Dilema on the flip side.

#8; Philbert's dilema. Available as a two-fer original with Another Fine Mess on the flip side.

#9;Hueco Thanx. This appeared in Alpinist #39. Available as a single original.

#10; Cajun Style. Available as a single original.

#11; Indecent Exposure. This was the illustration for Matt Samat's story in Alpinist #31. Available as a single original.

#12; Sleep Tight. Available as a single original.

#13; Yin Yang aka Philbert's Dilema redux. This appeared in Alpinist #34. Available as a single original

Signed prints are being offered at $10 each and/or 3 for $25. Though the kidcormier graciously offered $25 for just one.

Originals should be auctioned for a fair amount more. I am thinking an opening bid of $75 for a single and $150 for doubles seems about right.

Ok. I thought I would bump some stuff I haven't seen bids on yet...

Auction on David's book "VORTEX" is now OPEN for bids.

Winner of the 1990 Boardman Tasker Award, original hardcover edition!

This book sounds excellent and Dave says he has a couple of copies so bid it up people!
No starting bid or auction end date as of yet.

Briham is doing bike tunes..

This just in has some moto x kicks for sale!!
Alpinestars Tech 8s Motocross boots, size 10. I wore them maybe four times. Starting bid is $120.00. I'll pay shipping and highest bid pays to Mike's paypal. Bidding ends, sh#t I don't know.

Nature has a deal on sushifest tickets!!
Send Mike $40 and you get a free night at a SushiFest of your choice....

I received one of Bruce's incredible prints (14/20) as a wedding gift 30 years ago and it always enjoys conspicuous and proud placement at the Chateau Beckham.
It's a remarkable piece that reveals one of bk's many hidden talents and runs completely contrary to his reputation for minimalist disarray and the well deserved moniker "Captain Chaos".
Truly a noble savage and renaissance man.

hey there say, big mike!

say, thinks are going very well, great to hear this... your gift and the the tiny one inside for sandra, is now on its way... my friend got it sent...

sorry it is a bit late, :))
and keep up the good work at walking, i just saw the pic, the other night,
and man oh man: you ARE tall, ;) (my dad is tall, too, 6 feet 2? inches?)

was soooo happy, to see sandra reply on the facebook to all this:
dreams come true, :)

well, say, now, as to the auction here:

since all is going so well here... and the egret had not gotten any bids, so won't be needed, i have this gut-feeling to send it to my mom...
for easter--happy spring thing, for her...
she is in her 80's and does not
get out onto the trail to SEE these anymore...
edit: far as i know her health is okay, but her knee is very
bad, :( and she has to take care, as to them older bones, too, :))

she has a soft spot in her heart for egrets and we have many precious sightings together, as to these... and, have a whole new crop to paint here
and will have no room to put these... (don't want them in the basement, though perhaps, i could set-up a special spot, later)...

so as of now, the egret is off to a new home...
WILL be flying out tonight...

thank you for understanding... :)
the heart offer is still here, if you need anything though, :)

There are a couple of items that have almost been finalized but have not quite been completed, tricouni's book is one and i just have to hook up with perry beckham to get that one done, philo's painting as well. Scrubbers axes i think are almost done but the auction doesn't end till he gets back from smith.

Also Jim Donini's fabulous offer is still open for bids until the start of april but it looks like elcapinyoass has that one all but sewn up with his 500 dollar bid.

There are several items which have yet to have any interest. Briham's bike tune offers, Jim b's touring boots, the fabulous carpet cleaning offer, neebee's beautiful deer painting.

Repost of my offer. Think it got buried. No takers yet :(

I run my own carpet cleaning business. My standard prices are $45 two room minimum. $119 for 1200 square feet and 10Cents/sf beyond that.

I will go half that price for anyone who wishes to help Big Mike. (upto $100 total for a single job (ie 2000 SF)) All proceeds will go to Big Mike Via US Postal International Money Order. I will photo the money order and envelope and email that to you as receipt.

Mike has sent me the address to send checks to and will confirm when he gets them.

Areas of Service are Reno, Tahoe, Truckee, Carson, Fallon hell anywhere within 50 miles of Reno basically

PM me via ST and I will call. My phone will let me know within 10 minutes of an e-mail via PM.

I am not at all here to advertise my business On CMacs site. Thus I am not attaching my website. I am glad to donate my time and expenses to help a brother out. At half price it will hopefully be a great way to get those nagging carpet spots, traffic areas and procrastinating out of the way for a great price and cause.

Had lunch with Big Mike yesterday, what a great guy !

I have an unusual item to offer for auction.

One First Ascent of a new route in Skaha. Scrubbed, bolted and ready to go. I had removed the first three hangers and intended to send it when the weather improved.

I’ve spent approximately $ 75.00 - $100.00 in hard costs to equip the route.

Eight bolts long; Climb a short face to a discontinuous hand crack, through jugs over a roof, face climbing to a flaring off hands finish. Probably around 5.11A.

A chance to be forever immortalize in a guide book!

Harry, don't forget, over-promoting.

I already got crap from the parks supervisor for posting an ad on the bulletin board. “ I understand the desire to help out a fellow climber who has been injured, commercial use of a park (such as the sale of a first ascent) is prohibited without a park use permit.”

Luckily the climb is outside the park at Shady Lane. http://www.skaha.org/documents/Shady_Lane_Mar23_2013.pdf

Philo. Hope you are doing ok buddy!

Cracko got the climb with Jim. Ryand just purchased neebees deer painting, plumbbob got tami's awesome avapoodle painting. I have to update the list. I'll get it done this weekend. Been busy working my butt off! I have the ride covered tonight Kid, but thanks.

Stoked Ais wants that print. I really like it too.

Good luck with your recovery...

Mail service between US and Canada can be painful. Last year I sent my US taxes to the IRS from Vancouver and it took 10 weeks to get to Texas. Good thing I did not owe any cash. I now drive across the border if I need to send anything via snail mail.

Hey Big Mike. Your call on Bruce's offer for the climb in Skaha or I close the bidding with Anna's offer of $250.00.
Some how I missed the Pay pal info if you chose the cash offer.

Anna sent me money today! Thanks Anna! I'm so psyched to get back out there and train up to send this route! I already have a name in mind to pay homage to both gift givers!!

Whoa Bruce I'd take two cases of beer and leave the first born with the (apparently knott to responsible )parents to deal with that mud slide.....
Beautiful work of the canyon painting with the atmospheric perspective( done with loving hands from the painter) there....

Hey Big Mike....positive unintended consequence of your injury...I met a great bike mechanic who tuned up my hiking partner, errr, I mean trail riding buddy...
Brian Hamilton or ST, briham89, did a fantastic job!
He's located in SJ and I would HIGHLY recommend!

Before my tune up...

After my tuneup
HA HA HA HA HA. In my lil' ole lady dreams!

Big Mike, check your email

Haha Susan, I totally did a double take on that second photo. Fooled me for a second. Thanks for the kind words, and I'm glad you are enjoying your bike!

I hope you are doing well Mike. Hopefully we'll meet in Squamish sometime this year.

Pretty stoked, just received a wonderful neebee original in the mail as well as a little bonus piece! It's beautiful! Thanks Neebee & all who donated auction items or funds here for Mike, special thanks to Johntp for his extremely selfless generosity. Hopefully we'll see some of u up here one day to repay the hospitalities.

hey there say, ryan D... wow, so happy you finally got them!!!

i hope you can find suitable frames, if needed... i always tell folks to
go to the thrift stores, you can find neat frames by taking out old faded art in them... *that is why they sell cheap... :)

:)

take care with the non-oil, the two deer, that you don't get it wet...

:) just slightly dust it with feather duster, i reckon, :))

it is 'spayed over' but still, always nice to take care... :)

ps:
big mike is doing so well, saw his share on facebooke, :)
