Where is Anders?
One of ST's most prolific posters has disappeared. Erased two weeks worth of posts, and... And what? Kidnapped by aliens? Changed his name and eloped to the Cayman Islands?
If I recall, he said something in the "Lolli's gone" thread indicating that he might just pack up and go, too. But he's erased that post along with everything else since the 14th of January.
Maybe some of the Vancouver/Squamish crowd could check and make sure he's okay? Maybe he's just taking a break from the ST madhouse, but...
Mighty Hiker is a really great guy, super smart and helpful. I can't say that about most people so yeah, I miss him and I hope where ever he is it's a wonderful place plus... I hope he will be back soon.
Anders is great. At Face Lift I love working with him because he always has a oops! four letter word, plan. But we all need to change routine or life changes it for us. Whatever the case, we love yo Anders.
Just gotta say some of the funniest comments I've read in a while are right here on this thread. LOL.... and LOL is not just good it's GREAT for the soul.
(Hope that last statement isn't politically incorrect or anything....yu know mentioning the word "soul" and all. Hope I don't get banned. :DDD lynnie
Anders wrote me recently with a killer bakery recommendation in Vancouver so he hasn't fallen off the map.
He did delete a perfectly benign post or the Origin of Belay Devices thread which has had me wondering.
The ST party ebbs and flows so I hope that he will grace us with his presence again very soon. Losing good folks to the rant and rabble makes me a bit sad when I try my best to keep them engaged historically.
Well, sheeit, Dingus nailed me good. I grew up in a trailer park. The drivel there... ranged though. I could tell you a story or twenty. Ha. Dunno about Anders, seems we are all upset over something or other. Winter probably.
If Mr Milktoast is right, then I guess this is better than having a gun control debate thread or two on the first page - the objection to which, if I remember correctly, was the whole idea behind starting the grab-ass thread.
Anders is usually the first to bump most of the threads that I post so he is very engaged with this forum. I wonder what has his attention at the moment?
I communicate via email with Anders at times. I hope his absence is more of a R&R or something so innocuous and nothing worse. But I won't email him because if he needs his space for whatever reason, he's got it, at least from me.
I think he's lurking a bit. I got an email a few days ago from him. I actually hadn't noticed that he quit posting.
People have lives and get sick of the intard-net ya know? ... and is it just me or do people loose their marbles and start tearing each other to pieces on this site every single winter? I bet a lot of folks find something better to do until the cabin fever-tide turns.
As with many others, Anders helped me when I first encountered ST. I would never have figured out how to post my photos from Photobucket without Ander's detailed instructions. He did some wonderful things for Hope and I at the Sacherer memorial also. I'm hoping along with everyone else that he comes back soon.
He's on a STabatical ok. If ya wana find him look for graffiti strewn rocks and signs along the trail or where they are breaking ground for the new gondola.
Someone who has posted on this very thread apparently thought so, because they could have deleted the offending thread at the time of their choosing, but chose to let it fester.
But apparently it was more important to that person to let that thread run its disruptive course, allowing more crap to be piled onto it, than it was to keep someone cool like Anders around.

Hahahahahaha
Yes, of course they did

I don't smoke that stuff. You are wrong as always. And my comment was historically accurate.
Disprove the comment and quit trying to re-direct the discussion in a personal way.
So why don't you -- jhedge and donald thompson -- get a room somewhere and work it out in private.
Why can't you self-centered losers take your endless stupid argument somewhere else. Somewhere where you won't piss off everybody else with your childish need to score points off someone who is as much of an as#@&%e as you are.
Can't decide which is funnier - your butchered syntax, or your attempt at 17th-century time travel
I can't decide which is more pathetic :your delusional pseudo-intellectualism, or your non-stop Bond villain persona and ad hominem attacks. I suppose these psychologically -driven traits are your best stab at high intellect.
Time for you to characterize your opponent as a child of some sort which you fantasize as coming to you to be 'humiliated'.
17th-century time travel
Is that when you think the Middle Ages occurred ?

Yes,yes of course you are right.

"Proving a negative is an extremely tough thing to do, and requires extraordinary evidince."
That's soooo true. I can't for the life of me understand how you guys believe that Shrub's jackbooted approach to 9/11 stopped any further attacks. That negative can't be proven, yet you guys buy it hook, line & sinker.
I think what ghost meant to say was; "If you could take your off topic conversation elsewhere and delete those posts it would be much appreciated."
No, Mike, what I meant to say was that jhedge and Donald Thompson are a pair of selfish as#@&%es who have absolutely no regard for anyone other than themselves. You could start a thread about the death of your wife, and the two of them would soon be all over it screaming about which of them was the bigger loser.
Craig Fry (Dr. F) started a thread in which people like that could vent their inadequacies. It might not be a fun place for most of us to visit, but in theory it serves the useful purpose of allowing people like jhedge and Donald Thompson to post on Supertopo without screwing things up for others.
I know you're trying to pour a little oil on troubled waters here, but the time for that is over. Be nice, and they'll just march in and sh#t in your punchbowl. The time has come to tell people like that to take their bullshit outside.
What, you mean "The landed aristocracy in medieval Europe would often relish in discussions about the relative 'governability ' of vassals , serfs, and the lowest peasantry" is off-topic?
I can't imagine how anyone could think that was OT
Oh wait...we were talking about drug-induced time travel, right?
I've got to say the most f bombs in a row that I ever heard in my life happened at a motel outside Castlegar in BC, where I had to spend the night on the way to my sister's place. My room was unfortunately near a bar frequented by bikers who reved their motors and shouted out creative ways of effing each other until 4 am. This was after my sister had assured me on the phone that Canadians were much kinder and gentler than Americans. The only difference I could tell was that mercifully, they didn't have guns.
Since folks seem to bemoan the lack of climbing content around here, I would politely point out that on balance, ANDERS >>>>>>>infinity>>>>>>> the offensive photo thread.
That some of you are behaving worse than kids on a playground, ganging up and piling on whichever individual you've chosen on any particular day makes me wish I'd posted the stories about my birth parents elsewhere.
But here I am. Y'all are stuck with me.
And since you asked...
Anders is one of the most knowledgeable, kindest, funniest, generous and downright decent people I've had the pleasure of meeting. He is unobtrusive, but you'd better believe that he misses nothing and appears when he's needed.
And we do need him here. This forum is a much less soulful, humorous, touching and awesome place without Anders, and the many other folks that have been run off in the short, roughly 10 months since I joined your campfire.
Can no one see the opportunity being wasted here??? How often are you given the chance to stand on even ground with historical personalities, your heroes, past, present and future? Why are people driving them away in DROVES?!
Sigh. I can't believe I got trolled into a rant.
But I WILL sand up for folks I'd be proud to call friends.
Edit:
Bruce, that rant is hilarious and awesome. :D
lila beine - Thank you for your rant. It was both timely and appropriately critical while being both bombastic and humble in tone enough to identify yourself as firmly human. We salute you. I'm confident that anders hasn't left us forever like some petulent gun nut retreating to his doomsday bunker for one of his most endearing traits is his remarkably thick skin and (as you have pointed out) a fine sense of humor and humility. You throw all that together and you'll survive anything - yes, even dare I say an out of control Stupor Torpor flame thread..... Er, I mean appreciation thread.
There is nothing wrong with a good spontaneous rant. Here is one that I know Anders would appreciate more than anybody:
Oh how the net has become such a lovely venue of complete mindless bullshet. Sad that it has come to the taco. Appears MH has finally realized such and no longer wishes to partake. Good on him. Great example actually.
I for one am grateful that you are here Lila and appreciate your insights. Everything you said about Anders is totally true. I refuse to speculate. I'm sure he'll come back when it suits him.
I stopped posting for about 6 months one time.. not intentionally. At some point a lengthy Facebook discussion occurred with lots of people posting the "reasons" why I "left the site". Absolutely none of the "facts" were true BTW. People were making up drama that didn't even exist. I just had a life and was busy living it and the Taco is not the center of my friggin universe.
That being said... Sheesh.. what the hell is wrong with some of you people? Seriously.. you need to step away from the computers. Go outside. Get laid. Smoke a bowl, go climbing, spend some time with family and friends, whatever floats your boat. Hanging around a website just being jerks is a waste of time.
Here we have a lovely display of the interactive cesspool that sent Anders off on the trail with nose and ear plugs.
Why would any sensible person want to be here to slurp this up?
Steve - wouldn't you agree that that cess pool is nothing more than a cross section of the human condition? If you reject humanity - warts and all - where do you go? I'm sure you would agree that ST is pretty benign and remarkably civil compared to even some Thanksgiving diners let alone the average interflame forum.
It good to storm off every now and then. Nine times out of ten it just lets the dust settle enough to say "Well some of it is crap no doubt but ......"
To all of you who have chimed in since my rant, I offer my thanks.
I started this thread because I was worried about a friend. Several of Anders' other friends voiced their concern, as did a few people who, if they weren't old friends, had come to know and like Anders through this forum.
To have our concern defecated on by a couple of people who, obviously, couldn't care less about Anders or our feelings, set me off.
I've been posting here for years, and for many more years before that on rec.climbing, and I don't think I've ever gone over the edge like that. But Anders is not the only friend who has been pushed away by the kind of thoughtless behavior that was on display here, and when it happened...
Anyway, I'm thankful that so many of you have both shared your concern for our friend, and your disgust at those who saw that concern as just another platform for their selfishness.
Maybe there's hope. Maybe Anders (and a couple of others) will come back when he sees that there are people here who genuinely miss him. And maybe the people who barged in will see that they should keep their childish quarrels to threads expressly for that purpose.
We just need the good folks to take over and for some of us in the gray like myself to follow their lead. Sadly we might need a monitor, a big brother/parent figure to help us keep this place a little bit nicer. Maybe we need a ST facelift of sort.
AFS
I did get a very short FB message from Anders, but it was not concerning his leave of absence. So - at least it is pretty sure he has not fallen into a crevasse and can't get a cel signal to dial 911.
Anders is a great person -so helpful with Facelift, which is where I have encountered him. He is out there in the real world doing things with good people.
I think ghost, Big Mike and some others articulated the point as well as it will ever get. I think hedge and DT might like to recognize it . Anyway, anybody figure out whats up with Anders? Greg?
I came to this forum right around the same time Anders did. It was right around the time of Daryl's Memorial on top of the Chief. I made a connection with Anders and a bunch of other Canadians that post here and since that time I have become friends with several of these good people. What really gets me is why these two (expletive deleted)'s would discolor these calm waters. The civility shown amongst our northern neighbors is a model we could all do well to emulate.
It is stuff like this that makes me realize we really have a long way to go in this country to come to a consensus of meaningful change.
I also get the feeling that Anders has started some kind of social experiment with "we the Taco" as subjects. I am laughing already.
Mighty Hiker posts mainly on the Republicans are wrong thread,
and maybe since everyone gang piled on the thread as being so Baddd, the thread has had a lot less interesting conversations going on,
which equals alot less fun on ST in general,
Funny thing, we have about 50% Canadians posting on that thread, they know more about the Republicans than most Americans.
So much PC BS going on these dayz, the fun has escaped.
"Just like many that he enters,, they turn to shyte. a 100% negative lil prick he is- i even deletd a climbing thread due to his same vomit."
If i were moderating, hed be history."
Hahahaha, yes I'm sure you would, Rong.
And if people who couldn't back up their opinions with stats, data and sourced, attributed journalism were subject to being banned, you'd be gone.
As already stated, this is a community moderated forum, not someplace where wingnut gibberish goes unchallenged - as Anders himself has proven repeatedly when he, like the rest of us, calls you out.
I'll keep it to the political threads if others do as well. I was curious what had happened to Anders, clicked on the thread, and what do I get? Some moron posting wingnut gibberish about the Middle Ages. And I just did a little self-moderating.
Steve - wouldn't you agree that that cess pool is nothing more than a cross section of the human condition? If you reject humanity - warts and all - where do you go?
I choose to avoid well over 99.99% of humanity. I filtered their asses out.
I bet you do too.
DMT
ps. the purpose of government, in part, is to defend from threats BOTH foreign AND domestic. Think of the whackamole like an Israeli airstrike - provoked, surgical and highly effective. But it never wins the war. It just takes out another as#@&%e.
I'll keep it to the political threads if others do as well.
Thank you. That is much appreciated. I don't have any problem with what goes on in those threads. I've even posted in them myself. But what is welcome in the political threads can really ruin things in other threads.
Since I am the one in the original dust- up I'd like to explain a few things.
First of all, I have always liked Mighty Hiker, so I was drawn to the thread. He and I have differing opinions and yet I consider him a decent person, a worthy debater, and a highly intelligent individual.
If someone else had been the subject of such a thread I most likely would not have posted.
I saw a comment someone posted that had nothing to do with the subject at hand ,namely,
Mighty Hiker's possible disposition.
I impulsively responded to the comment. It had to do with an innocuous historical matter. The type Mighty Hiker and I might have debated on.
I was then personally attacked by an individual who suddenly appeared. He attacked me in a characteristic manner that was thoroughly ad hominem.
No matter where I happen to be - even on a puppy thread- I will defend myself if personally attacked in such a way.
Sorry it had to be on this threads - dedicated to a cherished friend of others. But I will always defend myself. Sorry, that's how I'm wired.
The OP of this thread made matters worse by insults of his own at the time. Had he just maintained his cool and politely asked me to leave I would have instantly left- which I did anyway, despite the needless and overwrought insults.
But that's cool. I know people were worried about MH.
Anders was lurking on FB last night, and I couldn't resist teasing him a bit about how his absence here set off its own thread. If Helen of Troy had the face that launched a thousand ships, does Anders have a certain gravitas whose absence that will launch a thousand posts?
"Sadly we might need a monitor, a big brother/parent figure to help us keep this place a little bit nicer."
Remember the words of Captain Granitic? ( on soloing ):
"In abscence of protection, you must be your own"
The vacumn left by the lack of a monitor should be filled by two things climbers are supposed to possess in copious quantities: Good Judgement and Self Control.
The vacuum left by the lack of a monitor should be filled by two things climbers are supposed to possess in copious quantities: Good Judgement and Self Control.
But Chaz, we all know that good judgment comes from experience, and experience comes from . . .
Good news. Anders has reported in alive and unharmed. He had some lame ass excuse for his tardiness but you can take it up with him at the next face lift or Jihadists of the Chief meeting.
I bet you thought Anders was a lawyer right? Ha ha. He's a crafty one. Actually he's a barber. Thats right - a long career cutting hair but thats not what he wanted. He really wanted to be either a lumberjack or a supreme court judge but his cruel father forced him into the army and they made him cut hair.
I just discovered the "Gondola on the chief" thread ha been nuked.
Oh well. I thought anders would like this:
Environmental group files court challenge of resort company's use of B.C. park

VANCOUVER — The B.C. government is facing legal action from an environmental group that claims the province doesn't have the right to give exclusive use of a public park to a specific group.
Friends of Strathcona Park is arguing in B.C. Supreme Court that the Environment Ministry should not have issued a park-use permit to Clayoquot Wilderness Resort in 2011.
She said that allowed the company to bring guided horse trips into a secluded area of the huge park on Vancouver Island.
Scott Bernstein, the group's lawyer, says granting rights to a single business, and what he calls its high-end clients, is not in the public interest.
The group's spokeswoman Bridget Horel says allowing a private company the exclusive right to bring horses into a wilderness area diminishes the park for everyone else.
She says the case is about ensuring the Environment Ministry protects parks for the good of the general public.
There is still over 24 thousand posts by MH you can still read.
He may be gone for a time, but he's still thought of.
I will always consider him a friend.
Some people have careers that could be adversely affected by being associated with blasphemous and pornographic posts, not to mention general vitriole.
so........ what do you guys think of a private corporation operating a commercial horse riding operation in Strathcona / Clayoquot? Friends of Strathcona Park were the original political action group formed to oppose an open pit mine being carved out of Strathcona Park back in the seventies. This thing isn't quite an open pit mine but I'm sure Anders would think its the thin edge of the wedge.
... did Parks follow a transparent public process as required in its operating procedures, or did it avoid the exposure of the process by administrative tactics that gave preference to the horse packers?
Mighty Hiker asked me to post this on his behalf, I'm a bit hurried tonight and way tired, so I have only skinned it.
“Some noticed that I am no longer posting on SuperTopo, and indeed about ten days ago I removed my relatively few recent posts, and asked that my account be deactivated. I have been posting less over the last few months, losing interest, and decided it was time to move on. To everything its season, and family, work, exercise, working on the Squamish history project and other things (maybe even climbing) must take priority, probably for some time. One distraction less will help. I’ll stay in touch with friends, perhaps lurk a bit, and of course be at the FaceLift, and perhaps similar events. Here are a few farewell remarks.
The furore over “boobgate” was perhaps a last straw, but not the cause. It’s hardly the first such train wreck on ST. It vividly illustrated the peril of a forum with little moderation, in that it was almost wholly inappropriate – apart from the blue-footed booby, that is. I don’t blame t*r for doing what she did, particularly as I believe she first posted to ask people to stop, and may also have sent a message to management. Perhaps the “nukes” were a bit juvenile, and two wrongs usually don’t make a right, but the thread itself was the problem – and it quickly got out of hand. The reaction of some to what t*r did, and things that were said about her, did little credit to those who said them, and ST. Shooting the messenger is usually counterproductive.
I’ve only corresponded by e-mail with t*r. However, it sounds like she’s surmounted significant challenges, is finding her feet in the adult world, and has ideals and passions. Not just climbing. Whatever real or imaginary whines they may have about her, I suspect that many of the grumpy old farts here envy her – and ST could do with more people like t*r. They’re part of the future of climbing, so let’s try to be graceful about it, eh?
Whatever the rights and wrongs of it, it’s pretty simple. Don’t post anything to ST that you wouldn’t say in person to whoever you’re addressing, or want the world to know about. It doesn’t have to be climbers talking about climbing – there are lots of other things that climbers can intelligently discuss, and well-behaved non-climbers too. And for those who insist on acting out, stay to your own threads. You can believe all you want in whatever you want – religion, politics, conspiracy theories, gun nuttery, hates for each other, and on and on – but keep it to yourselves, and to those threads. In connection with which I suggested to CMac that once a day they simply delete all threads that aren’t a) climbing-related, or b) civil discussions, preferably amongst climbers, about non-climbing matters, or c) a few clearly-identified threads (sandboxes) for the ranters to play in. Pour encourager les autres, as some general put it.
I deleted the first post on the “Climbing at Squamish in the 1970s” thread. It had served its purpose, hadn’t had much added to it for several years, and probably wasn’t often being looked at. Worse, I think I bungled with PhotoBucket, and my photos there, which were a good part of the thread (and in others) are gone. It had been several years since I looked at my PB account, ever since ST started allowing direct posting of photos. I don’t know what happened – maybe I missed an account renewal notice, or did something accidental, or just electronic gremlins. There didn’t seem much point to keeping the thread after that – although I have a pdf version of it from a while back for reference (only 25 MB).
I also deleted the first post of the Squamish Gondola thread. It also had served its purpose, as it appears that the promoters will have their way, after a badly flawed process. And I know an inside job when I see one. The question as to how the promoters acquired the land from The Land Conservancy, without the agreed-on and effective restrictive covenant, still remains very open. There’s no question that the government’s own policy wasn’t complied with – the Elders Council for Parks in B.C., an independent body which includes experienced retired civil servants (including those who wrote and applied the policy), put considerable effort into reviewing what had happened, and concluded that the policy clearly hadn’t been complied with. Well, although it’s an iconic provincial park, it’s now going to be gutted for local, private gain. The gondola supporters have made their bed, and now will have to lie in it. Assuming, that is, that they found some sucker to pay for it. Still, most puzzling of all is that two climbers spoke publicly in favour of the proposal (one even on ST) – without disclosing that they were contractors for the developers. I’ll never understand that.
(Both threads, of course, could still be found in truncated form.)
Anders account is still active, he wasn't deactivated. Hopefully he'll pop back in with some great climbing content on occasion. Take care Anders, thanks for the other 24116 posts you left as a legacy. Speaking for myself, I appreciated your company and thank you for the many positive contributions you made.
Mighty Hiker basically confirmed that he was one of many people who received an email from "t*r" imploring them to sabotage the forum ("because they can't ban us all"). I'd bet a large sum of money DMT received one as well. In case anyone missed it, Mighty Hiker posted a huge string of photos (banner ads) shortly before the thread disappeared. One other user (who shall remain nameless to prevent further embarrassment) also posted the same images as "t*r" had earlier (evidently having received the links from "t*r"), but it was a rather feeble attempt as she didn't copy/paste dozens of lines as "t*r" had. Oops! "Epic fail" as they say...
It's a histrionic masterpiece!!!!!
lol
Indeed, this whole drama-queen saga with the hacking conspiracy twist is one of the all-time best.
So what was all that fuss about with the Gondola anyway? All I recall is I'm still owed 3 Freinds of the Chief buttons according to my invoice book.
Todd, I have no idea whats going on up at Strathcona park with those horses. I have yet to see anything wrong in the Gondola process other than some unsupported wild guesses out of left field. There is a big red flag in regard to the nonsensical Heliski draft recommendation but no hard evidence of malfeasance... just a huge amount of completely unexplained circumstantial evidence.
If there is impropriety in the processes we will need a whistle blower from within BC Parks to root it out. What ever happened to Anders petitioning with the Ombudsman to get to the bottom of it all? I recall a number of claims of his of pending revelations of impropriety but it all seems to have amounted to nothing and I can hardly even recall the details of his assertions at this point - and now there is no record.
The most important thing right now is to boot out the current BC Liberals as their hard core free enterprize / eviscerate government resource regulation mandate stinks like hell. Considering their record of avoiding scrutiny of their various highly suspect business deals and concerted de-regulation it is logical to assume they manipulate the BC Parks process if they chose. Maybe with a change of government we'll get some explanations from BC Parks, who is populated mostly by good people but seriously underfunded, demoralized and under threat of retribution.
I thought the Gondola thread was a good sounding board for these sort of local land management issues so too bad its gone. I could start another I suppose but I doubt it would have the same longevity without the lively debate and focused interest that the gondola thread generated.
Hey man I have no beef with you, we go way back in cyber-land. I just thought it odd that she would implore a bunch of people to sabotage the forum and knott you, but if you say she didn't I'll leave it at that.
I've made no secret of my distain for the (now 30-something) adult-child over the years, based on her histrionics and antagonistic trolling on this forum, and am frankly perplexed as to why she always got a pass from so many of you, seemingly blissfully ignorant of her antisocial behavior. I mean, why knott stick up for Rajmit?
That said, I don't hold grudges generally, and I actually posted something very nice about her recently.
She put up some big jpegs and wanted to bomb the thread not the site.
All the cry babies then cried to mama (Chris Mac), because they're little cry babies over a stupid worthless thread that can be found in a billion places on the internet (boobs).
Thus certain people here are stupid babies in adult packages.
I'm feeling all butthurt because things aren't going my way so I hate all of you and I hate supertopo and I hate what this thread has become. I'm going to whine in public for a while then quit posting and then nuke this thread, and then start deleting my old posts. Especially ones that started threads people liked and worked hard to contribute to.
But don't worry, I'll then send a long rambling letter about it to Dingus and he can post it for me, because even though supertopo isn't worth my consideration and my time is too important to waste by posting here, I still need to post here, to make sure you all know that I don't need to post here anymore.
That said, I don't hold grudges generally, and I actually posted something very nice about her recently.
Yes you have and I noticed it and appreciated the effort. You didn't have to do it. Thank you.
And thank you for accepting my word. Understand - I am one of the offenders on this site. I LIKE images of women, scantily clad, fashion avenue, nekkid, in my face, subtle, fun, lovely, especially with umbrellas hahahaha.
So I rescind my offer of a bet. Its not provable in any sense. But I think t*r would tell you too... she did not attempt to recruit me to bomb the thread.
Can anyone give a rational explanation of why you guys care so much?
I see that this is not about a boobs thread, but an outlet to focus your ugly, depressed, mental state of mind. There is nothing wrong with that, in fact its healthy....but it might work a little more efficiently to call it what it is.
No one could possibly care so much about posting boobs either way....I just dont buy it.
Even the resident guru is all caught up in this over dramatic nonsense.
Farewell for a while, Anders. It was such a pleasure getting to know you - a fine human being - through your posts here. Perhaps I'll see you at some future Facelift.
Phyl
Here's a question. On something like the Squamish thread, since individual posters own their material, what's to prevent someone starting a new Squamish thread and everyone unhappy with the deletion, just copying and pasting their contributions to the new thread?
Or maybe when someone deletes a thread, they've given up their right to it and the whole thing can be copied and pasted to a new thread?
